Apple Worms

  1. That was sort of weak...That said, I am a long term Mac user and a Reagan Conservative. I have never had any vira, worms, or any other malware that hasn’t gotten to me from some Windows server. Yes they do send out a lot of security updates, but that doesn’t mean that there are multiple attacks. At work, all of my windows friends pay the anti-virus tax every month and have almost daily updates on all the malware forms that attack them. That is a drag on productive work and IMHO unexcusable.

Macs are from one of the most liberal companies out there. ALGORE is on their board of directors, for crying out loud. But they are much more user friendly, and if you look at total cost of ownership, actually cheaper than comparable PC’s. There, I got it out. Standing by for the inevitable flames from PC fanboys…

  3. I’ve tried Mac, but it just didn’t click with me. I’ve used Windows for a long time and have recently switched to Linux. Linux does well for what I need: basic Net surfing, email, and to run my AVON business. My husband runs WinXP since he’s the gamer of the family. I’ve never really gotten the OS bashing. Really, just use what you’re comfortable with and suits your needs.

  4. Skipper,
I never said that I was really infected. Viruses are sent to me, but they bounce off the invisible Colgate shield fo the MacOS. Let me state again, I have never lost any productive time from infections. I have never had to disinfect my computers. I have never had to load anti-virus software on my Macs. I never said that Macs were perfect, but when it comes down to downtime due to infections, bad registries, and all the other things Windows users seem to enjoy spending their time with, they just don’t affect me.

To me it is a right/left hand thing. Some folks learn on one OS, and the other way just doesn’t feel right. Whichever one makes you more productive is the best. That being said, I must point out that Windows is the OS equivilent of the QWERTY keyboard. Most experts would point out the Dvorak keyboard layout is more efficient and faster. However, when typewriters were first being designed, they had to create a way to slow down the typists so that the keys would not run into each other. QWERTY was the answer and became the standard. Windows is similar. When Gates et al stole the window and pointer model from Apple, they dumbed down a bunch of standards so that it was less obviously a rip off. (Please don’t start with the urban legend that Apple stole from Xerox. They bought the rights and hired the engineers.)

I do not wish to convert anyone who is happy with the OS that they use. But… if you are frustrated with using your windows machine, or are at the point where you are going to have to “upgrade” your whole system to be able to run Vista, you might want to cross the street and see what the other side offers. BTW Macs can run Windows (if you really must.)

    Smile

  5. <font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Allan,</font></font><font face="Times New Roman” size="3"> </font><font size="3"><font face="Times New Roman">Since when have you become an advocate of Windows? UNIX is under the hood of OS-X. That is a step in the right direction. Sun or HP or Red Hat have security patches too. They just have a whole lot fewer than Microsoft. Please tell me that you are not advocating Windows as the best platform for running Oracle these days. Have you gone over to the dark side? Are you converting to MS SQL Server?</font></font><font face="Times New Roman” size="3"> </font> <font face="Times New Roman” size="3">Have you been assimilated by the Borg Evil Bill Gates?</font><font face="Times New Roman” size="3"> </font> <font face="Times New Roman” size="3">Stan</font>

  6. Sssssshhhhhhhhhhh ....Quiet, Yeller Dawg. I'm trying to stir up some computer wars here. (I ain't been assimilated yet. I use Windoze for games and a few apps. The rest of the time, like now, I'm on my Red Hat Advanced Server box surfing safely with Gnome desktop and all the goodies without crashes or viruses. Besides, I haven't seen a Windows box yet that ran Oracle worth a shit. Apples don't run Oracle AT ALL! SO there!) (Now I gotta go back to work on my Sun E15k with Solaris 10, 32 CPU's and 64 GB of RAM.)

  8. I surf all over the internet, from news to pron, blogs to shopping. I do not bother with anti-virus software. Until I installed XP I never bothered with a firewall. I don’t bother with any better spam filtering than what Yahoo email provides. I simply delete without opening any email that shows up if its not from someone I know. I don’t download executables, and I have most of the ActiveX and Java features disabled on my browsers. And I never allow Windows to save any passwords. I have never had a virus, worm, or trojan. Once a week I run Spybot (freeware) and Ad-Aware to remove cookies and spyware, which takes 5 minutes; I haven’t had even the simplist spyware get through in years. When I got XP it came with a free 2 year subscription to some anti-viral software. I ran it, but in that whole time it caught exactly nothing, and at that point I was surfing at least 4 hours a day with a constant DSL connection to the internet.

I think the whole virus thing is overly paranoid, but I gather from this post that there are some new XP updates. Thanks for the reminder.

  9. Heh heh heh heh heh, Dell poked their corporate fingers into Microsoft’s corporate eye by allowing the sale of PCs with XP home installed, instead of Vista (aka MELL).  Here is a link to a write-up over this issue.
