French pool bans ‘burkini’ swim …..

  1. I’m sorry, but this is one place where I am not entirely pm board. Yes, I think we can all agree that the Burkha is used as a tool of intimidation and control by the Patriarchal and sexist Islamist society to dominate women. But this seems to be going over the top.

    While it is crucial that the Muslim women break their shackles, the Burkha- or something like it- has been present since Pre-Muslim Arabia, and the question becomes how we act towards those who wear it of their own free accord. Are many coerced into doing so? Absolutely! But at best this is targeting the effects rather than the causes.

    It is crucial that the secular authorities finally take a tough line on the causes of it and force concessions for the better of security (ie “you better take that off so we can confirm your ID), but going overboard may do more harm than good.

    I hope the French know what they are doing.
