  1. Nice glass, Skipper. Really nice glass… would like one myself.

  2. My ‘running start’ gun is a 80 year old 8mm Mauser, skip.

Posted by Draven    United States   03/11/2007  at  10:11 AM

  3. Skipper! What weapon do you have that holo-sight on?

Posted by Macker    United States   03/11/2007  at  10:50 AM

  4. Macker, that’s the brand new CMMG AR-15 that I bought about two weeks ago. Don’t you remember?

Mauser, eh? Draven, that’s a great (RELIABLE) firearm. I’ve been considering adding one to my collection. I keep seeing the ads in American Rifleman and I keep getting tempted.

    LOL

  5. Do you have the adapter for the magazines to use the stripper clips?  If not, you better disassemble them now....

Those are good sights - as long as the battery lasts.  Plus you have to turn it on - which takes time. Or leave it on and trust the battery to be there when you need it.

One reason why I like the 1.5X5 type optics.  At 1.5 power it is virtually heads up.  At 5, it defines things well. And, it is always on smile

In any event - nice piece.

For nice Mausers look at Mauser.org

  6. Yes, I have a Clever Speed Loader that I use to load magazines. I like to have my .223 ammo on stripper clips. Old fashioned, I guess.

Batteries? I have two spare Lithium batteries, which are supposed to be good for 4,000 hours, plus the heads-up display has a battery indicator to let me know when it’s time to change them.

It’s really quick and simple to push one button and optics are instantly on. Plus, being as untrusting as I am, I also bought flip-up iron sights to mount behind the optics. You can’t see them in the picture because I haven’t figured out how to get them mounted. There’s a trick to it, I believe. It’s the A.R.M. 40L sights.

Actually, I just figured it out while pausing here. I had to pull the rail pin all the way out instead of just loosening it before sliding it on from the rear. AHA! It worked.

Low power optics are good too but I decided to go with the holographic red-dot just as an indulgence. Mauser.org looks good. Don’t tempt me any more. I’ve already blown nearly two grand this weekend on firearms stuff.

    LOL

  7. I have a massive case of gadget envy. You probably have a better TV than I have also.

Posted by Yellow Dog    United States   03/11/2007  at  01:15 PM

  8. MidwayUSA haas a pretty decent deal on Stoner USA made 30 rounders at 10 bucks @

Might want to stock up before these assbags take off on another Brady adventure.

  9. Gadget envy? Better TV?

Naw. All I have is this Panasonic TH-50PX60U 50” Diagonal Plasma HDTV with Built-In ATSC/QAM/NTSC Tuners and SD Memory Card Slot, Sony DTS/Dolby II Home Theater Sound System with 350 watt amplifier/receiver and 7.1 Infinity Surround Sound System. There’s also a Panasonic PVR (200GB HD recorder) and a Sony Blu-Ray DVD player in the stack there.

Picture is kinda washed out ‘cause I’ve got the windows open lettin’ the sunshine in ...

That’s Bruce Wayne on HD Channel 774. The only Batman movie worth a damn.

Living room air ionizer, full sunshine lamp and blue plastic flowers my ex-girlfriend threw in there. Oh, yeah, There’s my official Red Hat Linux red hat too.

I just realized I don’t have an Xbox 360 yet. Dang!

If you look closely at the picture you cn see a reflection of me holding a camera, taking a picture while wearing nothing but a t-shirt and my d**k hanging out.

  10. What, no pron of the Glock 30?  Come on skipper, give us some eye-candy to drool over

Posted by Sarge    United States   03/11/2007  at  03:42 PM

  11. I like that sight.  It would be nice if I could get one to adapt to my AK-47 as my eyes aren’t what they used to be either.

Posted by BobF    United States   03/11/2007  at  03:42 PM

  12. Hehehe. I’ll have yer gratuitous pics of the Glock in a few days. Ya see, the City of St. Louis just recently repealed the local gun ban laws but they stuck a little trickery in there when they did. If you live in St. Louis County and you purchase a handgun, you have to go to the closest police station, fill out a form and pay them $20. Then you wait five days while they run ANOTHER background check (gunshop already ran it and found me clean). They mail you a letter to make sure you actually live where you said you live and then you can take the letter back to the police station for a final signature that you can take to the gunshop and pick up your pistola (which they’re holding for you).

This only applies to handguns. You can buy rifles and shotguns all day long and walk out of the store with the goodies as long as you pass the BG check.

The rest of the state is rational but St. Louis County is ruled by Democrat, Liberal wing-nuts. Farkin’ gun-grabbers!

I sure do miss livin’ back home in Alabama where all you have to do is walk into your friendly local pawn shop and say, “HEY Leroy! Sell me that bazooka up there on the shelf and will you take this full-auto AK-47 on trade?” --- Thirty minutes later you’re blasting squirrels our of trees with an RPG. <sigh>

  13. I feel your pain, Skipper.  Little brother lives there and bemoans the process as well.  Makes for a good reason to not return on a permanent basis.

Posted by Sarge    United States   03/11/2007  at  04:55 PM

  14. I got my AR zeroed today, but it got too gusty to ger the optics zeroed too.

And fired some Mauser and Mosin.

My Mauser is a 24/47 made sometimes in 1925 as a 7mm mauser and rearsenaled to 8mm in 1947 or so, manufactured in the former Yugoslavia. Cost me $150.

Could be worse, you could have to pay $25 for a state background check and wait ten days for any firearm purchase.

  16. My TV is about the same amount of cool. My sound equipment is even more cool. I feel better now…

Posted by Yellow Dog    United States   03/11/2007  at  06:10 PM

  17. Not sure if I should second Yellow Dog. My tunes are mega sweet. It’s an audiophile thing, which makes no sense to anyone who isn’t an audio addict already. I am jonesing for one of them swanky flat TVs one of these days tho, but I want the price to go down to less than what my amps cost.

Oh, and Skipper, you can get a Mauser for a better price than what Mitchell’s is selling them for. Maybe not NIB and coated in Cosmoline, but they last forever anyway.

  18. Skipper I knew you had good taste. I have the same tv and the same Leupold! Though I plan to get one of the new VXL range this year if the wife will let me!

  19. The Mitchell Mausers are GORGEOUS, though. I’ve been thinking of an 8mm, but badly desire a 6.5 Swede first. As for your glass? I’ve got to get one of those now, damnit. See how you are?

Posted by cmblake6    United States   03/12/2007  at  10:36 AM

  20. The Mitchells tend to have better bores.  Since most of these were fired with corrosive primers, bore erosion is real consideration.

Posted by armadefoc    United States   03/12/2007  at  12:35 PM

  21. Most of the 24/47s were rearsenaled to 8mm (i.e., NEW barrel put on) and then dipped in cosmo and put away. The M48/M48As saw alot more service and yes, had ammo with corrosive primers used in them.

Posted by Draven    United States   03/12/2007  at  01:48 PM

  22. Regardless - they are good strong rifles.  I have a VZ-24 that I rebarreled to 22-250 that I love.  The lock time is a little slow, but it is a great action.

I guess the decent real M98s are pretty much gone now, aren’t they?

Posted by armadefoc    United States   03/12/2007  at  02:01 PM

  23. You mean Kar 98Ks?

There are a few Russian captures that showed up recently.

  24. FWIW, the various mauser forums don’t have a positive vibe re mitchell’s mausers.
I bought a 1940 K98 Mauser (russian capture, CAI import) couple months ago. Still in the box though, haven’t had the time to disassmble and clean, plus “glow-bull” warming has limited range time.
