Guess I Learned My Lesson

I’ve got that parking space sized garden here in the front of our condo on the edge of the parking lot.

I dug the whole thing in last year, pulling out the tired old soil, sifting out the rocks, getting rid of a few weeds and half a foot of old pine needles, and then mixing and laying in nearly a ton of the very best topsoil. It was more work than I could manage, so while I did get almost all the bulbs planted, I didn’t get the mulch laid down nor any pavers for the little paths.

We had a very strange winter - one snow storm actually - and an odd spring. My carefully selected heap of deer-resistant bulbs - daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, lilies, and alliums - all decided to grow at once, instead of coming in in stages like they were supposed to. Seriously, I had it planned just so. It was going to be like a living fireworks show, with a burst of blooms over here, and then a burst of blooms over there, and then a bunch of little poppers everywhere when those gave out, and for a summer long finale, a high rise selection of purple puffball and baby’s breath-like alliums each more than 3 feet tall.

image

Alliums, first cousins to garlic and onions

Well, I got a little behind the ball, and things got a bit out of hand. Duh, it turns out that my WonderSoil that grows flowers so well also does a super job for weeds. And with the odd early growth, I had a super dense zone of greenery, with the spent tulips and daffys starting to turn brownery. It was time to go in and weed, and to do a bit of transplanting. Yes, transplanting. You might recall that I tried to do wildflowers the year before on that patch of ground, but with the drought and the heat that summer they barely even sprouted. Surprise, some of the seeds remained viable, and I had a dozen or so young plants in the front putting out little flowers in an array of shapes and colors. My plan was to transfer them over here to the side yard along the top of the cliff, where last year’s butterfly bushes failed, but more of the same failed wildflowers were doing well. Give those a bit more company, and let them take over the whole embankment if they could do it.

But I knew I had a big weeding project. The wife and I have been hand plucking a few of the bigger varmints every day as we go by. And I’d planned to go out there last evening to have at it, but I was tired and just felt too sticky in the muggy weather. So I made a plan to get up and at ‘em early this morning before the heat woke up.

And I did.

And got the shock of my life.

I feel ... kind of violated actually.

ISIS behind attack at Florida Club?

Something here about a fox in the hen house where the liberal chickens have come home to roost?

But hey, let’s let thousands more of these animals in every day, unvetted, or worse, “vetted” by the deliberately inept anti-American minority jobsworths that fill BRA the federal government.

ORLANDO, Fla. — As many as 20 people were killed and 42 injured Sunday morning when a gunman opened fire inside an Orlando nightclub, police say.

The FBI classified the shooting spree as an act of domestic terrorism.

An on-duty officer was at the club and responded at about 2 a.m., returning fire and backing the gunman into a bathroom at Pulse Nightclub, 1912 S. Orange Ave.

At that point, the incident became a hostage situation, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.

Investigators were in contact with some of the hostages inside the club and at about 5 a.m., “the decision was made to rescue the hostages that were in there,” he said.

OPD SWAT stormed the building, using an armored vehicle to break down a wall and explosive devises as distractions, he said.

Officers engaged the gunman, who was shot and killed, and were able to rescue 30 hostages, Mina said.

One officer was injured when he was hit in the head by one of the gunman’s bullets, but sustained only an injury to the eye, thanks to his Kevlar helmet, Mina said.

The helmet “saved his life,” he said.

While the shooting was considered an act of terrorism, FBI spokesman Ron Harper said there was no credible information that would indicate there was a further threat to Orlando or the rest of Florida.

Investigators were not immediately able to determine the shooter’s motivation, but said there is a possibility that radical Islamic views could have contributed, Harper said.

“We do have suggestions that individual may have leanings toward that particular ideology, but right now we can’t say definitively,” he said.

Yeah, because the terrorist was named Mohammed, and this was a frickin’ GAY BAR.

ORLANDO, Fla. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun took hostages and opened fire inside a crowded Florida nightclub, killing approximately 20 people and wounding 42 others before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, police said Sunday.
...
Law enforcement sources told CBS News the gunman has been identified as Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen from Port St. Lucie. Mateen was born to Afghan parents in 1986.
...
CBS News reports that authorities are “leaning towards Islamic terrorism” as a motive. Law enforcement sources said the shooting had similarities to the terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.

According to at least one source, three days before this ISIS promised to start killing Americans in Florida.

Once Upon A Time

Before Government Intervention:

image

In 1962, the average octanes of gasolines in the U.S. now stood at 93 for regular, 99 for premium and 102 for the few super-premiums still left on the market. Those numbers would increase only slightly in the next few years to around 94 octane for regular, and 100 for premium by 1967.

After government intervention:

There are three types of gasoline grades generally available in the United States. Regular gas has an octane rating of 87. Plus or midgrade gasoline has an octane of 89 and premium has a 92 octane rating.

Although I must say, when I do get behind one of these restored 60’s cars in traffic, many lovingly brought back to better than mint condition, they stink. The stench of raw gasoline leaking out the exhausts and from every other point on their engines is enough to knock you dead.  I really do like the cleaner air, but did it have to come at such a cost?

Man, this is some clucked up news

Judge Orders Reparations To Be Paid To Former Slaves

And wouldn’t you just know it? Not only is this from the UK not the USA, but the slaves in question are white boys. Lithuanians! Say whhaaat?

And they were kept in slave-like conditions, not bred and sold generationally. Nope, they were merely abused chicken catchers in Kent. Worked to shreds, heinous working conditions, dogs set on them, pay withheld, kept as indentures, etc. Modern slaves, so to speak.

Who even knew that chicken catching was a job, or that running a “gang” of them was a career path? Only in the UK! [ Drew imagines chicken gang members hangin in the barrio, colors up and flashin’ signs. Would that be giving people the bird? Eggsactly!]

image

Lithuanian migrants trafficked to UK egg farms sue ‘worst gangmaster ever’

[ 2015 ]Six workers bringing legal action against Kent-based DJ Houghton describe working as chicken catchers in inhuman and degrading conditions

A group of Lithuanian migrants who were trafficked to work in farms producing eggs for high street brands are suing a Kent-based gangmaster operation and its directors, in the first case of a UK company being taken to court for claims relating to modern slavery.
...
the workers bringing the legal action have described inhuman and degrading conditions. They said they were driven to farms and factories around the UK to undertake back-to-back eight-hour shifts for days at a time.

They said they were the victims of violence, described the process of being debt-bonded on arrival, and spoke of their accommodation riddled with bedbugs and of becoming so hungry that they ate raw eggs. They have reported being denied sleep and toilet breaks, forcing them to urinate into bottles and defecate into carrier bags in their vehicle.
...
They also allege that their pay was repeatedly withheld, while Lithuanian supervisors working with the Houghtons abused and assaulted workers, intimidated them with fighting dogs and threatened them with instant eviction if they complained. Accommodation provided was dirty, overcrowded and unsafe and infested with bed bugs and fleas.

A Guardian investigation in 2012 revealed that the trafficked Lithuanians were working in supply chains producing premium free range eggs for McDonald’s, Tesco, Asda, M&S, and the Sainsbury’s Woodland brand. The farm sheds they cleared of chickens also produced eggs under the Freedom Food brand, and for Noble Foods, owner of the Happy Egg Company.

Noble Foods is the UK’s largest egg company and it and its chairman, Peter Dean, have been major donors to the Conservative party. The company helicopter has been lent on occasion to the prime minister, David Cameron, for election campaigning. Cameron promised earlier this month to tackle modern slavery in the UK.

It is notoriously hard for victims of trafficking to get justice.

[ must resist the urge to call this a chickenshit lawsuit. Must. Resist. MUST!! ]

[ 10 June 2016 ] Chicken catchers win claim against Maidstone gangmaster
Six men have won a legal case against a Kent gangmaster firm they claim trafficked them to the UK to work as chicken catchers.

The Lithuanian men said DJ Houghton Catching Services used a Lithuanian trafficker before exploiting them.

The firm lost its licence after police raids in 2012 and was branded “the worst UK gangmaster ever” by the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA).

The amount of compensation due to the men will be assessed at a later date.

The judge found the company unlawfully withheld wages and failed to ensure the workers had adequate facilities to wash, rest, eat and drink.

He also found it paid the men for the number of chickens caught rather than for the time worked and spent travelling.

The men claimed they had to travel for up to seven hours before being put to work in filthy conditions without proper equipment or clothing.

They also said they threatened and abused by supervisors with dogs.

Lawyers for the Lithuanian men said the case was the first time the High Court had ruled in favour of victims of trafficking against a British company.

“It...should be seen as a warning to British companies that they must eradicate all forms of modern slavery from their businesses, whether in the UK or elsewhere,” said Leigh Day partner Shanta Martin.

Someday Peiper will return and cover all this UK excitement for us.  No new word on his recovery, although he did have a birthday last month. I doubt that it was a very happy one. Poor old chumley.

Damn, No Peacemakers Used

The Cowboy Way

image

An attempted bicycle theft in a Walmart parking lot was foiled by a cattle rancher on horseback, who chased the thief down and lassoed him until the local police in southern Oregon could arrive.

The bicycle was stolen from a bike rack outside a Walmart in Eagle Point, a town about 170 miles south of Eugene, Oregon, at around 10am on Friday morning. The woman who owned the bike and several others gave chase on foot but were unable to catch him.

Then a rancher named Robert Borba brought his horse out of its trailer, mounted up and chased the thief down, according to Chris Adams, an officer with the Eagle Point police who responded to the 911 call about the theft.

“When we arrived, there was a large crowd standing around a younger gentleman who was on the ground, the rope around his ankle, hanging on to a tree,” Adams said. Victorino Arellano-Sanchez was arrested and charged with theft, the police said.

“I seen this fella trying to get up to speed on a bicycle,” Borba told the Medford Mail-Tribune. “I wasn’t going to catch him on foot. I just don’t run very fast.” He added: “I use a rope every day, that’s how I make my living. If it catches cattle pretty good, it catches a bandit pretty good.”

Not a lot is known about Borba because he is new in town, Adams said, but “it appears he will be a good fit. Eagle Point is a small city, and people watch out for each other. That’s exactly what he did.”

David Stepp said that he had been sitting in his car nearby when he saw the cowboy trotting across the parking lot on his horse after the thief, who was trying to escape on the stolen bicycle.

When the thief dismounted and tried to flee on foot, Stepp watched as the cowboy lassoed him by the ankle. The thief then grabbed a tree and held on to it until the police arrived. “Best day of my life,” Stepp said.

“I was laughing too hard to intervene,” he said. “I’ve seen it all, but I’ve never seen anything like that in my entire life.”

The offending schwoogie-beaner was neither dragged back to town nor hung from the tree. That would have been raycis. He was merely detained while the entire town full of white people came by to laugh at him, until the police came and took him away.

YEEEE HAAA !!!

Dying To Be A Ginger Is For The Birds

Seagull Masala

image

Welsh birdbrain falls in the soup, comes out a redhead.

A seagull turned bright orange after he plunged into a vat of chicken tikka masala.

The bird fell in to a container of the food while trying to scavenge a piece of meat from a food factory bin on Monday.

He was rescued by workers at the site, in Wales, and picked up by a volunteer for Vale Wildlife Hospital near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

Staff at the centre used washing up liquid on the seagull to remove the bright orange from his feathers.

They managed to return him back to his original white colour but have not been able to wash away the smell of curry.

Lucy Kells, veterinary nurse at the hospital, said: “He really surprised everyone here - we had never seen anything like it before.

“He had fallen into a waste vat of curry that was outside, it was chicken tikka masala.

The thing that shocked us the most was the smell. He smelled amazing, he really smelled good.

h/t to my brudda

There isn’t a woodpile tall enough

A community of thieves, grafters, and gibbs addicts

Obamaphone Fraud: Half a Billion Every Year

And the FCC just added broadband internet to that gibbs bag

But don’t worry, YOU’RE PAYING FOR IT.  So prepare to pay more. Three times as much.

The federal subsidy known as the “Obamaphone” or “Obamanet” program could be losing nearly $500 million to fraud annually, according to a top Republican on the Federal Communications Commission.

Commissioner Ajit Pai made the accusation Wednesday in letter to the Universal Service Administrative Company, referring to the FCC’s Universal Service Fund, which provides a monthly $9.95 subsidy for telecom service to low-income consumers.

The subsidy is limited to one per “independent economic household,” or IEH, but telecom companies have the ability to override that restriction if applicants check a box stating they represent a separate household, even if they have the same address.

...

Pai wrote that data obtained by the FCC last month revealed carriers had enrolled nearly 4.3 million subscribers using the IEH override process between October 2014-April 2016, or 35.5 percent of total subscribers for the period. “It is alarming that over one-third of subscribers — costing taxpayers almost half a billion dollars a year — were registered through an IEH override.

...

The program was originally established to help low-income consumers in rural areas obtain access to 911 services. It was expanded to include cellular devices in more recent years, and expanded in March to include Internet service.

Right. Free cell phones for all my peoples. And now, free internet. And not some lame slappy internet. Broadband baby, the good shit.

Not that this is anything new, nor is it even the full story or even the real number of the cheaters. This is just the number of NEW cheaters, more than a third of all new signees. Old cheaters are still in the system ...

Last year [2011], a federal program paid out $1.6 billion to cover free cell phones and the monthly bills of 12.5 million wireless accounts. The program, overseen by the FCC and intended to help low-income Americans, is popular for obvious reasons, with participation rising steeply since 2008, when the government paid $772 million for phones and monthly bills. But observers complain that the program suffers from poor oversight, in which phones go to people who don’t qualify, and hundreds of thousands of those who do qualify have more than one phone.
...
an FCC audit of the program last year showed that many participants in the program were taking more than their fair share. According to Businessweek:

269,000 wireless Lifeline subscribers were receiving free phones and monthly service from two or more carriers.

Right. All of those accounts got squashed. But that was 4 years ago. How many million more accounts are there? 12.5 million in February 2012, about 12 million new ones from late 2014 to now, figure in at least 8 million new accounts from 2012 to 2014? That’s 33 million phones. More than one person in ten has free telephone service, courtesy of the government, aka your wallet? What the flippity fluck? Who the frick is paying for all this ??????????

Oh, you are. I am. And it’s about to get worse. All the little gibbs grabbers just got a service increase. Nice fat internet. With wi-fi I’m sure. So free porn and online games! Now let’s give them top end big screen name brand “phablets” so they don’t feel “out Jonesed” by the Joneses who actually work for a living and spend $800 hard earned dollars on a shit-hot smart phone (pretty stupid if you ask me, but I’m a Luddite, and it’s their money so it ain’t my business).

BOHICA, BOHICA ...

FCC commissioner: Expect a broadband Internet tax

The federal government cannot afford the subsidies being poured into telecommunication services, unless it’s planning to impose a new tax on broadband Internet Service, a member of the Federal Communications Commission said on Wednesday.

“It’s telling that the agency is already spending money in anticipation of getting a greater amount of revenue from the Universal Service Fund,” FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai told a Senate panel.

“We boosted the E-Rate budget by $1.5 billion per year last year. By all accounts, next month we’re going to expand the Lifeline program to broadband without any meaningful budget or cap. That money is already being spent, and it has to come from somewhere. I would respectfully submit to you that ultimately, it’s going to be in the form of a broadband tax,” Pai added.

Dewing It Rite

So I’m working at the guard shack this morning, and Mrs. Rich Lady pulls up and gives me a big heavy beetle-browed scowl. She rolls down the window of her AWD Luxury E350 Mercedes* and snaps “It figures!!! Doesn’t it just figure?” and then drives off.

Hey, I get all kinds up at the shack in the early hours.  Today it was all the dog show ladies looking for the Holiday Inn. No worries. But Mrs. “RL” is one of my nice people, so I gave it a thought. And then a look, followed by a laugh ...

Up at the top of the hill here two streets come together in a T intersection. The public Banks Street meets our private Village Road. Over time a series of parallel cracks has developed about where the join is. Wear and weather have turned three of them into pot holes. Deep pot holes.

Mrs. RL stopped to ask if our condo association was going to patch the road. I told her I didn’t know if it was even our road to patch but I’ll ask, so perhaps it might be better to call the township. “Well I was by the other day, and if you drove in that hole you could damage your car. So I had my daughter get a traffic cone from over there and she put it in the hole. At least people can see and go around it.”

And she wasn’t making it up: about 2/3 of a medium cone was sticking up out of the street. The other two potholes were coneless. And people have been slowing down for that corner and missing the hole for a couple of days now. But she’s the kind of woman who can get things done, so more power to her when she makes that call and I pity the fools at DPW who try to give her the run around.

She must have made quite an impression. Township DPW came around, and took away the cone.  Instead of filling in the holes with gravel and asphalt, Can’t have that. Why, it’s a danger, foreign objects protruding from the road surface and all !

And then they drove away.

* It just blows my mind that so many people who live here drive such expensive cars. Come on. This isn’t low-income housing, but it isn’t far from it. A small house in the neighborhood costs about three times what these units sell for, and more. So why are they driving cars that cost half as much as the condo? It cracks me up to see all the Audis, BMWs, Mercedes Benzes, mega-pickups and mighty SUVs that live here. Dude, maybe if you drove something cheap like instead, like a used Corolla, you afford an actual house?

** another piece of this pie that makes me smile: right around the corner from this is an asphalt diveway/top coat/tar sealer/power washing company. Every morning I watch their small fleet of trucks head out, often towing great round black metal tanker trailers behind them, filled with fresh hot tar. No, they weren’t hired for this job, but they could do it without hardly even slowing down. 3 scoops full of goop ought to be more than enough to fill each pot hole. Next time I see one of them stuck in traffic I’ll ask the driver if they have a contract with the township.

Please break your neck when your swelled head hits the glass ceiling

Hillary, 24-7

No, I really don’t if it’s some kind of red letter day for feminism that a woman has become the official presidential nominee of one of the two major political parties. She’s a liar, a murderer, a thug, a traitor, and corrupt as all get out. Electing Bronco Bama because he was half black was foolishly insidious; electing her because she is nominally female is 1000 times worse: we’ve known what she is for more than two decades now. And she hasn’t changed a bit since her early days when she was thrown out of the Watergate investigation for cheating.

CNN Depicts ‘History-Making’ Hillary Clinton As Glowing ‘Golden God’

image

CNN used some very noticeable video editing to transfigure Hillary Clinton on Wednesday’s New Day. Correspondent Jeff Zeleny ran footage from the Democratic presidential candidate’s victory speech on Tuesday night that transformed Mrs. Clinton into a glowing figure. He hyped how Mrs. Clinton was “savoring a triumph in her long Democratic primary fight — exactly eight years after extinguishing her first trailblazing campaign.”

Blow me. This is the real Hillary Clinton:

“Hillary Clinton is ethically unfit to be either a senator or president — and if she were to become president, the last vestiges of the traditional moral authority of the party of Roosevelt, Truman and Johnson will be destroyed.”

--- Democrat Jerry Zeifman, a counsel and chief of staff of the House Judiciary Committee (once upon a time)

window fix

Yes, I’m finally getting around to trying to fix the window in my old Saturn. It’s been on the fritz since last winter, stuck in the closed position. I’m pretty sure it’s a bad switch, because for awhile the window would go up and down just fine every third blue moon, then be dead again. Right. So I searched and searched, and in all of the internet I found two ... two ... actual GM 21021947 switch assemblies in stock. Used. One looked a little better and has a 30 day warranty, so for the extra $5 I figured it was worth it.

I took the door apart yesterday. Well, I tried to. Got the inner handle off, got the opening lever off. Found that the door has a solid steel inner skin. I couldn’t get anywhere near the electrical connection, nor could I even see the motor, and I could just barely see the ends of the regulator arms. Screw that. I need to repair the inner panel anyway because the two parts blew out all their plastic connecting “rivets” several years ago. I’m going to do some afro-engineering and stitch the two parts together with some wire, and hold them in place with dabs of epoxy. So I’ll have to drill 50 or 60 little holes through both panels to run the stitches through. Time consuming!

Then I can figure out if I can glue the overhead light back up. That fell out the other day and is hanging by a wire. Works fine, but tends to bonk me in the head going around corners.

Ah, the joys of driving ancient cars.

No word from Pieper, but I did manage to get a card and letter off to him. Finally. I’ll send him another one tomorrow. I figure I only owe him about 100 cards and letters by now.

not news

So Hillary has clinched the nomination. YAWN. As the Error Presumption, the entire world knew she had the slot before she even said she was even thinking about running.

And you know damn well she will now NEVER be indicted for anything. Never. Ever. Not even if Trump wins. Lift rug edge, sweep.

But it will be interesting to see what Bernie’s bomb throwers do now.

OTOH, it may be news that the MSM is releasing this story the DAY BEFORE the big California primary. Just to tip the boat even further in Hitlery’s direction. Would our media do such an underhanded partisan thing? [Snerch! Snort!] Duh, without a doubt.

A spokesman for her challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, pointed out Monday that Clinton hasn’t won the Democratic primary yet. Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said Monday that the current number depends on superdelegates instead of pledged delegates — and therefore isn’t an official victory for Clinton.

“It is unfortunate that the media, in a rush to judgement, are ignoring the Democratic National Committee’s clear statement that it is wrong to count the votes of superdelegates before they actually vote at the convention this summer,” he said in a statement.

“A rush to judgement”?? Hmm, we’ve heard those words before. What comes next, another go round of “a willing suspension of disbelief”?
