Bridge puns, train puns, and comments about “spanning history” are encouraged. George Washington never actually threw that silver dollar across the Delaware. Are you kidding? Do you know what a dollar was worth back then????

  1. Wow, you bring back memories. I grew up and lived for over 50 years in Bergen County, NJ.

Back in the good old days when I was single, owned a brand new 1972 VW (yellow) Beetle I use to get up real early on Saturday morning and head off to parts unknown. Especially in the fall (Late Sept. and Oct). I took quite a few trips up to New Paltz, NY State and took Rte-84 and wound up in Port Jervis, NJ. Then I meandered South down Rte-23 to Rte 46 and Home.

Other trips took me on Rte 287 to Rte-202 and Lambertville, NJ/New Hope, PA. New Hope was in its Hippie prime then and the shops were owned and run by local youngsters who made and sold Silver jewelry, incense and other incidental “objects” of those wild days.

Life was good in those early days of the 1970’s. The NYC crowd hadn’t yet discovered the Delaware River and the wonder rural vista.

Although I haven’t been back to those areas in 30+ years I suspect there are still some wonderful spots to be explored.

  2. Yes there are. We love it out here. It’s the garden corner of the Garden State. We don’t have the exurban crowding but we have plenty of infrastructure, there is almost no crime, and most of the people are decent. That’s about the best you can hope for in NJ. OTOH, the taxes here are the highest in the nation, or very very close to it.
