  1. "The old “pull the slide back and lock it open, look in the chamber, then drop the magazine” method used to empty a regular semi-automatic pistol will result in a loaded XR9-S.”

    Uh-huh.

    Uh-uh.

It would result in a loaded “regular semi-automatic pistol” too.

Ask any firearms instructor.  The single most common source of negligent discharges (ND’s) is improper clearing.  If they lock the slide back to check the chamber with the magazine present in the weapon, they will see an empty chamber all right. So far so good.  Then it goes sideways. The tendency is to then drop the slide (chambering a round), remove the magazine, point in a safe direction and pull the trigger. Resulting in a loud noise and red faces all around. “Surprise shot”,indeed. And the first words out of their mouth will be, “But, I checked the chamber! It was EMPTY! I swear!”

Step 1 in properly clearing ANY weapon is to REMOVE THE FEED SOURCE.
Step 2 is to thoroughly check the chamber by LOOK AND FEEL. Then “buddy check” the chamber.

  2. Oh, yeah. Almost forgot. Nice piece.  I’ll take one.

  3. Which is why I didn’t say “then release the slide” at that point. Because if clearing is done as you describe, you betcha, you’ve got a loaded round. It’s probably a wee bit better to drop the magazine first and then rack to check.

My point was that the Boberg racks out a new round as the gun opens, and that round is sitting in the back end of the slide, when it’s intuitive to look forward. There will be some training curve with this pistol for old time shooters.

OTOH, there is nothing wrong with rack, lock, drop, and then rack again for ANY auto pistol. One extra step, just to double check.

Personally, I just always try to shoot the guns dry first. Less chance of a surprise that way, but I go and check them anyway.

  4. Drop the mag first. ALWAYS! That way if anything happens, it only happens once. THEN you lock back the slide/bolt/que sera to inspect the chamber. Ammo source first and always. And especially with the feeding system on this jobbiedo!

20 years as a military firearms instructor DOES have its benefits as a training aid for safety.

  9. No blowback 9mm? What about the famous Jennings Nine? They essentially cheapened and upsized a Ruger Mk II.

Always liked that fixed barrel swaged into a pot-metal frame. Perfect throw-away gun - if it didn’t blow up in your face. My daughter’s then boyfriend had one - a roll pin in the trigger mechanism sheared. The barrel was loose in the frame, and he had run less than 50 rounds through it. Told him I couldn’t - wouldn’t fix it.

The animation on the Boberg website is unclear as to whether the claw that pulls the next round out of the magazine will retain the round with the magazine dropped. I would imagine it does not, but without the gun in my hands, racking twice seems a really good idea - with the magazine out, first!

  10. They have a couple forums at their site. Maybe they could answer this question there.
