  3. Does this mean that Sharpton can sue for reparations from Thrumond’s family?  Just asking.

  4. Maybe political B.S. is a genetic trait!

  5. Thurmond never owned slaves. Sharpton has never been a slave.  Nothing to see here, unless you are a genealogist.  Move on.

  6. Somehow I can just picture ol’ Master William Thurmond (1796-1855) sitting on the veranda of his plantation fanning himself and chasing away flies with his broad brim hat, watching the slaves picking cotton - and standing behind him with a fresh pitcher of mint julips ....

.... the uppity “house ni**er” butler Mutumbe Sharpton in his freshly pressed house servants uniform. Suckin’ up to “massa”, of course.

Oh Lord, I’m gonna catch hell for giving you all that mental image, aren’t I?

  7. This is just another way to keep racism alive and well in America. WTF is a ‘newspaper’ doing genealogy on another person? Isn’t that invasion of privacy and some such nonsense?

Sharpie must be a wantin to run agin otherwise why else this ‘news’ story?

  8. It takes a bit of digging to get down to the real details. Let’s just say this news is a bit revved up.

Coleman Sharpton was 25 in 1861. He was Al’s great-grandfather. When his owner died, that man’s father sent Coleman to Florida to be owned by the deceased owner’s son, Jefferson Sharpton. Jefferson was married to Julia Ann Thurmond.

“Julia Thurmond Sharpton’s grandfather and Strom Thurmond’s great-great-grandfather, William Thurmond, are the same man.” Which means the family tree branched off around 1790-1800.

“Julia Thurmond Sharpton is Strom Thurmond’s first cousin twice removed.” Not what you would usually call a close relative.

Saying “his people owned my people” is quite the stretch I think.

Al Sharpton is the 3rd generation of preachers in his family. His father Al Sr was a preacher, and so was Coleman Jr. Consider this: Al Sharpton never knew that Coleman Jr was a preacher until the genealogist told him, today. Tight family, huh? Keep that in mind when he suddenly goes all Alex Haley on us.

  9. I just saw Al on O’Reilly. He’s being pretty cool about the whole thing. So far!! So I’ll call the “STROM THURMAND’S FAMILY OWNED SLAVES!!!!!!!!!!” hysteria simple media hype. Al himself isn’t playing that card at this moment in time. Kudos to him.
