Does someone have to repay the poor sods who paid out??
Isn’t that the rockhammer Tim Robbins bought from Red and used to break out of Shawshank?
sdkar - nope, sorry. Ya know, I just watched that film the other night, and I remember that scene between the walls during the storm. But I don’t remember the tool. But this is not a rock hammer.
It’s a Democrat Attitude Adjuster....
Important Clue: the name of this thing sounds like it should be one of those racist terms from days gone by, but it isn’t, and never was.
An industrial grade Jew’s harp?
Worse even than that!
My guess is that it’s a tool for scraping the tarter off of horse’s back teeth. You know that horses don’t have teeth in the middle of their jaw, right, just the front ones and a couple of big giant molars in the back. And their gigantic tongues can’t actually move to clean the back teeth. The handles come in various lengths based on the personality of the horse; some get pretty upset when you stick this in their mouth and start scraping around and they tend to kick out in retribution. You want the longer handle for them! As for the “racist” name, this 1880’s era tool is called a pickaninny, because it’s a pick for ninnies too afraid to just put their hand in the horse’s mouth and use the side of a penny to do the job instead.
Hey, wait a second, I put this post up! I can’t be making guesses myself!
Especially wrong ones like this!
It’s a picaroon.
That’s right! It’s not a quadroon, or an octaroon, it’s a pickeroon!
This one is the Penobscot model, made by the Peavey Mfg Co. The people who invented the Peavey, an improved version of the Cant Dog with a spiked end and without the swinging dingle.
Seriously. Fixing the swinging dingle was what made them famous! The Peavey was invented to help loggers break up the log jambs when timber was floating down the Penobscot River in Maine. Peavey has been up in Maine ever since 1857, and they’re still there today.
A pickeroon is a lumberjack’s tool. Also used by lumber mills, and sometimes by firefighters, it’s a good sturdy grasping point on the end of a strong handle. On some models the point is hooked a little. Used for pulling logs, lumber, and heavy trash along the ground or wherever. This is the heavy weight model. The handle is usually twice this length.
with a handle 2 3/8” around, a peavey is a serious working tool:
I’ve actually used a picaroon, and a peavey too! My granddad taught me about them when I was a wee nipper, and showed me how to use them. I was grateful for this when I got a summer job as a lumberjack!
They are really back-saving devices in the woods, and it’s safer using them to handle logs than bending over and trying to use your hands.
Must be the spelling cause picaroon is defined as a pirate or pirate like. So make sure you ask for a Pickaroon folks:
Thanks, Rich! Never was much of a speller.
