Another bad week of summer bowling

Week 9?: 0-7 again. Not Happy.

I’ve come to the conclusion that a 90% handicap is just too much. While it is quite easy for beginning bowlers who have an average of around 90 to roll a 150 game, it is almost impossible for better bowlers to roll 60 pins over average. And for really good bowlers it is impossible; you can only get 300 points for a perfect game. We are most of the way through the short summer season, and 3 of the 4 top positions are held by teams of beginners. That isn’t right. Last night we bowled a team of young ladies, all of them barely 21. They showed up drunk and continued drinking. The 90% handicap gave them 231 points. That’s like having an extra team member, and a really good one to boot. We simply could not overcome that huge an advantage. All they had to do was roll their balls down the middle of the lane, while we had to bowl our very best just to try to survive. They had fun, we had frustration. We lost the first game by 12. We lost the second game by 2. Then either we fell off or they did a bit better, and we lost the last game by 56. This means we’re pretty much out of the running for the top slots at this point.

There might be a little good news though. I’m picking up a new ball, and I’m trying to get one for the Mrs. as well. I’ve been using an Ebonite Total NV, but it’s just too long a ball for the lane conditions. I simply can not throw the ball slow enough with enough hand on it to get it to hook properly. Maybe if I could stand out in the parking lot and throw it from there it would be far enough. So I think that the new Ebonite NVD might do the trick. It’s advertised as being a shorter ball ... but is it short enough? In theory it’s for heavier oil too, which we rarely face in regular leagues. Is a medium-heavy oil ball the wrong way to go? I need to figure this out quickly, because the alley gives a 40% discount during the summer, and that’s over soon. But if I act now I can get this ball from them, drilled and ready to roll, for the same price as a raw ball from the online stores.Whatever I pick up will have more thumb pitch though, because getting my damn thumb out has been my big issue. It’s very hard for me to do. Maybe a Twisted Fury might be a better choice? Any ideas about weights? I went to 16lb balls in hope that it would slow me down some, but I can put a lot more hand on a 15, with ease.

My wife has been using a Brunswick MVP Nemesis for the past few years. We picked that one because she uses a 12 pound ball, and it was one of the very few that actually has a core in that weight. Most balls under 13 pounds are just a coverstock. The Nemesis is too short for her, and often rolls out at the mid-lane. Polished up it goes longer, but with a very slight arc. I want her to find something better. Something that can go longer but still break hard. Something with a modern coverstock, some kind of core (weight block) and as low an RG as possible. So far the only thing I’ve been able to locate is the Brunswick Avalanche Solid, which has an RG of 2.636. That’s actually a low RG for a 12 pound ball, though it seems outrageously high to those of us who throw 15 or 16 pounders. Getting the specs for 14 - 16 pound balls is easy, but getting the specs for the same balls in the lighter weights is like pulling hen’s teeth. Any suggestions?

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
