  1. No reason to get rid of those dietary goodies.  Just eat less of them.  Keep it to once a week.  Depriving yourself of things you like to eat will make you ornery.

  2. I hear you Drew. I smoked like a mad man for 35 years and quit 9 years ago.  It never comes back all the way.  Glad to hear about the rest though.

  5. Glad that you have a diagnosis. With our wild land (now pure weeds from the monsoon season) - I’m amazed we haven’t seen ticks (especially with the deer, groundhogs, rabbits et al) out there. Most people and even our docs don’t understand how expensive it is - when all the co-pays, deductibles and ‘not covered’ are added up.  Go real (on the food)- I know from your posting recipes that you cook - but just thin out the herd of processed stuff (boxes and such). I quit smoking in 2003 - don’t miss it at all. Wheeze alot - but every time I go do a measurement (pre-op) - big surprise it’s ok. Everything in my chest moved around as my heart quadrupled in size attempting to keep me alive pre-surgery - which is where I think my wheeze came from. I’ve gone to butter, cream and yeah all that fattening stuff - but after the initial rise in numbers - back down to much lower levels - but admit - I eat less of most things. I don’t fry (usually only pan fry) much of anything anymore. And I’ve upped my fruits and veggies. Try cutting back on the sugar and carbs to help dropping weight. I use Xyltol now - as it is suppose to help prevent cavities (even our dentist is handing out gum with it) - if you chew after a meal. But still use regular sugar for baking. It’s about moderation - not cutting out - that never works. Much like all those ‘as seen on tv’ crap.

  6. Hey Rich, veggies are good. Well, when deep fried! grin

No, I get my greens in. But I get in too many complex carbs and meat fat too, and not enough exercise. The random window job isn’t 1% of the work of unloading trucks like I did when I was 17. So the sugar and white flour has to get severely reduced. Low gluten/slow carb/moderate fat is the way to go.

Guess I’ll become the master of lentil and chicken curries. I want taste in my food, so if I can’t have the fat I’ll take the spices.

W - I’ll look into Xyltol. Never heard of the stuff.

  9. I hate ticks. Glad that you caught it early Drew, hopefully the antibiotics will knock it on the head quickly. Hope you feel better soon.

  10. Yes, Mrs. Dash rocks. Great on everything, from toasted bread to salads to pot roast.

  11. You have extra lime in your blood? Whoo hoo! Drink lots of gin and tonic! You got the lime built in! Huh? What? Not L-I-M-E, you say? Oooooh L-Y-M-E! Ohh, that’s not good. Never mind....

  12. Very cute. AND I thought almost the exact same thing. Especially since we keep a 1.75L bottle of gin in the freezer here at all times ... just in case.

Gin fans - if you’re NOT a Tanq drinker, then try this New Amsterdam stuff. Pretty good, somewhere between Beefeater and Bombay regular, and it’s CHEAP. Excellent gin for strong G&Ts or real martinis. Kind of bland for straight sipping though.
