  1. Wow! It seems our Aussie brothers aren’t as different from us as I thought. It looks like they too are mostly conservative people who are the victims of their own leftist media claiming to speak for all of them mad

  2. Generally I agree, but I worry about Pete’s phrase “strict military discipline”. Does that merely mean respect for law and others’ rights—or something more?  One of my fears is that we’ll have some neo-fascist reaction to Looney Tunes liberalism.  Then I’ll still have someone’s boot on my neck, the only difference is the boot-wearer will have a different agenda.

  3. Some years ago the Australian government ended the private ownership of firearms.  All privately-owned firearms were confiscated.  As the government passes more restrictive laws to deal with this current situation, where’s the balance of an armed citizery?

We in the U.S. should pay close attention to what’s happening in Australia.

  4. More than likely, the criminal thugs retained their weapons and lawful citizens turned in theirs.  So now what?

My main point was, how will unarmed citizens resist an abusive government?  Politicians prefer to deal with unarmed peasents.

Additionaly, how may unarmed citizens resist armed thugs?  Police can’t be everywhere and sometimes the state police support the armed gangs.

I’m very uncomfortable with any society wherein the government retains the sole source of weaponary.

  5. Oink my fear also that the backlash to all the namby pamby, bed wetting, hand wringing liberals will be a drift toward totalitarianism. Though Mike has a good point. I think it unlikely to affect the US as there is an armed populace. However I sometimes wonder how many of these people that talk the talk, would actually walk the walk if it came to armed conflict? Not so much people with a military background but there are plenty of armchair generals out there.

I do belive that the scenes of rioting in Australia, France and Britain also will become more commonplace and I personally feel (as far as the UK goes) the government does not know how to deal with this. They have preached the cult of multi-culturalism where all cultures are equally valid but this has ensured that the new immigrants don’t bother to assimilate. Why bother when you can have Islamabad in Bradford? The Australians have a bit more of a track record for fighting back. If I was rude I would say it’s ‘cause they’re all ex cons but I’m not that rude! There is eveidence of right wing extremists inflaming the situation there and sadly these people flourish when the government is seen to be failing the majority.

  6. A lot of good points being made.  If Liberalism can devour (formerly tough, pioneer) Canada we ain’t safe either. LBJ: I was more thinking of the Right Wing Totalitarianism of the gun-totin’ militiamen.

  7. Australia had an armed populace until rather recently.  Then the Parliament passed strict anti-gun legislation.  All firearms were to be surrendered and destroyed.

Of course, not all citizens complied.  However, as usually happens, mostly lawful citizens turned in their weapons.  Lawless thugs and criminals retained theirs.

Not a good situation.  If the Intifada has now lodged itself in Australia, how may unarmed non-Muslim citizens resist?  Guess Molotov cocktails are still available and you may always use the Government as your Supply Seargant, but this smacks of armed rebellion.

I still don’t like the trend.

  8. The (law abiding) Ozzies may have lost their flrearms (and most of their unalienable rights) but they still have taipans, tiger snakes, funnel web spiders, and other creepie-crawlies that can stop an enemy dead in their tracks - literally.  Nothing like a little “beastmaster” style counterinsurgency to teach those mooooosie [s]fundam[/s] - er - terrorists a lesson or two in proper and polite behaviour when they are [s]invading[/s] visiting the Land Down Under. Else they end up visiting the Croc Pits at Australia Zoo, those that don’t get envenomated in the night.

(doggone it, howtheheck can I get a strikeout in here)

Don’t mess with Texas. Or Australia… This is not France. Ozzies are not spineless weak little frogs.

  9. Sorry OldCatMan, but if these kinds of laws are passed I’ll just have to be a criminal because they will play Hell taking my hard earned gun collection away.
