moonbats everywhere alive and well

I have never been able to understand how Bob Marley achieved sainthood, but apparently, he did.
I guess it came with dying.  Like had he lived, would anyone care?  Could be, considering the sort of ppl who like wearing hair that looks disgustingly dirty. I suppose that type would buy anything.

A headline that greeted us one morning was this.

“Rastas in prison allowed reggae CDs for worship.”

Hey ... it’s a sort of free country so anyone can worship anything or anybody they want to.
All you have to do is believe in someone or something ‘religiously’ and bingo. Bob’s yer uncle. (Brit expression)
Of course, free country or not there are some things you can not be religious about. Well, you could but you’d run into some serious problems.
Like what if ( in today’s world this could happen) what if someone decided Hitler was worthy of the same adulation as Marley, and decided to build a religion around him.  ??  What?  You don’t think some may already?  Or maybe build a religion around a lump of coal. Bet you could get followers and soon be declared an established religion.
So anyway, all I’m saying is that the possibility exists for any old damn thing.  And it will all be based on human and civil rights, and a strong desire on the part of the powers that be, not to ‘offend’ anyone.  I guess a religion based on AH is a bit ott. I just used that as an example, but it could never happen in our diverse and modern world.  It would most certainly offend Jews and so that’s off the table.  For the time being.

Now RASTAS get special treatment in prisons: Followers of religion made famous by Bob Marley are allowed shakers and drums (but no marijuana)

Rastafarianism is now one of 18 religions recognized in prison
The new rules were put in place in November last year
Rastafarian prisoners are given what they need to worship
They are not allowed to smoke marijuana - which they see as a sacrament

By Stian Alexander and Jack Doyle, Home Affairs Correspondent

Rastafarian inmates are being handed Bob Marley CDs, drums and shakers after their religion was officially recognised by prison chiefs.

New rules mean Rastafarianism is an approved religion alongside Christianity, Islam and other major faiths.

The pack has been created to ensure Rastafarian prisoners can pray together in a ‘fulsome and harmonious way’, a faith advisor said. However, the religion’s followers have been told that one common element of their religious practice is barred: they cannot smoke cannabis in jail.

The change in policy came after an unnamed inmate appealed to Nigel Newcomen, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

He ruled that the Prison Service was in breach of the Equality Act 2010, and said Rastafarianism, whose followers worship Haile Selassie, the former King of Ethiopia, as God and smoke cannabis as a ‘sacrament’, should be recognised.

Rastafarians are permitted four days ‘holiday’ off work in prison each year to celebrate festivals, and are given access to a ‘Rastafari Heritage Resource Pack’.

It includes a list of ‘allowed items’ provided by the National Rastafari Chaplaincy for weekly ‘Groundation’ (Holy Day) ceremonies. Among them are a CD or DVD of Rastafari drumming, music and chanting, including reggae tracks by Bob Marley, and percussion instruments.

In addition prisoners are given a small Rastafarian flag, a picture of Haile Selassie, a selection of his speeches and a copy of the King James Bible. However, cannabis remains banned.

A spokesman for The Rastafari Faith Advisors to the Prison Chaplaincy Service said: ‘This pack provides information, texts from His Majesty’s speeches… some of the best-loved reggae tracks, as well as information that sets Rastafari in the context of black history.

‘Every detail in the pack has been double-checked to ensure that no further blocks or barriers are placed to prevent Rastafarians from meeting and giving Ises [praise] together in a fulsome and harmonious way.’

The National Offender Management Service, which runs prisons in England and Wales, recognises 18 religions. They include Paganism and Zoroastrianism, an ancient Iranian religion.

At the time of the 2011 census, there were 7,906 Rastafarians in England and Wales - up from 5,000 in 2001 - making it the 14th largest recognised religion recorded by the survey.

Adherents of the faith are forbidden to cut their hair, which is why they grow dreadlocks, refrain from eating meat (especially pork), are opposed to contraception and abortion, do not drink, believe in reincarnation and smoke marijuana to increase their spiritual awareness.

muzzies hard at work ripping the heart out of western civilization

Well bloody hell.
This is what you get in a liberally diverse and multi-cultural islam loving, muslim excusing society.

Reading this article you might be excused if you believe anyone woke up. OK, one or two. But what next?

How about this one?

One of the schools being investigated over extremist infiltration cancelled its annual visit from Father Christmas last year.

Teacher Vicky Hubble, who organised the event at the secular Ladypool Primary School, was allegedly told to cancel it by the new Muslim headmaster, Huda Aslam.

He is said to have told her there would be no presents and ‘no mention’ of Jesus being the son of God.

According to a fellow teacher, Mr Aslam wanted to reduce festivities to little more than sing-alongs to songs such as Jingle Bells, but was forced to reinstate the Christmas assembly by Birmingham Council. However, Santa remained banned.

So this should be no surprise. In fact, the story has been getting coverage for more than a week now. But in time, things will settle down because it’s very difficult giving away your country when other nonsense gets in the way.  Once this is no longer news, the enemy will be at work on something else with the aid
of useful pandering idiots.
Last one out .....

Islamic school hardliners ‘confiscated Easter eggs from pupils’ as head of Ofsted takes charge of inquiry into ‘Muslim Trojan Horse plot’

Schools being investigated over plot to introduce radical Islamic teaching
Birmingham schools allegedly targeted by Muslim hardliners
‘Morality squads’ of older students allegedly smashed pupil’s Easter eggs
Mother of student claims talk of Christmas and non-Muslim festivals ‘banned’
Ofsted expected to place five schools in special measures after failings found
Sir Michael Wilshaw, Chief Inspector, will now take charge of the probe
Tahir Alam, governor allegedly at centre of plot, could be removed from post

By Chris Pleasance and Laura Clark, Education Correspondent

Pupils who took Easter eggs to class allegedly had them confiscated by ‘Muslim morality squads’ patrolling a school at the centre of a probe into claims Islamic hardliners are attempting to infiltrate and run secular state schools.

A mother of one of the pupils, who did not wish to be named for fear of reprisals, claimed groups of pupils were confiscating toys and chocolate from younger children and accused teachers of turning a blind eye to it.

The revelation comes as Ofsted announced Chief Inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw will personally oversee inspections into a number of Birmingham schools allegedly targeted in an attempt to bring hardline Islamic teaching into classrooms in a ‘Trojan Horse’ plot.

According to the Daily Express, the mother said: ‘Older boys are going round in these morality squads telling off girls if they do not wear veils.

‘My daughter tried to bring in an Easter egg for a friend and one boy grabbed it and smashed it against a wall.

‘All talk of Christmas and other non-Muslim festivals is banned. The teachers turn a blind eye to it.’

More Mark Steyn Please

What all the above stories have in common, whether nominally about Israel, gay marriage, climate change, Islam, or even freedom of the press, is that one side has cheerfully swapped that apocryphal Voltaire quote about disagreeing with what you say but defending to the death your right to say it for the pithier Ring Lardner line: ‘“Shut up,” he explained.’

A generation ago, progressive opinion at least felt obliged to pay lip service to the Voltaire shtick. These days, nobody’s asking you to defend yourself to the death: a mildly supportive retweet would do. But even that’s further than most of those in the academy, the arts, the media are prepared to go. As Erin Ching, a student at 60-grand-a-year Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, put it in her college newspaper the other day: ‘What really bothered me is the whole idea that at a liberal arts college we need to be hearing a diversity of opinion.’ Yeah, who needs that? There speaks the voice of a generation: celebrate diversity by enforcing conformity.

Right on target. The drones have been well trained.

Read Mark Steyn’s essay, The Slow Death of Free Speech, at the UK Spectator. Before it gets banned.

must read more carefully

Acci-Dental

Dental appointment today. Got ready, got over there right on time, walked into the waiting room at 2 minutes to 10.

“Who are you? Why are you here?”

So I identified myself, said how I had a 10am appointment.

Clickety clicky click through the digital schedule ... “Um, no, sorry, you’re appointment isn’t until 1pm. The doctor isn’t even here until noon.”

D’oh!

Hey, I got the first digit right. Now to work on that tricky second digit and that all important AM - PM thingy.

Pump it back up the line

Portland OR: Punk takes a pee in the reservoir. City throws out 38 MILLION gallons of water.

image

The city of Portland, Ore., has been forced to dump millions of gallons of drinking water. Why? Because someone urinated into a water reservoir.

Surprising still, this isn’t the first time this has happened.

The latest incident took place about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Cameras captured three teens near the Mount Tabor Reservoir No. 5. One of them approached the iron fence and apparently got close enough to relieve himself directly into the reservoir.

The three teens were apprehended, and the 50-million-gallon reservoir was taken offline for testing.

Thanks to the teens, the Portland Water Bureau will have to dump 38 million gallons of drinking water, said administrator David Shaff.

“Our customers have an expectation that their water is not deliberately contaminated,” he said.

All three teens received citations for trespassing; one was cited for public urination.

Shaff told the Oregonian newspaper that the teen knew exactly what he was doing.

“It’s stupid,” Shaff told the newspaper. “You can see the sign that says: ‘This is your drinking water. Don’t spit, throw, toss anything in it.’ He’s four feet away from that sign.”

This story is all over the place. here.  And here. And here. And here. And plenty of other places. Lots of pictures ...

image

... and lots of enraged opinions.

But ... how about some facts please?

0) [because Fact Zero isn’t really germaine to the story] 38 million gallons is a lake 1000 feet long, 200 feet wide, and 25 feet deep. It’s a nice big pond, or one helluva swimming pool. But it’s pretty tiny as actual lakes go.

1) The water in this holding pond is downstream from the treatment plant. Once it was pumped out of the local reservoir, it got chlorinated, fluoridated, filtered, and whatever other processing was necessary. Then the water was sent to this holding area, so that the extra chlorine or whatever could evaporate.

2) Portland is in violation of federal standards by having an exposed evaporation pond. Hey, the “pure” water in here is now exposed to airborne dust, dirt, bird crap, bugs, acid rain, leaves, otters, and whatever else can fall out of the sky or crawl under the fence. Bad bad, naughty Portland. Yes, it’s nearly their own fault this happened, what with putting a public jogging path around the pond. Guys, guys, in our post 9-11 world, there’s just no way you let the general public that close to everyone’s water. Close enough to have a pee is close enough to throw in some poison. Oh Hell no.

3) Yeah, the jerk took a whiz in the pond. Dilute a pint of urine with 50 million gallons of water ... which is 200 million quarts, which is 400 million pints. So the terrible pollution rate is 1 part per 400,000,001. Or 0.00000000249, or 0.0000000249%, or 2 1/2 parts per billion. Infinitesimal, but ewww, it’s pee-pee.

I don’t know where the evaporation pond is relative to the treatment facility. Probably not terribly far away; you’d want the same crew at the water plant overseeing everything. So, I’d suggest two things:
1) pump the water back into the treatment plant and clean it up again, or hook up a temporary filter on the output pipe until this batch of water has been sent out in the pipes. That should make everyone less squeamish.
2) Along with a ticket for public urination, these 3 owe the city or the water company the cost of fixing this.

But don’t ... ahem ... piss away a small lake full of nearly perfect water. Especially when you’ve got drought conditions in several places on the Left Coast, or near enough to it. Be green, but don’t be stupid.

England’s Concrete Hearing Aids

Long, long before the real BMEWS “ultima-Thule” kept us safe, a conceptually similar but completely mechanical system guarded London during WWI and into the mid 1930s. AEWS; the Acoustic Early Warning System. And while there are little bits and pieces of it still dotting the English countryside, the most impressive part still exists in Denge, Kent, just behind the beach at Dungenes, a stone’s throw east of Romney Marsh, on that little point of land a few miles south of Dover where the Channel seems to hit its narrowest point.

image

Worked great, but a real bear to aim: Percy Rothwell and his cast concrete parabolic reflector

image
85 years later: the “three sisters”: the 200’ wall, the 20’ dish, and the 30’ dish

[decimal map ref 50.956246, 0.953723] Once known as the quietest place in Britain, today the land around this proud nose of the old island is anything but. An airport right next door, row after row of vacation cottages just the other side, and all the busy traffic running up and down the coast, coming and going from the nearby Chunnel ... not to mention all the ships in the Channel, right there, or all the planes flying in or out of Heathrow shuttling back and forth to the Continent. Or that pesky miniature rail road! And even if they were all gone, you’d still have the bleating of the sheep, all those Romney lambs, up and down the meadows. Ah, but Once Upon A Time ...

London had been bombed repeatedly during the Great War. The Germans would send over giant Zeppelins at night, or enormous Gotha bomber planes by day, and bomb the city with relative impunity. Although neither of these aircraft were very fast, you simply could not hear them coming until they were only 6 or 7 miles away. And that left hardly any time to get some fighter planes up to defend the city. Something had to be done.

Something was. A whole series of “hearing trumpet” listening devices were invented, and some of those inventions even slightly worked.  But it took some insight, and the application of some actual science, to get it right. Sound could be reflected off of a hard surface, and it could be focused if bounced off a curved surface. And those results were quite impressive indeed.

A 1916 account of tests of a sound mirror considered the invention to be a success: “A man 100m distant, reading a newspaper in a low voice was heard perfectly. Airplanes were heard up to distances of 8 kilometers.” Precursors to the concrete mirrors were cut directly into the chalk of the Kent hills, and there were experiments with acoustic mirrors at Hythe before the 1923 mirror; an earlier 20 foot cast concrete mirror had been built alongside a building lab, workshop, store and provisions for technical assistance to live on site. An acoustic research station was also built at nearby West Hythe.

Primitive sound locators were used on the Western Front to locate artillery and enemy aircraft as early as 1914, however it was events away from the Western Front that provided the real impetus for developing means of detecting and tracking aircraft by sound. In May 1915 Zeppelin and Shutte-Lanz airships of the German Army and Navy started bombing targets around the Humber and Thames estuaries. London was attacked for the first time on the 31st of that month and by 1917 the airships were being replaced by twin
engined Gotha and Giant aeroplanes. In total 300 tons of bombs were dropped on Britain during the First World War causing some 5,000 casualties, a third of which were fatalities. Some form of early warning system was badly needed, especially to counter the night raids.

Following encouraging experiments with a four foot diameter prototype built by a Professor Mather a 16’ mirror was cut into a chalk cliff face at Binbury Manor between Sittingbourne and Maidstone in July 1915. The mirror was shaped to form part of a sphere and a sound collector was mounted on a pivot at the focal point. The collector was usually a trumpet shaped cone connected to the ears of the listener with rubber tubes but experiments with microphones were under way before the end of the war. The listener would move the sound collector across the face of the mirror until he found the point where the sound was loudest. Bearings to the target could then be read from vertical and horizontal scales on the collector.

Professor Mather and his colleagues carried out a series of experiments with this mirror and produced a report which claimed that it could detect a Zeppelin at a range of twenty miles.

Interesting bit: These guys did the basic research and built in large scale, what we today call parabolic microphones and can hold in our hands. They called them “sound mirrors”.

From 1930 until 1935 the mirrors participated in the annual Air Defence of Great Britain exercises with the RAF. The 200’ mirror was the long range lookout, telling the operators of the 30’ and 20’ mirrors where to listen.
They in turn tracked the incoming aircraft and reported their readings back to a central control centre which calculated and plotted the raiders’ position. In 1932 the 200’ mirror detected aircraft at a range of 20 miles when the unaided ear could only hear them at 6.5 miles and on another occasion at 30 miles when an unaided listener could only hear them at 5.5 miles.

So, as a system, this worked very very much like the German radar of WWII. One set to give you a general bearing. Another set to make it precise. And a third set to guide a stealthy blacked out night fighter plane right onto the target.

The real problem was that airplanes developed at a much faster pace than did manual acoustic location technology. By the time the 3 mirrors at Denge were up and running, airplanes had become faster than they could track. And these were the best of the bunch - other, older, prototype models still dot the Kentish hills.

The real deathblow came when someone else realized that nearly the same job could be done electronically, and went out and invented radar. And that was that for AEWS.

By the beginning of the Second World War the mirrors became obsolete, and Rothwell went on to prominence for his work on missile guiding systems and radar. At the time, however, the mirrors were almost objects of ridicule, and referred to by his colleague physicists as “Rothwell’s Folly.” Recently Peter Kendall, the English Heritage Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Kent, has explained the reasons for the preservation of the mirrors. “Standing like huge modern sculptures in the otherwise featureless gravel, these structures are beautiful and fascinating, as well as historically important for the critical role they were designed to have in defending England.” Now that the mirrors are being hailed as objects of artistic merit, it seems cruelly ironic that the “sculptor,” once ridiculed for their construction, should not, until now, have received credit for their design.

I like how Mather’s / Tucker’s / Rothwell’s mirror shapes so closely resemble the radar antenna arrays of a generation or two later. A focusing curve is a focusing curve. Pity that the English gave these early inventors such a rough time for so long. It’s only in the past decade or so that they’ve woken up to the heritage they have here, and have made great strides to preserve it and to educate folks about it.

There is even a little sound mirror for public edification in a nearby park you and a friend can try for fun. Next time you visit the Military Canal be sure to give it a try. But please, BYOB (bring your own bombers). Actually, you stand in front of the mirror, and a friend stands 75 feet away on the other side of the canal, and whispers in your direction. And you can hear him just fine.

Neato, eh what?

The definitive work on this subject seems to be a very rare 2009 book called Echoes From The Sky by Richard N. Scarth. What a great title. Unfortunately the Hythe Civic Society printed so few copies of this book, the only book they’ve every published, that remaindered prices are quite silly.
minor update: Oops, I was wrong. Scarth used Hythe Civic Society to publish Mirrors By The Sea in 1995. A 40 page pamphlet. Another great title, and probably nearly the same content as the later book, except much less of it. I gather Scarth is the living expert. Alas, this book too is impossible to find at any rational price.

Please Read This

One of the better essays I’ve found on the projectionism and mindset of today’s left. It may not be telling you anything new, but it puts all the bits in line to make it easier to see the bigger picture. It’s 20 minutes very well spent. Daniel Greenfield writing on The Paranoid Party. Home run. A+. FTW!!

To the conspiracy theorist, law is only a tool of the conspiracy. There is no such thing as compromise, only the supreme entitlement of grievance. Anything you can do to your enemies is fair because they already did it to you… and worse.

Political paranoids are totalitarians… and totalitarians are political paranoids. The modern Democratic Party has become both. Its paranoid totalitarianism runs on conspiracy theories that justify its politics of personal destruction and its abuses of power. It has accepted the left’s classic formula of the conservative political opposition as a reactionary force that is the source of all evils in society.

If the Republican Party and the conservative opposition embody racism so thoroughly and covertly that there is nothing non-racist about them, then there is nothing left to do but to destroy them. Having reduced the right to a total evil with no redeeming qualities, destroying them seems downright benevolent.

If the right really is totally racist, if even their most benevolent programs and policies conceal a hidden racist agenda, then there’s nothing else to do but to destroy them.

There’s no way to leave behind racism, except through the destruction of the Republican Party.

Ordinarily intelligent adults would have trouble taking paranoid ravings seriously. Or so you would think. But it’s surprising how sensible even the looniest conspiracy theory can seem if you dress it up in a tuxedo and take it out for a night on Fifth Avenue.

Totalitarian governments in Russia and Germany maintained a ruthless grip on power by circulating conspiracy theories so ridiculous that no intelligent adult should have believed in them. But that abstract optimism in human reason doesn’t hold up to 5 minutes of MSNBC. It’s entirely possible to be wealthy, well-educated and a MENSA member while believing poisonously stupid and malicious things that a child could disprove in 5 minutes.

It’s not because they’re stupid. Like Agent Mulder, they want to believe. They need to believe.

If the Democratic Party isn’t the progressive force standing against Republican bigotry, then what is it? An alliance of urban technocrats, corrupt community organizers and corporations? A Socialism Lite party that is despised by most European Socialists for its backwardness? A machine for printing money and moving it around to its special interests?

The average MSNBC viewer, New York Times reader and progressive suburbanite is not interested in a close look at his political movement or its track record. Instead of giving him something to believe in, his party’s media outlets give him someone to hate. His political identity is shaped not by what he stands for, teachers’ unions, unsustainable debt and an incoherent foreign policy of platitudes, but by his resistance to the Tea Party hordes who want to put black people back in chains, put women back in the kitchen and put homophobes back in the CEO’s office at the Mozilla Foundation.

The politics of paranoid hatred is the crutch of mental cripples who protect the source of their dysfunction by projecting it onto phantom enemies.

This is just a small part. Please, follow the link and read the whole thing.

suppressing individual dissent while maintaining the appearance of democracy

The British historian Roland Huntford warned in his 1971 book The New Totalitarians that Sweden has perfected the methods of suppressing individual dissent while maintaining the outward workings of a democratic system. He feared that similar methods might be adopted elsewhere in the Western world.
That time—the early 1970s—was just before the wave of non-European immigration hit Scandinavia. Huntford’s book therefore does not deal directly with this issue. But he does pinpoint the serious repression of dissent in Sweden and its dangerous lack of intellectual defenses. Perhaps that is the nation’s most damaging flaw. He also noted the extensive Socialist indoctrination, the all-intrusive bureaucracy and the fact that after generations of Social Democratic dominance, the country seems to view itself as an ideological state. It is not hard to see how these factors could become very toxic when combined with mass immigration.

It’s just a 40 minute drive by car across the Øresund Bridge from the troubled town of Malmo in southern Sweden to Denmark’s capital city Copenhagen. Sweden shares a land border with Finland in the north plus a longer sea border across the Baltic Sea. Norway and Sweden share a 1,630-kilometer long land border which happens to be one of the least protected national borders in the world.

Sweden is now becoming so repressive, and the problems related to rampant mass immigration so big, that the country could represent a future security threat to neighboring nations.

H/T Front Page

The above was how the article ended.

When I can and these days somewhat less, I look at foreign news and wonder if folks in my much missed home in the US, have time to read the press from other places outside the USA.

Anyway …. the following is how this article started and I have cut large parts out for space and time.  I’d recommend folks read all of it unedited. Makes for quite a read, as do the comments that follow.

Not surprisingly of course, one or two comments deal with the serious threat to peace and stability the those darn Jews represent.  And we can all understand that, being as how Jews have committed themselves to suicide bombings all over the world, and have insisted that everyone must accept Judaism as the one true faith, have flown planes into buildings and more recently kidnapped as many as 100 young girls from a school in .....

Oh wait. I think that might be another group.  This obviously requires some serious research.

On April 4 2014, in Malmö District Court in Sweden, the provocative artist Dan Park was sentenced to three months in jail for hate speech (“hets mot folkgrupp”) for his works of art. The prosecutor even wanted the artist examined for mental illness, similar to the way Communist dictatorships have treated dissidents. The court did not support this suggestion, however. Park and his defense lawyer have indicated that they will appeal the verdict.

Ingrid Carlqvist, the editor of the newspaper Dispatch International, commented that the verdict essentially amounts to a ban on satire in Sweden, at least if the satire involves ideologically protected immigrant groups.

At the same time, and with a heavy heart, Carlqvist announced her own decision to leave her native Sweden. The repressive and totalitarian atmosphere in the country has simply become intolerable, especially if you happen to be a critic of Islamization, Multiculturalism or mass immigration.
Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city. It is set to become the first Scandinavian town with a Muslim majority population. In recent years, it has achieved a certain notoriety for its crime problems.

The wave of robberies the city has witnessed is part of a “war against Swedes.” This was the explanation given by young robbers with immigrant background for why they are robbing native Swedes. The sociologist Petra Åkesson interviewed boys between 15 and 17 years old, both individually and in groups. “When we are in the city and robbing, we are waging a war, waging a war against the Swedes.”

This argument was repeated several times. “Power for me means that Swedes shall look at me, lie down on the ground and kiss my feet.” The boys explained, laughingly, that “We rob every single day, as much as we want to, whenever we want to.”

Yet suggesting that the ongoing rise in violent crime might have something to do with mass immigration of alien and aggressive cultures is quite literally banned by law continue

Still No Bullets

The Continuing, Never Ending Ammo Shortage

As we enter the spring of the 6th year of our “temporary” ammunition shortage, a lot of folks just aren’t buying the old standby reasons and excuses any longer.

Here’s one reason that can’t be argued with too much: guns need ammunition to work. Gun sales are still at stratospheric levels; after a 2 month decline in the middle of the worst winter in ages, monthly 2014 gun sales are again outstripping their 2013 monthly sales. Those monthly sales, in turn, were moer than those of 2012. 2012’s were more than 2011’s. And so on. Here are the latest numbers, straight from the FBI. Notice how the total number of NICS checks in 2013 was just about the same as the total number of checks done in 2006 and 2007 combined. It’s a madhouse out there. I would not be at all surprised to see 2014’s total numbers equal double 2008’s. Barack Obama, greatest gun salesman in world history.

image

Add to this mix the never ending, always increasing demand for copper. And how one of our biggest copper mines was closed last year due to a pit collapse. You can’t make brass (or gilding metal) without it. I haven’t heard of any lead shortages yet, but I did notice how the last lead mine in the USA was closed late last year. Zinc goes into brass too. Anyone have new stats on that? 2012 production was up about 10% over 2011, with the industry reporting demand growth for the 4th year in a row. Copper production is also up, with secondary feed production (ie recycled copper) growing fastest. Heck, demand for copper is so high that plumbers and builders have switched over to plastic pipes in houses, so that the thieves won’t steal them. Copper pipe and wire theft is rampant.

So high metals demand is one aspect. All these huge government ammo contracts are another. Did you know that BY LAW the government gets first crack at ammo production? Not just the military, but to any federal agency or department, homeland security, emergency responders, even firemen? No wonder the EPA, both DOEs, the Post Office, and all are doing what they are.

EPA raids on brass makers only puts a tiny dent in the market. Sure, it adds a lot of fear, but it only impacts production a little.

Rulings against certain kinds of ammo that prohibit their import keep a few million other rounds off of our markets too. But compared to the billions of rounds sold, and the demand for billions more, this one is another drop in the proverbial bucket. Shitty move though, considering a similar kind of bullet is legal to sell on military surplus American ammo. You know, if there was any of that to be found.

Hoarders and profiteers. Everybody wants to blame them. The evil Daddy Warbucks guys. Can’t find ammo at Walmart, but you can get all you want for 5 times the regular price on eBay. Really? Really? What kind of buying power do you think these folks have, that they can snap up the entire output of a $170 billion industry? Can they make a dent? Maybe so. Can they eat up all of it? Hell no.

Continuing idiotic gun control legislation by states like NJ and NY aren’t having much impact ... especially not if more than a million NY gun owners are deciding to flout the law. Good for them.

So there you have it. Mostly. The old saw “ammo companies aren’t going to invest fortunes in more loading machines just to respond to a temporary spike in demand” doesn’t hold water any longer. Sure, for a 90 day spike it makes sense. For a 1 year spike it might make sense. But more than half a decade? No. Any good capitalist company would have ramped it up by now. If they were allowed to. And that’s another can of worms right there, because we hear that they are. But that hasn’t made any difference yet.

Latest worry? Dire predictions that the shooting war in Ukraine will start in earnest the day after Easter, which will cause every last round of 7.62x39 the world over to evaporate. Let’s wait a few days on that one and see.

Bottom line: metals production is running flat out, but demand never stops increasing. More guns means more ammo needed, and more guns have been purchased during this current regime than in the previous 20 years combined ... and it ain’t over yet.

keep your revolution at home

UPDATE: In that corner of the world, there is almost always more to the story than what you see at first ...

The Royal Jordanian Air force strike Wednesday, April 16, against a combat vehicle convoy from Syria destroyed an Al Qaeda raider force on its way to attack US military targets in the kingdom, debkafile’s military sources reveal. Jordan’s first assault on a target outside the country took place on the Syrian side of the border opposite the eastern town of Ruwaished.
This episode brought to the fore how dramatically the threat al Qaeda-Iraq poses to Jordan, the US forces based their and Israel has escalated.
Amman has not disclosed where the air strike took place, who rode in the destroyed armored vehicles and where they came from.

According to debkafile’s counterterrorism sources, they were driven by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) fighters, coming from the western Iraqi province of Anbar. To avoid running into Jordanian military formations around Ruwaished, the group moved through Syria in the Abu Kemal region and, after refueling and collecting extra fighters and arms, turned south and aimed for the Jordanian border, where their expedition was abruptly brought to a close.

Our intelligence sources report that their target was a secret US-Jordanian training facility situated west of Ruwaished, where Iraqi army troops are being instructed in advanced counter terror combat tactics.

The Jordanians don’t say how they knew the ISIS vehicle convoy was heading their way. It stands to reason that US or Jordanian surveillance aircraft detected the vehicles on the move. Since there was no time to drop Jordanian commandos to apprehend the terrorists in Syria before they crossed the border, it was decided in a hurried conference between Amman and Washington to send the Jordanian air force into action.

Horry clap.  It would be easy enough to “prove” this if larger pictures were available of the airstrike results. But so far all I can find is the one or two pics of that single burning gray pickup truck. OTOH, how would you or I be able to tell ISIS from Eskimos? OTTH, a whole pile of dead raggies with guns, and the remains of big guns alongside the remains of numerous vehicles, would lend credence to this claim from (the usually very well informed) Debka Files folks.

Jordanian warplanes hit and destroyed several vehicles trying to cross the border from Syria, a government spokesman said on Wednesday, underlining Amman’s concern about incursions from areas controlled by Syrian rebels.

“There was an attempt to infiltrate across the border from Syria by a number of vehicles,” said spokesman Mohammad al-Momani, also a cabinet minister, told Reuters.

A Jordanian security source said the targets were Syrian rebels in civilian cars mounted with machine guns.

It was unclear whether rebels who have dominated swathes of territory along Syria’s southern border with Jordan might have been seeking refuge inside Jordan from fighting with President Bashar al-Assad’s forces that has raged in the region.

Momani said the kingdom was increasingly worried about infiltration from Syria. “We are worried about cases of infiltration ... and reports that talk about armed groups that are close to the border and the absence of security there.”

The Syrian state news agency SANA said no Syrian vehicles were involved in the incident. ”What was targeted by the Jordanian air force does not belong to the Syrian army,” a military source was quoted by SANA as saying.

“There was an attempt to infiltrate across the border from Syria by a number of vehicles,” said Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani, also a cabinet minister.

A Jordanian army statement said the incident took place at around 10:30 a.m. when several camouflaged vehicles attempted to traverse rugged frontier terrain and disregarded warnings not to proceed.

Amman has tightened controls along the 370-km (230 mile) border to try to prevent Jordanian Islamist militants who have joined the rebels from crossing back into Jordan. They are seen as a domestic security threat.

Unlike Syria’s other main neighbours Turkey, which has given rebels a safe haven, and Lebanon, whose border has been breached with impunity by combatants, U.S.-allied Jordan has prevented any free flow of arms or fighters over its frontier.

Momani said the kingdom was increasingly worried about incursions from Syria. “We are worried about cases of infiltration ... and reports that talk about armed groups that are close to the border and the absence of security there.”

Western diplomats say Jordan has been granted hundreds of millions of dollars from Washington in the past two years to beef up its boundaries with Syria. Amman has constructed scores of observation towers with the latest surveillance equipment.

Funny, I don’t hear anyone at all in the Western press crying about collateral damage or civilians being targeted. And these guys could have maybe been seeking asylum. Maybe.

Naaah.

we have no opinions

Is it so wrong to talk about things on the news, in public, with people you know?

Here in one of the deeply red corners of very blue New Jersey, I mentioned the Cliven Bundy rancher vs. the BLM news story to my team on Greed League. And got back blank looks. Went into a bit of detail about the hundreds of federal agents and all the guns and armor they brought to bear. Blank. And how hundreds of not visibly armed citizen protestors chased them away. Silence. Not even a “No, I didn’t catch that one on the news.”, much less a yee-ha or anything like that.

And then I made the remark that future historians might be able to ascertain a moment of change in American politics, when the common usage term for undeveloped land changed from “public property” to “government owned”. And the only reaction I got from one of the guys was a bit of a half smile, half eye roll with a bit of head wobble ... an “I’m embarrassed because your crazy statement is making me so uncomfortable” kind of look. So I shut up.

Oh well. Bad me. Faux pas # 4,320,812.

When I brought up the Brendan Eich/Mozilla story last week, the one reaction I got from the non-Conservative Republican (his description) was “he got what he deserved”. But that fellow does IT for one of the local school systems, so I’m pretty sure his worldview is infected.

Guess I should just go back to talking about beer, boobs, and the Giants. Safer that way.

And yet half the guys on this league wear fishin’ and huntin’ shirts, and a fair number with their “3 percent” hats. About a fifth of them are actual farmers. Guess I’m teamed up with the token liberals or something.

The Left’s Continuing War On Women

Bloomberg: “We will wear them down”

Billionaire former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg announces $50 million campaign against the NRA, focusing on women.

Me? I’d put some real Sam Colt style equality out there and pass laws requiring all women to be armed, however they wanted. Just for their own self-protection.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to spend $50 million this year through his new group Everytown for Gun Safety to counter the influence of the National Rifle Association, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Women, and more particularly moms, will be the key demographic in the outreach to curb gun violence, Everytown for Gun Safety spokeswoman Erika Soto Lamb told CNN.

The news was first reported by the New York Times.

“You’ve got to work at it piece by piece,” Bloomberg told the newspaper. “One mom and another mom. You’ve got to wear them down until they finally say, ‘Enough.’”

Everytown for Gun Safety will serve as an umbrella organization for Bloomberg’s two gun control groups—Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

The effort will target 15 states. And it will focus more on grass-roots organizing than on television ads, Lamb told CNN.

I have no idea what this campaign will be saying, but I’d take every line with a bucket or two of salt. And I’d encourage everyone, male female or otherwise, to at least give shooting a try. Enough to get past that “icky” feeling about guns they might have. And realize that they’re just tools. After that, I’d suggest all different kinds of research if they were interested. Not really into firearms so much, but civil liberties, the history of armed citizens against totalitarian states, the chances of a 103lb woman against a 285lb drugged up rapist, the ability of police and CCTV cameras to actually prevent crime, the way that enormous amounts of crime and violence in our society are ignore by the media, and so forth.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
