  1. OK Skipper, here’s where I can step in to help.
Any Mac users who have not installed the latest updates, go here. If you have Software Update set to automatically scan and inform you of said updates and you install them, you’re good to go. Updates are provided for Tiger (10.4) and Panther (10.3).

  2. I love how simple my Mac is.  Macker stole my thunder, I was going to pass that along.  Good job Macker!

As for the change, what is the reason?  It seems like a bunch of retards in Washington have nothing better to do than mess with us.  I have an automatically updating alarm clock that will probably be useless in just a few days.  I am beginning to loathe Congress.

  3. Tzedit is a neat tool.
    Microsoft posted it in January.
It is a free download, and in my opinion should be shipped with the OS in future versions.
you can run a local install and config,or you can push it out to all networked clients.
You can also configure your networked PC’s to timesync to the Domain Server.
For the basic home user it does not matter whether the clock is accurate,
but if you are dealing with time sensitive info,eg:Digital Video Recordings,Alarm System Settings,Unix integration & Data Base Management,
The job gets a lot tougher.
    That’s just my job,
    2 Servers, 75 workstations,
Hopefully the time change will go as well as the Y2K.
    Nothing Bad Happened,
and Nothing Bad is going to happen this time.

  4. Hmm, being the curmudgeon that I am rasberry , I have M$ auto update turned off and have not installed SP2 on M$ XP Pro. Wonder where that puts me in this puddle of mud engineered by our (not so) bright bulbs in Congress?.

  5. Basic summary, most large systems support time zones.  The server itself is running UTC or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and the client connection calculates the offset for each timezone.  So if a database record is made by a user on pacific time another user on eastern time will see the correct translated timestamp.  These systems all auto-adjust for Daylight Savings Time.  Now those adjustments have to be adjusted on all the systems or all sorts of transactions will be off an hour which could really mess things up, depending on the system.

Yeah, at my company, there are about 1,000 IT people scrambling like mad to push out updates to thousands of servers and tens of thousands of workstations right now.  Every single platform such as Sun Solaris, AIX, Linux, MacOSX, and Windows needs patching.  Then all the Java environments of which there are many.  Then WebLogics which could be lumped into the Java updates.  Then all the vendor software needs updates.  Then all the shared calendars in Outlook/Exchange.  Then all the other client server apps that use timezones. All the fun of audits, change control, automated rollouts that crash hundreds of computers, etc.
