This is great news but when you have people like Sen Chuck Hagel and Then Gov. Ben Nelson in Nebraska doing everything they can to keep INS from booting out 4,000 illeagles in Nebraska and forcing the head of INS to resign then we have far more trouble then getting a few thousand arrested.
It is a good start, but is it also a stunt? Michelle Malkin feels it’s a stunt. Follow her links over to vdare.com and to his own analysis. I’m inclined to think it may be a ruse too.
Drat, I’m trying so hard to be a W fan, but it’s getting harder by the day.
Drew, I suspect you (and Michelle) are correct. The timing is too suspicious. My guess is IFCO was thrown to the wolves as a sop to voters.
There’s a good sized discussion on this over at Rightwingnews.com. If this is the only raid, then it’s a stunt. If ICE does this every day or week, then it’s the real deal.
I like RWN reader Don cos’ comment: “Let them earn legitimacy. They voluntarily report to a processing center. Any who have no criminal record (other than illegal entry into the US) are sent to the gulf coast. Their job will be to cleanup and fix the mess left over from Katrina. The one major requirement: They must be finished within 3 months. That would get the gulf coast back and show just how serious they are about becoming useful citizens. If they accomplish the job, they stay. If not, they go.” I’d change it to 6 months, and send them back anyway, but put them on the legal immigration list as a thank you. And start up a committee to look into increasing the quota for Mexico. The way Washington works, that should take about 8 years before they come up with an answer.
I’m becoming a one-issue voter over this. Sure, I’m still for CCW, overturning Kelo and McCain-Fiengold, etc., but this situation is now at the top of my list.
I vote with Ann Coulter - have the illegals build the wall between the US and Mexico. No, no and no way can I go for any type of guest worker or amnesty - it will just compound the problem and encourage more to come over. If 85% of the illegals weren’t Mexican, maybe I’d consider one or the other, but with such a high number, a hop, skip and a dash across the line away, nope.
Maybe rebuild the Gulf Coast, build the wall (as re-imbursement for all the social programs they’ve been illegally sucking dry here)and then deportation. Then maybe 6 months entitled to a guest worker pass which requires them to pay the fine, learn English and so on and so on and so on.
I agree, I don’t support President Bush on this one - who ever has convinced all the politicos in DC that the Hispanics won’t vote for them if they vote for reform (or enforcement) should be shot. ALL of the Hispanics I know personally - don’t vote at all and they were military,(shocked me). So who cares
I read this morning that a large number of these 1,187 aliens arrested have already been (or are about to be) released. 275 were deported immediately. That means about 900 are back on the street. This smells more and more like a stunt to me.
13 milliom or so illegal immigrants in the U.S.? How ‘bout offering them citizenship after a 2 year tour of duty in Iraq after a little boot camp and AIT? I like the wall building idea as well. Kill two birds with one stone.
As for employers...I’ll make this REAL easy. $200,000 fine per violation/illegal immigrant hired.
