I knew you’d own a copy. Mine is a 1969 first edition paperback that I found in an abandoned building in 1976. It’s packed up somewhere; we’re still living out of boxes since we’re trying to buy one of these units and will soon move again.
But that’s neither here nor there. If you have the book in front of you, post some of that tripped out poetry. That was a hoot.
I knew you’d own a copy.
How? Why?
Actually, my copy is also packed away. It’s a normal paperback, and the acids in the paper are eating it alive. I did the copy-paste from a bootleg ebook version I downloaded from alt.binaries.ebook some years ago.
And yes, mine is also a first edition, though it wasn’t found anywhere. Mom bought it for me because the year before she’d given me a box set of The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, which I loved so much she thought I could handle parody.
Little did she know the damage she did to me in ‘69. I was only nine-years-old. This led directly to Monty Python…
Yes, Bored of the Rings, a ‘gateway’ parody.
I am going to have to go out and get another copy now. The last time I read it was 1979! One of the few books that have reduced me to tears of laughter. Some of it was a bit over my head, not being American. Such as the Louisville Slugger reference (Nodruzville? Slugger in the book) and the “Ball Hog” with the Villa Nova (if memory serves) T shirt. It was a work of comic genius without a doubt.
a Louisville Slugger is a baseball bat. #1 brand for many decades.
I have no real clue what you are talking about - however parody and Lord of the Rings do ring bells. Speaking of that - My first hubby and I were living in CA in the mid 70s - it was an experience. At that time (wasn’t it 77?) a nifty little movie came out that everyone loved - Star Wars. Shortly thereafter a film student did a parody - Hardware Wars - if you can get the vhs (have not even seen it since we bought it in the early 80s) - it is a hoot. 4 film shorts made by film students. The parody was good (most especially from someone new to the business) - but Bambi meets Godzilla is a hoot.
Bambi meets Godzilla is a hoot.
And short!
As for what we are talking about, I assume you’ve read Hobbit/LotR by Tolkkien.
Harvard Lampoon did a parody called ‘Bored of the Rings’.
I’ve sent an rtf copy to Drew. Would you like one. It is both funny and obscene.
