  1. Love these old photos peiper. Seems to me that today’s photographers have lost the art of conveying a woman’s mystery. Maybe it’s just the B&W photography, which I still consider a higher art form than color photography.

Doris Eaton Travis: Is that her at age 14? Perilously close to kiddie porn. 106 years? Wow. Impressive.

  2. Close to kiddie porn? ??
Not even. I have no idea if that shot was done at the age of 14 or not, but I wouldn’t think of it as porn or anything even close.  And don’t forget the era that would have been shot in. Many girls were already married by 15, if they weren’t working downstairs in some great hall 18 hours a day.
Anyway ... I agree re. Black and White. The lighting too, blk & wht also dramatic and I don’t think you see that much drama in color.
Ever notice the habit those folks had of coloring blk and wht pix. I guess they liked the idea of color, but I always thought the original B&W could not be improved upon by the addition of color.  Gee, and no photo shop or pc enhanced tricks. Altho at some point they discovered dodging and burning to improve things. Like skin imperfections etc. I don’t know when that bit of magic was introduced. But I have always enjoyed the photos of the period. Even street scenes.
