If a standard step length is to be kept, then a minimum leg length for recruits must be put in place. Period. A fast hip X-ray to check, then you’re either in or you’re out. Done. Oh no, we’re not putting any minimum height requirements in, not at all. Be as short as you want, as long as your legs at at least 34” long.
I seem to recall that the Romans came up with that 27” marching pace, and they managed it just fine even though they weren’t tall.
The 30” British parade step does seem rather Minister Of Silly Walks. And it looks quite “little boy trying to keep up with dad” if some of the paraders aren’t leggy enough.
I’ve no doubt that these little women were marched to the point of breakage for their audacity in wanting to serve their nation in uniform. Considering the dogshit way the Brits have ALWAYS treated their enlisted ranks, such deliberate brutality towards female recruits is fully expected. Why they didn’t use WAVE/WASP/WAC standards from WWII is beyond me ... probably had to have INTEGRATED troops now, so they went with the male standards.
Makes me wonder how many pullups these lady recruits were required to do.
