A Dangerous Whatsit

  1. Too easy.  I will not give it away but will provide a clue or two.
It is a bridge of sorts, tween the hand and the butt.

  2. It looks like something that would mate with the rear receiver of an AR type weapon; it’s make it a short weapon, and I can’t for the life of me ...
no, the buffer would be an issue. Huh.
    I’m stumped.

  3. Specter is correct, it does make it easier to get a handle on your butt. But I’m gonna edit his comment just a little bit.

  4. Hmm… So did you edit his comment because it was not accurate, or gave away too much?

Posted by baboy    United States   12/16/2009  at  02:25 PM

  5. I never edit inaccurate guesses!

Posted by Drew458    United States   12/16/2009  at  04:05 PM

  6. It looks to be an AR component I am unfamiliar with.

  7. Got it!
Glock/AR stock adapter.  Putting a device on a pistol to make it shoulder steady is, for some stupid reason, against the law in the US, without first registering the handgun as a SBR.
    Made by Endo Tactical.
This killed me!  I knew it was for the AR stock; just needed to think outside the box just a wee bit more.

  8. I won’t claim to have any real idea what it is. I’ve got plenty of clues, but they don’t seem to lead me anywhere useful. I’m not familiar with the M16/AR15/M4 family paraphenalia, so I couldn’t make any guesses there. Rather than doing this as a Google contest, I’m trying to go with the evidence contained in the picture itself. Let’s see, what I do have:

    1. The larger of the two holes appears to be threaded standard US national coarse. This suggests it was designed to thread onto standard pipe. Hard to guess scale from this picture, but from clues in the size of the keying pin attached to the chain at rear, I’ll hazard somewhere between 1 1/2” and 3” pipe. If the pin is 1/4” diameter, the hole would be 2"-2 1/2”. To be sure, that could be wildly inaccurate. If it’s a 1/8” dia. pin, that hole is only an inch or so across. The smaller of the two holes does not appear to be threaded, but that’s just a guess based on not seeing any at any resolution before the picture pixellates.

    2. The square corner at far left and the flat “foot” at far right suggest that it’s engineered in the expectation of needing leverage against something, “hooking” it with the left corner and using the right corner as a fulcrum.

    3. The keying pin suggests that there’s another piece the user would expect to attach at that same far left corner on a regular basis, so it’s not for just leverage against objects at random, but against something specific. I would expect the pin to go through the object it’s keying and back into the body of the piece it’s chained to, but I don’t see a hole for it anywhere.

    4. The checkering is different on the two sides. That on the left is typical of checkering for a solid grip with a hand, and the larger the checkers the more it implies a gloved hand. The checkering on the other side is typical of ladder ends, “load locks” in trucks and suchlike, something you want to get traction against whatever surface you apply it to.

See what I mean? The clues I get from the picture don’t seem to lead me to anyplace I recognize.

  9. Baboy wins it! Yes, this is a gizmo that allows you to mount an M-4 or other short plastic stock on your Glock pistol. Which gives you a short barreled rifle, which is utterly illegal in the US.

He even got the brand right; it’s from EndoTactical.com. It’s their Tactical Stock Adapter, which allows you to mate an M-4 or other plastic stock to your Glock pistol. $154.99, and God help you, you’d better have the proper permits from the ATF.

And welcome aboard Baboy! I saw your registration come up today. Folks who know their gun stuff are always welcome here.

For those who saw the 2 holes and realized it had to be an M-16/AR-15 accessory, good work! But alas, with the relatively diminutive Glock, there’s no need for the recoil buffer spring.

Pretty neat device, but I prefer the rig from Mech Tech that gives you a .460 Rowland rifle from your 1911. It’s not as easy, but it packs a whole lot more punch. I am a huge fan of the .460, and if I can ever spare the $350, I am going to convert my Kimber. It’s what the .45 ACP should have been - 230 grains at 1350fps.

Of course, Spectre Rider had it right away. But hell, he probably already owns one. Which is why I had to edit his comment, as that “$200 permit” bit was a dead Class III giveaway.

  10. This is illegal?

I’m all for banning the average person from owning tank-rippers and anti-aircraft shoulder-launch missiles.  But the gun-grabbers are so damn stupid—e.g. take a legal rifle and slap on a pistol grip and a flash suppressor and suddenly it’s an illegal assault weapon.

  11. Yes, it is illegal. If you mount a shoulder stock to a pistol, the ATF considers it to be a rifle. But rifles must have barrels at least 16.5” long, so a pistol modified this way becomes an SBR - a Short Barreled Rifle. And they are outlawed. Excessively powerful firearms that are too easily concealable.

Does it make sense? No. This one is no more more potent than the pistol by itself, and much harder to conceal. But it is much easier to shoot accurately. Big deal. Most gun laws don’t make much sense, as I’m sure you’re aware.

  12. Actually they are legal.

You just have to live in a state that allows NFA weapons in public hands. Wisconsin is one of those states, and there is a number of them.

The SBR is just a tax stamp and a reclassification to a NFA weapon. The problem with something like that item is that once it is classified as NFA, it never goes away. So, it will Always be NFA.

A number of P-90 owners have bought the 16+ inch versions and have installed the original barrels and paid the $200 in taxes and had them classified as SBR’s. IT isnt really a big deal, one form + $200 and your in. They cant become full auto, but being a SBR isnt really a big issue.

So, in your state it may be a problem. In WI (my state) you can own full auto, too. Just pay your taxes. smile

  13. Not to plug some other site..

    http://www.guntrustlawyer.com

If you plug in SBR in the search box on the right side, you will see a lot of information on SBR classification for Form 1 and other articles on SBR’s. If your interested that is a good site to start with.

  14. Thank you, Drew.  I’ve been reading BMEWS for a couple of years now; enjoy the ‘both sides of the Atlantic’ views I see here.

  15. Fine. What was it that pesky 2A said? “The right of the people to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT be infringed”? _____ them in their posteriors, hard and deep. With a chainsaw. ____ a tax stamp, THAT is UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
Phew. That felt good to say. I don’t own a Glack. But if I did, I’d get one of those.

Posted by cmblake6    United States   12/19/2009  at  12:07 PM

  16. Yeah, cmblake; that 2A really gets in the way of progress(ives) doesn’t it?
I have a Glock; but after I bought my first 1911, the Glock is the glovebox SHTF gun.  Just bought another 1911 today, this one a full sized STI. It sang like a choirboy at the range today.  I’m so proud of it (sniff sniff).

  17. Good man! The 1911 was given to man by GOD through His prophet, John MOSES Browning(pbuh). bowdown
