  1. Great research, Drew.........and VERY interesting! Also, thanks for the memories of making “grocery bag” book covers and gluing text books back together for the next class. I had almost forgotten about all the wonderful fun of being a school kid way back when! From the current selection of books available at my grandchildren’s school, I can truthfully say there is a tremendous vacuum of patriotic book choices in our public schools. What a pity.

  2. Yeah and you could buy a Daisy BB gun in the back of the Boys Life mag - I remember those days too.

Sad that now it seems the book flyers are filled with books ‘based’ on the latest movie or social agenda drivel (I have grandchildren).

I loved horse books - girls and horses were the thing back in the day.

  3. Oh, for a certain kind of girl, horses will always be the thing. It’s like the color pink; the attraction seems to be hard wired.

  4. That’s true re. ladies and horses.  They seem to be very adept and we read or see lots of em here.  We’re in horse country as Drew knows, and the vast majority of as in 99% of horses that clip-clop past us have women (young girls too) in the saddle. I have yet to see a young boy.  There is also a horse drawn carriage that passes and it’s the only one I see with a man in the drivers seat.  Sometimes but not often, we may see a two horse rig. There’s also a larger and fancy carriage that’s rented for marriages and we’ve seen it only once. Very pricey and uniformed driver etc., for a local church wedding.

Drew ... much thank for this post. Great stuff and I’ve spent an hour going through Popular
Mechanics.  Of course, that’s not enough time and so I guess later on I’ll have to go back again. Wow. Some surprises there huh?  Love those adverts too.  Especially the two for musical instruments. I wonder how many fell for that. Altho Conn once was a major player. I was surprised to see it with a Trumpet cos my memory associates it with Clarinet. Maybe not. It’s been so darn long I just can’t bring up the exact memory, but I think (?) my Clarinet was a Conn. ??

Books.  You had to past the covers and such? Gee. I guess things were different in Ct. schools or at least the one I went to way back before they invented sex. You bought books from the school?

    Another home run post friend!

  5. Whoops ... When I studied Trumpet, I owned a Bach, but I think the company was actually owned by Conn. I visited the factory once. Wait ... No. Selmer bought Bach and my Clarinet was a Selmer. Gets a bit muddled. Modern trumpets easier to play then the ones made in 20’s though. I once had a 1923 Trumpet played both Bb and converted to C. Heavy too. Kinda wish I still had that one, even if I can’t play anything anymore.
Memories.  That pop.mechs. mag. sure brought a few back.

  6. Pretty sure my trombone was by Conn. Or was it an Olds? Lifetimes ago. I think the folks paid $100 for it in 1968. Conn is still in business, and a top trombone now costs $2800.

  7. Definitely an Olds. And playing selections from the Mikado in 6th grade killed it for me. That’s all we did at “lessons”, was to play the stuff for the concert. And that utterly sucked, because trombones get about 9 notes in the whole piece. Bah da baaah bop. Page after page after page of rests. Then we did the concert, which went on for an hour and was the most fantastic music ever. And I had 9 notes in it. Screw that. And bugger them scene stealing fag trumpet boys as well who got to play every damn bar.

Who me, bitter? Bit him too!
