John could use your help. So could your local food bank, I’m sure.

Tell him the soup can guy from the grocery store sent you. He doesn’t know my name, he never asked for a cent, and he has no idea I’m writing this. I doubt if he has a paypal account, but I’m sure that if anything comes his way for the food bank it will go to the food bank. You can spot an honest man, and he is one.

  1. Scouts ... just another activity.
Kinda says it all, doesn’t it. But it was meant, I think, to be something quite special.

    Good post Drew.

  2. Well Drew - here it is a little different. Yes as a Den Mom and all that I went to Boy Scouts w/#1, did the Girl Scouts (and Scout Leader & Cookie Mom w/#2, and both 3 & 4 did one year w/Scouts (bad groups in KY, no real activities - a lot of fund raising)too. Here, however, my hubby just worked with the Scouts for their annual shoot. Good times had by all - Scout Leaders range from a couple kids (probably just past Boy Scouts themselves) to (damn how to write this) older men (one was a kid in the Navy in WWII). The kids ranged from typical scout boys to really older teens - that surprized me.

Particularly as the Girl Scout Leader, I saw a lot of the dumping off attitude of the some of the parents. But I lead 4 of my older son’s Scouting friends (and him) through (actually it was more dragged) the program to get their religious medal - he ended up being one of the few scouts in his later years having it. And this was in the early 80s - imagine what it is now.

Goodwill here is also good - Sarah & I scrounge for Halloween costume (she goes as people - ‘07 was as Jackie O and ‘08 was as Sarah Palin) - for some things it really is a steal (like my everyday earrings - who can’t pass up $2.00 - besides it then gives me more $$$ for the real stuff I buy for the ‘dressing up’) - and she is a shoe freak. And the people are nice and all the stores I’ve been too (I told you we scrounge) have been clean and nice. Was able to show her (techno geek that she is) a real typewriter - as the store in KY had one for sale!

So I guess it is where you live. I support what you & John are doing and I do agree - we don’t need government to ‘fix’ it - they just muck it up and encourage more and more people to quit doing when they can get it for free.

But the good news is that there is a tipping point to such nonsence - the inevitable - of having too many moochers on the one side & too few earners (i.e. tax payers) on the other side. But even in B. Hussein Obama’s acceptance speech - when he turned to ‘have to make sacrifices’ and such (truths) his adoring admireres became suddenly silent. Perhaps reality was dawning on them - and oh so quickly. Hurts to find out that The One (tm) was no more than a Typical Political Person.
