  1. ya think???

  2. Don’t bother with the PADI course. That only qualifies you to dive to a max of 100 feet. That thing is way too deep for amateur divers w/o special training and equipment. (yes, I’ve got my Open Water quals through PADI.)

  3. no kidding.  me too on the PADI, and all I can say is i assumed there was an inside joke here that i’m missing…

  4. I don’t see a joke either kjmerz. OTH Drew, you should take the PADI course. I think everyone should go scuba diving at least once in their life. Just not in Dean’s Blue Hole. Get qualified before you go and then find a local dive shop and sign up for a day of diving.

  5. No, no joke. I am not a strong swimmer, and I don’t know if I could get my head around even drawing a single breath from a scuba tank underwater, even in a swimming pool. I’ve done a little snorkeling and enjoyed swimming down a bit until my ears hurt. At that depth I can see perfectly without my glasses. It was wonderful.

We’re looking at going to this place for vacation, and the Blue Hole there just happens to be a feature. It is not the reason for going.

  6. Belize is on my list of “go to places” once I pay off a few old debts. Cheap enough too that you can charter a chopper to fly over the hole instead of floating into it (not a fan of swimming really). If you go,HAVE FUN but stay out of the jungle. It is a 3rd world question mark in some ways Still.

  7. I’m not a ‘strong’ swimmer either. I can do several miles, but it won’t be fast. I use side-stroke, breast-stroke, and back-stroke. I never did get the hang of the crawl. But go take the PADI course. It’s a useful skill. The instructors will creep up on you in the swimming pool and:

    a) pull your mask off. You have to put it back on and clear it.
    b) shut off your oxygen tank. This simulates running out of air. Now you have to practice buddy breathing.

Which brings me to the most important point of diving: NEVER DIVE ALONE!

  8. “Which brings me to the most important point of diving: NEVER DIVE ALONE!”

    Good advice, Christopher.

    Especially when “muff-diving”!

  9. I’ll second Christopher’s advice - never dive alone.

    Take obama with you…

Serioulsy, have a great trip. And if you have th etime before you go, take the PADI course. It’s worth the investment.

  10. My Bro did that in High School waay back in 69/70 something. Took his Certs in Puget Sound by Seattle. Kinda cool watching him and his bud drag a bunch of critters out of the deep.45 years later and I think he can still fit in the wetsuit. Me, I kinda hate the water after almost being drowned at the age of 4,by the same Bro.
    Happy Days.
