  1. I still think the reason that the big cities are blue is because of population.  That many people living in close quarters uses up too much oxygen.  These people are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.  Their minds are not functioning properly.  They turn blue from lack of oxygen.  If left unchecked for long periods of time the brain damage becomes almost irreversible.

  2. I thought it was East St. Louis that was where all the real trouble was? Sorry, I’m not from around there.

  3. Drew my first thought too. And I used to live in MO (Fulton, #1 child born in Columbia) Ah those were the days. Anyway now I guess I know why my daughter and ex are thinking of joining forces and moving a little further out (ST. Charles). I don’t like where she is living right now - but it one of those edge communities, not too long ago it was not a bad area.

Sort of like where we are living right now. It used to be ok - going downward I keep praying not too quickly. I just hope that we can get through this before it either costs us dearly or we can beat feet out of dodge. Just a few more years and we can cut and run.

And here I really thought for a nano-second that this was gonna be the last move we ever made! What was I thinking?!?

So the racist in me is asking - What is the whitest, upper middle class city/town in America? Any idea - oh yeah has to be northish (son can’t take summer heat) and anywhere not Boston or The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.

  4. Ok, second time today - must be the fact that I am so behind on everything and more is getting loaded on every second.

Skipper - not to worry Cincinnati is about to surpass all. Since good old John Cranly (Dem running for Senate)sold the city out (to the cost of even more tax hikes) to the mob after the shooting in 2001 - our crime/murder rates are riviling DC and St Louis. And they will keep raising the taxes as more and more tax payers move out of the city limits. And then the city will collapse (especially since Ford and Comair and AK Steel et al) are closing, failing and just not making all those corporate tax contributions.

  5. Hard to figure the Misery part of St Louis wins the prize, I guess the criminals are crossing the bridge and heading toward the Arch, it ‘s not a Mcdonalds! I have a son going to college about 4 hrs North in Rock Island, Il. , relatively quiet for a small metropolitan area, the drug money makes the most noise. in_jail

  7. (1) East St. Louis is ILL-ANNOYS and don’t count. Illinois is another world populated by Blue State Moonbats. East St. Louis is a bombed-out, cancerous, bullet-riddled blight on the face of the Earth. Trust me. Drive across the bridge to East St. Louis and you’d think you had just left a nice Western city and entered Beirut - during wartime. The city is a ruin.

The main problem with downtown St. Louis on THIS side of the river is drugs. During the day, it’s a quiet midwestern city but at night meth is all over the place and street gangs roam at will. Only an idiot goes downtown at night except to go to a ballgame and then it’s best to leave your car at home and take a cab.

    Sad.

  8. Wardmama, I know where that town is. All you need is money. Check your email inbox.

  9. But Skipper, crime is less in East St. Lois than in your St. Lois? Guess there’s nothing left to steal on the other end of the bridge?

  10. The survey is intereting, but seems to be missing a lot of cities that for some reason or other didn’t report. Near me in PA, there is no mention of Altoona or Johnstown, two small cities that have fallen on hard times economically, and whose crime rates are probably high, but not stratospheric.

I sympathize with the Skipper. I’m originally from Buffalo, which is ranked 340 on the list. I read a story a number of years ago about the cities that had lost the highest percentage of their peak population over the alst 30 years or so. I think St. Louis was #1. Buffalo was definitely up there. From a peak city population of nearly 600,000 in 1950 (15th largest US city), the city’s population is now well under 300,000 (66th largest US city). The metro population is over 1 million and fairly flat over the last few decades.

Amazingly, a couple of Buffalo suburbs are ranked pretty high on the survey: Amherst (#2) is an upper middle class suburb, and Cheektowaga (#36) is a middle class city. This contrast between Buffalo city and suburbs caused my brother to do a post on our blog about it. I’m surprised that there are no high ranking suburbs of St. Louis on the list.

  14. Hi,

First post here, long time reader.

Anyway, Cincinnati, my hometown is #18 on the list.  Same thing, I live in the western suburbs, Greentownship, and crime is almost none existent.  Same thing, heavily Republican.  As you drive through the western suburbs of Hamilton County, you see mostly Republican yard signs.

But as soon as you hit the city limits, you see Democrat signs and rundown houses.  Must be some correlation there : )

One ray of hope, the County Sheriff decide to help clean up the worst neighborhood, Over-the -Rhine, which was starting to rebuild itself until the riots of 2001 and the non-response, kiss the rioters butts approach by the city.  He sent sheriff deputies in, over the objections of the city and instituted zero tolerance, ala Rudy of New York.  When I-71 backs up, sometimes I cut over Liberty Street to get back home.  And everytime, I see at least three County Sheriff cars, always with someone in the backseat, parked at the worst street corners in neighborhood.

Of course that is the difference, the County knows that crime requires tough policing.  The city on the other hand coddles rioters and scumbags and drives out businesses and taxpayers.

  15. Update: My local paper put out a story on the same organization’s list of the safest and most dangerous metro areas (the survey that the Skipper reports on is for cities). This survey includes more small cities that would not have made it into the other survey because they are small, but their metro areas are big enough to make the list in the second survey. My town, State College, PA, is the #2 safest metro area, second only to Fond du Lac, WI.
