Lost!

Atten-HUT, Zoomies! Yep, we’re lost again. Go figure. We’re back over CONUS, out West and over a USAF base that doesn’t have a lot of aircaft stashed around. The reason is that this base is one of the USAF’s largest training facilities, if not the largest. This is where the Air Force trains the most important people it hires. No, not pilots. This is where aircraft mechanics are trained and they are much, much more important than hot-shot pilots. Just ask any pilot.

This is where 18-year-old young men, fresh out of high school learn how to break down and put back together $5 billion aircraft. If you’re just out of school and wondering what to do with your slacker self, go see your local US Air Force recruiter and tell him The Skipper sent you. What you learn at this school, American Airlines will pay you dearly for when you get out. Trust me.

It is also home to several other training schools, including the one I went to for 11 weeks to to learn how to talk to the nasty, old Burroughs B-3500 base level computers via punchcards and through comlinks to IBM mainframes at AFAFC in Denver so that everyone would get paid. This is where I first got involved with computers in the early 1970’s. The rest is history.

The weather down there is pretty nasty right now at 62 degrees and severe thunderstorms about to move in, so we better get on the ground quick. Final hint: this base is only a short distance from the state line with another state. Ready ... set ... GO!

“Pay Attention, Airman! This dingus attaches to the watchamacallit and that activates this whoozit here by rotating the whatzit in a 90 degree cycle, causing the airplane to stay in the air which will make your pilot intensely happy with you.”

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
