Huzzah!
Well good for the two of them. Drag out the gilded carriages, polish up the fancy horses, press the colorful antique uniforms, fill the ancient cathedral with flowers and bunting, and set the Fairy Tale Event meter to 11.5: the British are having a full-on Pomp And Circumstance do. And the whole world took a few minutes off to watch and say yup, they still know how to do it right, from the funny hats to the golden bishop. And even the weather cooperated.
The bride was simply radiant in an elegant gown by some really famous expensive designer, with elegant lace on the sleeves, fancy needlework all over, and a modern train that only required two attendants to carry it, and after two weeks of the press playing guess which tiara, it turned out that she wore the priceless antique one utterly crusted in giant precious stones made from expensive metal. And she wore it perfectly, bigod.
No, I’m not being at all sarcastic. I don’t follow weddings, and I haven’t paid any attention to this event at all. But it is inescapable today, and in a way that’s fine with me. We can all use a day off from the insanity and disaster going on in the rest of the world. I don’t follow fashion, so the dress designer and all those details were lost on me. I thought the bride looked wonderful, perhaps a bit too thin, and the couple seemed super happy. Good for them. The Queen was all smiles in her elegant outfit and matching hat in a pleasant shade of golden butter, and all the other princesses looked classy and chic in their modern get-ups and fancy hats. Only one outfit was a bit over the top enough to be questionable, but you can bet it cost at least half your annual income so we’ll call it “avant garde” instead of “fug”. And no protesters or terrorists were able to get any camera time to muck up the event, although I hope they tried, and that the London police dragged them off and beat 7 kinds of hell out of them several streets away where there were no crowds or television cameras, for not showing Willing on the Big Day. Such thing are simply not Done, and the learning of that lesson carries a Price.
Now that all the foreign news correspondents are exhausted, and have run through their entire vocabulary of words that mean “super”, “expensive”, and “perfect” in several languages, even French, the coverage has shifted a little to younger brother Harry, who is throwing an all night party at the palace for 300 of the couple’s closest friends. And for those who make it through that until sunrise tomorrow, there will be a proper English Breakfast featuring massive quantities of bacon and other fried foods. See, even the meal the day after will be done right.
