Autopsy Report On Terry Schiavo

The report is out. Terry was not strangled by her husband, there is no proof she had an eating disorder, her brain was shrunken to half its normal size, her brain had massive damage, she was blind, she died of dehydration, not a heart attack .... any more questions?

LARGO, Fla.—An autopsy on Terri Schiavo backed her husband’s contention that she was in a persistent vegetative state, finding that she had massive and irreversible brain damage and was blind, the medical examiner’s office said Wednesday. It also found no evidence that she was strangled or otherwise abused.

But what caused her collapse 15 years earlier remained a mystery. The autopsy and post-mortem investigation found no proof that she had an eating disorder, as was suspected at the time, Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin said.

Autopsy results on the 41-year-old brain-damaged woman were made public Wednesday, more than two months after her death March 31 ended a right-to-die battle between her husband and parents that engulfed the courts, Congress and the White House and divided the country.

She died from dehydration, Thogmartin said. He said she did not appear to have suffered a heart attack and there was no evidence that she was given harmful drugs or other substances prior to her death.

He said that after her feeding tube was removed, she would not have been able to eat or drink if she had been given food by mouth, as her parents’ requested.

“Removal of her feeding tube would have resulted in her death whether she was fed or hydrated by mouth or not,” Thogmartin told reporters.

He also said she was blind, because the “vision centers of her brain were dead,” and that her brain was about half of its expected size when she died 13 days following the feeding tube’s removal.

Michael Schiavo said his wife never would have wanted to be kept alive in what court-appointed doctors concluded was a persistent vegetative state with no hope of recovery. The Schindlers, however, doubted she had any such end-of-life wishes and disputed that she was in a vegetative state.

The medical examiner’s conclusions countered a videotape released by the Schindlers of Terri Schiavo in her hospice bed. The video showed Schiavo appearing to turn toward her mother’s voice and smile, moaning and laughing. Her head moved up and down and she seemed to follow the progress of a brightly colored Mickey Mouse balloon.

They believed her condition could improve with therapy.

However, doctors said her reactions were automatic responses and not evidence of thought or consciousness, and Thogmartin’s report went farther.

“The brain weighed 615 grams, roughly half of the expected weight of a human brain,” he said. “This damage was irreversible, and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons.”

Thogmartin said the autopsy report was based on 274 external and internal body images, and an exhaustive review of Terri Schiavo’s medical records, police reports and social services agency records.

He said hospital records of her 1990 collapse showed she had a diminished potassium level in her blood. But he said that did not prove she had an eating disorder, because the emergency treatment she received at the time could have affected the potassium level.

Terry Schiavo: Closure Today

Today, the final act in the Terry Schiavo story will be played out ....

TAMPA, Florida (AP)—The medical examiner’s office plans to release its autopsy report Wednesday on Terri Schiavo—findings her family hopes will shed light on the cause of the collapse that left her severely brain-damaged 15 years ago.

Schiavo, 41, died March 31, nearly two weeks after the feeding tube that had kept her alive was removed under a court order obtained by her husband, Michael Schiavo.

Her death ended a bitter legal battle between Michael Schiavo, who said his wife did not want to be kept alive artificially, and her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who disputed doctors’ finding that she was in a vegetative state and insisted she could improve with therapy.

Terri Schiavo’s brother, Bobby Schindler, said Tuesday his family is eager to see if the report indicates what went wrong when her heart stopped beating for several minutes in 1990.

Testimony in a 1992 civil trial indicated that her heart stopped probably because of a severe chemical imbalance brought on by an eating disorder. The Schindlers, though, do not believe she had an eating disorder and have accused Michael Schiavo of abusing his wife, a charge he vehemently denies.

Keep your eyes peeled for this report later today. Open for discussion ....

Pouring Gasoline On A Wildfire

That’s what it’s like .. giving viagra to sex offenders free of charge, paid for under Medicaid. You’ve got to be kidding me, right?

ALBANY, N.Y.—Scores of convicted rapists and other high-risk sex offenders in New York have been getting Viagra paid by Medicaid for the last five years, the state’s comptroller said Sunday.

Audits by Comptroller Alan Hevesi’s office showed that between January 2000 and March 2005, 198 sex offenders in New York received Medicaid-reimbursed Viagra after their convictions. Those included crimes against children as young as 2 years old, he said.

Hevesi asked Michael Leavitt, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in a letter Sunday to “take immediate action to ensure that sex offenders do not receive erectile dysfunction medication paid for by taxpayers.”

A call to Leavitt’s office was not immediately returned Sunday.

According to Hevesi, the problem is an unintended consequence of a 1998 directive from federal officials telling states that Medicaid prescription programs must include Viagra. His office discovered that the state was helping sex offenders pay for Viagra by checking Medicaid pharmacy expenditures against the state’s sex offender registry.

Evidently you’re not kidding me. Of course, this is happening in New York, or at least that’s where it was discovered. The truth is the same rules apply in every state in country. I wonder how many sex offenders and child molesters are taking the little blue pill to keep their sickness going? Actually, I don’t want to know. I just want to cut off their .... medication .... and certain body parts (if you catch my drift). However, since this occurred in New York, the Hildabeast had to have her say ....

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement that it was “deeply disturbing and runs contrary to the purpose of Medicaid, which is to provide health care coverage for uninsured, low-income individuals.” Clinton, a Democrat, urged Leavitt to look into the matter, and said she would explore legislative options.

New York’s other senator, Democrat Chuck Schumer, said at a press conference in New York City that he hoped the issue could be resolved without a bill, but he’s prepared to offer one if needed.

“While I believe that HHS did not do this intentionally, when the government pays for Viagra for sex offenders, it could well hurt many innocent people,” he said.

Alas, alas! Poor Hillary is “deeply disturbed”. Of course, it is Congress (where she allegedly works) that passed the laws that allowed this to happen. In a related story, it’s amazing that Chuck Schumer is now “the other Senator from New York” instead of the senior Senator from New Yawk. I guess we know now who wears the pants in that state.

In the meantime, how do you feel knowing that your tax dollars have been keeping perverts’ erections stiff? Personally, I am pissed!

Food Pyramid and Fat Folks

They have demolished the old food pyramid and built this new one. The new one has a staircase on it so you can run up and down and melt pounds of unsightly lard off of your fat ass. There is no word as to how many slaves died in the construction of the pyramid.

Good news for old fat guys everywhere…

People who are overweight have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight, federal researchers are reporting today in an unexpected outcome to the newest and most comprehensive study of the impact of obesity.

Die you skinny little bastards!

From The “DUH” Department

Children who watch a lot of TV are more apt to become bullies. Well, no shit, Sherlock!!

I’d read about this last year and thought I’d blogged about it but in a cursory check could not find the post so here are a couple more links to the effects of TV on children.

They deal with ADHD.

One says TV causes ADHD. I tend to believe this because if you take a good look at programming, try and time how long ANY image stays on the screen.  Usually never more than a second or two.  Now, you take those constantly flickering images, the constant bouncing back and forth of the camera not giving a young child’s mind time to settle on one image and absorb it (why do you think kids LOVE to have the same story read over and over and over?) and what do you think will happen to that kid’s brain?  It “LEARNS” that everything is like that and so it will then translate into a child that can’t stand still.  Constantly wants stimulation.

The other, while not totally refuting it, makes reference to violent behavior.

Really Odd Bits

bat Another example of socialized medicine at its best.

And we wonder why people are always saying Brits have horrible teeth?

Check this out.

Somehow I can not see an American going up to our President and handing over their teeth.

bat Remind me never to ride horses in Australia.  I could get attacked by birds.

bat They always said you could go blind from it.  Apparently there may be SOME truth to the saying except the manner of execution leading to the blindness is different.

So the next time you grab for the “little blue odd-shaped pill” ask yourself this:  “Do I get my rocks off or do I go blind?  Rocks off?  Blind?  Rocks off?  Blind?  Rocks off?  Blind?”

Remember, only you can prevent blindness.  On the plus side, if you can’t see what you’re humpin’ then your chances of getting any improve, right?

bat Re-defining, “going clubbing!”

And don’t forget to wear your fur hat.

bat It’s bad enough you can’t find a dentist in England.  But apparently you can’t find cops, either.

So the next time you’re there and you get robbed, do the investigation yourself. They don’t have time.
