Good For America, So Obama’s Probably Against It

Finally, after trading this land for that land, Arizona mining companies have the go-ahead to extract billions of tons of copper from the bottom of their MILE AND A QUARTER DEEP mine shaft. Billions. Of. Tons.

Of the #1 strategic element needed by the military and by industry. The stuff that’s been in such short supply that peelers have been stealing pipes out of houses and wires off of phone poles. Copper is our lifeblood mineral. And after that other giant mine caved in a year or so ago ... well, this is what we need. We really, really need to get new copper flowing again.

So naturally, some bullshit Indian claims it’s all sacred ground and musn’t be touched. Oh yeah? Well fuck you. It wasn’t sacred shit until you thought you could either make a buck off of it, or stick it to YT.

In Arizona’s Copper Triangle, 1.6 billion tons of copper ore has been trapped beneath 7,000 feet of rock for billions of years and under a pile of paperwork for a few more, but a development last week has finally put the motherlode of precious metal within reach.

Geologists estimate Resolution Mine could supply the country with 25 percent of its copper needs for the next 40 years, for everything from home and building construction, car manufacturing, power connectivity and wind turbines to medical supplies, appliances and money. Resolution Mining Company, a joint project of two of the world’s biggest mining firms, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, has already spent $1.2 billion to dig a 28-foot-in-diameter shaft some 1.3 miles down, but until just days ago, environmental concerns and the complaints of Native Americans left it uncertain whether the mine would become an engine of Arizona’s economy, or remain merely an impressive hole in the ground.

“Environmentalist extremist groups have done everything they can to kill it,” said Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz. “However, the environmental impact is incredibly minimal. The project has been studied for a decade. Detractors are taking extreme positions that are not based on sound science.”

Read the rest to find out how the Native American greenies want to shut it down. Honestly, screw them. Copper is our #1 vital resource. Period. No planes, no guns, no motorcars without it. Not a single luxury. Like Robinson Caruso, life without copper (and zinc!!) is primitive as can be.

Me? I’m simply amazed that they’ve dug a tunnel nearly 7,000 feet deep. And even more amazed that there’s a cubic mile or more of copper down there, just waiting for them.

Almost 7000 feet isn’t even a record depth, not even for a “base metal mine” like this one. It’s deep, but the Kidd Creek copper mine up in Timmins OT is half a mile deeper. And those gold mines in South Africa can be nearly twice as deep.
