I Can’t Wait For This To Happen

  1. Very, very old story from Econ 301

Shylock is the town jeweler.  He has the only safe in town.  People start leaving gold and valuables with him, for which he gives them a receipt.

Pretty soon, receipts start trading between the townfolk.--after all, why go to the trouble of retrieving the gold from Shylock’s safe—just give the receipt.

Shylock notices that his receipts trade like cash.  So, for the first time, he writes a receipt for something NOT in his safe.

    When he does this:

    1. He becomes a crook.  but more importantly,

    2.  HE BECOMES A BANKER

  2. Credit Unions have always been the small man’s “bank.” (Actually, that’s a four-letter word to CU members) I’m a member of two credit unions and ex-member of one CU board and several other CUs.  The fees are low, interest rates competitive and service is good.  I will probably never put my money into a bank, unless it’s a small-town, independent financial organization.  The mega-banks just don’t care about people.  If Wal-Mart enters the banking industry, I say God bless them.....It should keep the bankers off of the backs of credit unions.

  3. Am I hallucinating (or is OCM)?  A Wacko Leftist Degenerate who likes WalMart?

Wow.  I also appreciate the benefits of everyone in the county who shopped there having an extra $25 per week in their pocket.

  4. I hate big corporate banks. I worked for a company that moved me out of state. When I went back to HQ for whatever reason I couldn’t cash checks in the bank they were drawn on because I didn’t have an account with them. I opened an account to satisfy this requirement. Problem solved? Nope, not quite. They started nibbling away at it with service charges and because there was no activity in the account they didn’t feel the need to send statements until they had eaten it all up. (Marine Midland)

A later employer gave me an expense check for a training trip I made. I went down to the bank branch it was drawn on and they charged me a fee for cashing it. (BankOne)

Thieving bastards, all of them. I’m very happy with the small bank I do business with now. If they get bought out by a big corporate bank I’ll just have to find another one. I’ll even try WalMart if they get into the business. Maybe. They can’t be worse than the giants.

  5. I’ll wait and see. I stopped doing busines with Sears because they decided to be the everything store and did it poorly. They wouldn’t take my Visa card because they had Discover. I had to pull the last of my cash out my pocket to pay for a car battery so I could go to work. Screw ‘em.

What I would really like to see is someone who will compete with Paypal so I can send money online.
