where will the deer go
There’s a great big steam shovel sitting by the edge of the little pocket of woods here down at the end of Village Road. For years and years we’ve heard the rumors how that bit of land was going to be sold and additional apartments or condos built there. Every year or two it’s been something different. A McMansion. A small hi-rise. An office park. Townhouse block. Condos. Low income garden apartments and a bus stop for the local no-cost county bus. On and on. For a decade. And somehow nothing ever gets built. But it looks like that is about to change.
You know how it is in NJ: if there are 2 trees and a bush, there are 3 deer living behind them. Until somebody sells that little bit of land, and a builder comes in and puts up a dozen homes on it. And that’s what finally happened here.
It’s an acre or two of scrub woods on a steep bit of hill just feet from the second busiest east-west highway in the state, and the edge of that land sits right on the entrance ramp to the highway. Not what I’d call a premier location. And it’s right across the street from the swampy boggy end of the park’s pond. I wouldn’t even call it a fair location. It’s suckville. But maybe that made it really cheap land. What do I know?
Whatever. From what I gather, yet another set of plans have been submitted and approved. This time it’s going to be a smaller build, a single row of garden apartments facing Village Road. At least that’s what the drawing looks like. 8 or 10 units, instead of the 24+ from the last plan. Will it be low-income housing? HUD? Will all these units be immediately occupied by the dozens of Mexicans who all work at the diner at the top of the hill and rent apartments down on the edge of town, and all ride the same bicycle up and down our road all day and all night going back and forth? Who can say. We’ll have to wait and see.
I almost feel sorry for the construction workers who are going to cut down this acre or two; these woods have been home to so many deer for so long, that it’s pretty much a guarantee that anyone clearing land there is going to get Lyme Disease.
And the deer? Bah. Who cares. They’ll probably run out on the highway and get killed. Just like any other day around here actually.
