  1. Would their names be...Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Charley Rangel, etc.  They were probably there to make sure the kids didn’t learn anything about the Constitution or G*d forbid say a prayer in a public place?

  2. I’m sorry but they didn’t ‘remove’ the bats - they killed them.  Talk about asshats!

  3. Beermeanie, I missed the part of the article that said the bats were killed. Care to point it out to me? The exterminators probably used napthalene, the only chemical currently registered as a bat repellent for indoor use. Bats aren’t a big danger, though they can carry rabies. They can also be a big nuisance, as their droppings and urine accumulate in a confined area and cause odors and health problems. If my kid went to that school, I’d be glad the officials removed them.

  4. Ok, Rokky - I probably read more into it than I should have but the way the article reads - the smell is expected to be temporary.  This wouldn’t be the case with Napthalene flakes b/c it’s a repellent and would need to remain until bat excluders were put into place.  Nothing of excluders was mentioned and if they don’t put them in, the bats will come back.

It also said that the chemicals (pl) used weren’t harmful to adults or children.  Ok, either they used more than one chemical, and there are no other non-lethal chemicals approved for bats, or they have no idea that the odor from that much Napthalene would be a health hazard.

Yeah, I get a little excited sometimes but something about this article doesn’t sound right and it pissed me off!

  5. I hope the didn’t kill them because I really LIKE bats!
They did say EXTERMINATORS though-not RELOCATORS.

  6. I don’t know, like you say the article wasn’t clear about the fate of the bats. But I wonder how you would have felt if it were rats instead of bats. Even the most humane people I know wouldn’t have much to say about killing rats, though they have their place in the eco-system, too.

  7. Rokky, I’m not saying that the bats shouldn’t have been removed from the school.  They should have.  But in the proper way.

As for rats - well, I don’t have a problem with pet rats.  You can see ours here http://rats-rock.tripod.com/

The main difference between rats and bats is that bats don’t chew into food and piss in it, they don’t walk all over everything leaving a trail of droppings, they don’t come looking for you - you have to go looking for them, and they won’t bite unless you climb up into an attic and try to grab one!

So, I guess I wouldn’t have a problem with rat extermination.
