  2. True Story: Had been out in the Gulf working for McDermott. Got relieved late due to an accident at the facility where I was stationed. Finally caught the late afternoon run into Morgan City via the S-76 that they lease from AirLog. Got there about 1700L and decided that, since I didn’t need to be in Venice until 0500 the next morning, I would contact some friends, go out and eat, and then drive down to spend the night at our offices down on the West Bank.

Finally got to N’Awlins just about 2330 and was headed into town on the West Bank Expressway.( For those not knowing .... I-10 from Baton Rouge comes in right at the airport and hangs onto the West Bank ..... US 90 comes in from the West also, but considerabley further South and it turns into the West Bank Expressway)To get to our offices there, one must exit on LA23 (that ends at Venice) and head south. At this corner (busy, as you can imagine even at midnight) is a Popeye’s. When you come off the expressway one must move over 3 lanes to get to turn right on LA23. I managed to get over in the turn lane, when I looked at the Popeye’s and saw 2 “entreprenuers” headed toward me . . . one hand filled with cash and the other with weapon. My doors already being locked, I crammed the faithful Rodeo into 4-high and jumped the curb and made the turn onto LA23. They ran past me and attempted to hijack the car behind me. That was the last I saw as I headed South as fast as I could. All this was pre-Katrina.

There are other stories about that place ...
