  1. Some people are very, very touchy.  I lived in Germany for 4 years and have some familiarity with the scene there.  Remember, Germany has a nasty habit, a proven track-record, of messing around with other countries and killing with cold-hearted efficiency.  Anyone who forgets this has lost the plot.  The Poles will never forget it.  The Brits (and I am a British patrial) should never forget this.  My ancestors fled central Europe to escape the Nazi plague; I will never forget it.  The PC crowd has a right to bleat but it is just that- bleating.  It is far better to remind people of significant repugnant and outrageous historical events with a twist of humor than with outright vindictive hatred, unless the latter is absolutely necessary.  Never forget what happened; it might just keep it from happening again.

  3. Very good point. You’re right.

Actually, in spite of his comments which always seem to rile folks, I did think the ad was more a very clever play on words then anything meant to offend. But then again, with Clarkson, one never knows for sure.

Way back in late 60’s or possibly early 70s, German airline Lufthansa ran radio ads in LA as to encourage ppl to take European vacations.  One of their adverts said,

“Fly Lufthansa. Our pilots know the skies of London.”

Brit embassy not pleased at all and got the ad pulled.  But I’d be willing to bet the ad agency didn’t mean it the way it was taken.

Funniest ad ever was Jerry Dela Fama (spelling?) whose agency had a Japanese client and he came up with something, it may have been Panasonic ...(?)

“From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave Us Pearl Harbour.” Course, it never aired.

  4. Sorry about the “triple smileys"- I’ve never used them before and, in the exuberance of the clicking moment and not seeing any response from BMEWS site, I clicked 2 more times!!  Now I know- the key is to wait!  However, in retrospect, bearing in mind the topic, maybe 3 Dankeshons are an appropriate salutation.  Ha ha.

  5. I did watch this Top Gear episode and my recollection was that the punch line was actually Warsaw to Berlin in one tank. I may be mistaken though. I note Clarkson was also spoken to recently by his BBC producer after she took offence at his warm up act. In the warm up he is supposed to have told the audience that Gordon Brwon was a c**t. Something I would tend to agree with.

I think Clarkson who owns the Top Gear brand and is pretty Conservative tends to enjoy aggravating both the socialist government, and the BBC who are socialist arse kissers. The BBC make a lot of money out of sales of the show worldwide and they know they can’t afford to upset Clarkson or he will take the show elsewhere.

As for the joke. Well whenever jokes at the Germans expense are mentioned I always think of John Cleese in Fawlty Towers. Even the Germans laugh at that one. The Germans are unlikely to be offended, but it is typical of the BBC that they are offended on behalf of the Germans. They do the same thing with anything that might be construed as likely to upset the religion of peace crowd. Even when there are no complaints they still beat themselves up and try and convert the population into thinking they are bad people for not being offended. I hope when the tories get into office one of the first things they do is start to take the BBC apart and put a stop to their blatant left wing bias.

  6. MMM 100 complaints, 6.7 million watched, that looks like a Democrat majority against Clarkson?? did you see him light his pipe on air just after it was illegal?
