‘Whatever happens, we have got. The Maxim Gun, and they have not.”

It occurs to me yet again, as it often does, that this generation or a large part of it, would never have seen the Nazi threat.  Of course, the Brits felt duty bound to honor a treaty they signed with Poland.  Not to mention they tried to undo it ( some did try ) but anyway, the war began in ‘39 with the French reluctantly dragged along for company as well.

So fast forward to where we are now, and read some of the comments ppl are making with regard to the cowardly use of drones and GASP, the fact that Brit RAF people are involved as well, and one gets the feeling these folks would never have fought WW2.  All the angst and all the hand wringing over civilian casualties as if they were intentionally targeted.

Anyway, some Brits are angry that RAF people are flying American drones . WAR CRIME they shout.  Jerks.  As wars have progressed the weapons technology has done so also. That isn’t rocket science.  But to read some of these folks, I get the idea they want us to go out jousting against the Taliban with flags waving and ladies favors tied to the lance.  Nice picture.  For Hollywood maybe.

It was well put a long time ago and wars always go this way.

‘Whatever happens, we have got. The Maxim Gun, and they have not.” And nothing will ever change that in war. Oh right. The left isn’t calling this a war.

RAF’s role in US drone attacks that killed hundreds of Iraqis: MoD admits for first time that Britain helped pilot the aircraft from American bases

Ministry of Defence has admitted for the first time British helped fly drones
Drones were operated remotely from bases thousands of miles away
RAF were involved in as many as three missions a week from 2004
Tory MP said news raised ‘serious questions’ about British role in Iraq war

By Robert Verkaik

RAF pilots took part in America’s notorious drone programme in Iraq in which hundreds of civilians died, The Mail on Sunday has learned.

Heavily armed drones – using deadly missiles to destroy targets – were flying as many as three missions a week from 2004.

They were operated remotely by pilots, often from bases thousands of miles away.

It had been thought the operations in Iraq, which have been condemned by human rights groups as war crimes, were run solely by the US Air Force. Now the Ministry of Defence has admitted for the first time that British personnel were helping to fly the drones from bases in the United States.

In a statement to Parliament, Armed Forces Minister Andrew Robathan was forced to correct a previous account in which he said the RAF flew US drones only in Afghanistan and Libya.

He said: ‘The answer should have said that UK personnel embedded with the US Air Force have only flown US RPAS [Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems] in support of operations in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq.’

The MoD conceded that these embedded missions ran from 2004 to 2009, but a spokesman was unable to provide further details. One intelligence source said British pilots would have worked on drone operations in Basra, using Hellfire missiles to target insurgents fighting UK forces.

the jerk

It’s clear as gin clear water I need to stop reading this shmuck who rants about my country and how we react. Cos every time I read the shit I get angry. Why the hell can’t I just stop?  Must be something bad going on in my head to read this crap. How can anyone be so fucking stupid and hold down his job and make the millions he has over the years?  And he says NY Senator Greg Ball is a madman. Jeesh.

Would some patriot PLEASE, shoot this mother*****r

From Piers (dough face) Morgan

Until tonight, I thought that Alex Jones was the most obnoxious human being I’d ever interviewed.
He was the Texan radio host who screamed at me on air after the Sandy Hook school shooting – a bizarre encounter that got 12 million hits on YouTube.

But then came New York state senator Greg Ball.

After the police captured one of the Boston Marathon bombers alive, he tweeted: ‘So, scumbag No. 2 in custody – who wouldn’t use torture on this punk to save more lives?’

The slight problem being that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is an American citizen, who committed a crime on American soil – so torturing him would be a breach of the U.S. Constitution.

He was issued a green card in 2007 and became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 2012.  And it’s doubtful from the beginning if being an American citizen meant anything more to the turd, except a chance for a step up a ladder. Anyway, considering what the bastard did to his “fellow” citizens, why should being a citizen make any difference?

Fuck You Piers! I hope you get hit by bus but please don’t die too quickly. Dumb ass.

Our gun hating hero continues:

I asked Ball if he stood by his comments, and off he went, like a ranting madman.

‘Politicians are full of crap! I’m a red-blooded American! Dude, you’re talking to a guy that supports the death penalty for cop killers and terrorists!’

He was almost foaming at the mouth.
‘Let me ask YOU a question. If you’d had 30 minutes with Osama Bin Laden before he was shot, what would you do – PLAY CARDS WITH HIM?’

Bin Laden, of course, was not an American citizen, but this minor detail was lost on Senator Ball.

‘Maybe I should say it in a British accent!’ he scored, ‘This man KILLED INNOCENT MEN, WOMEN, CHILDREN.’

He was now smirking manically, like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
‘Can you stop being such a jerk?’ I rejoindered.

‘You get paid for it!’ he shot back, ‘I figured I’d give you a taste of your own medicine!

‘You just don’t like it when you don’t have another BOBBLEHEAD you can beat up and treat like a coward, do you?

‘If I was in a room with Bin Laden and a baseball bat, yes, I would TORTURE HIM!’

‘Very macho,’ I observed.

‘It’s not about being macho! If I wanted to be macho, I would challenge you to an arm wrestle!’

Mr Jones, move aside.

-30-

Jeez ... is this damn fool a total idiot er what?

Wife threatens to get the magazine before I do and shred his column before I can get to read it. She doesn’t care for the color blue I paint the air with when I read this guy.

Norway, some of the aftermath

Booted, checked mail, left one comment and had things to do. Planned to shut down for the rest of wkend and ran into this.

Life goes on of course, but for some it will continue far differently.  After all is said and done I think we forget about the victims and move on.
So I was surprised to see the photos here (see link) and have to feel sorry for the kids so badly hurt and maimed and killed.

It isn’t Boston.

Remember Norway?

Why Do You Think We Called Them Limeys Anyway?

Kiddies won’t eat their veg? Neither will some rough, tough sailors. Scurvy dogs!

Shore Sailor Stricken By Navy’s First Case of Scurvy In 150 Years

KINGS BAY, GA — A sailor on shore duty has contracted scurvy, military health officials said Sunday. It marks the Navy’s first recorded case of the disease since the Civil War.

Last week, Electronics Technician 1st Class Kevin Jurgensen reported to King’s Bay Branch Health Clinic complaining of lethargy, bleeding from his gums, and spots on his skin.

“We initially diagnosed [Jurgensen] with a sexually transmitted disease,” said Captain Jack Gutierrez, the attending physician. “99 times out of a hundred, when a sailor has lesions, unexplained bleeding from mucous membranes, fever—well, you know.”

The actual cause of Jurgensen’s condition turned out to be scurvy, a disease caused by a lack of Vitamin C in the diet.

Jurgensen said the diagnosis was as surprising to him as to the doctors.

“Ever since I moved off base, I stopped eating at the galley,” he said. “Vegetables fucking suck so I don’t eat them. I thought I was drinking enough coffee to make up for it.

Ooh, wouldn’t Popeye be impressed by a hard core attitude like that, sailor-man.

Scurvy was once common in the world’s navies, especially between the 14th and 16th centuries, when ships’ crews were fed only non-perishable foods lacking vitamins and nutrients. The disease became significantly less common after foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus juice, were added to sailors’ diets.

Kings Bay physicians said they were initially startled to discover Jurgensen had the rare disease, until they began asking him about his diet.

“His eating was very similar to how sea voyagers ate in the age of sail,” Gutierrez said. “He told us he ate salted meats, like Slim Jims and shoppette hot dogs, and preserved starches, like cheese crackers and Combos, along with a lot of beer and cheap wine. It’s a diet Blackbeard himself would be proud of.”

Doctors instructed Jurgensen to drink a full can of Monster Energy Drink daily.

“One can of Monster contains 200 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C,” Gutierrez said. “I first told him simply to eat an orange every day, but he turned his face up and pouted. The energy drink seems to be suitable to him.”

Wow, our modern Navy. Manly Men. He pouted. Probably said “yucky poo-poo” as well, and threw his Tommee Tippee cup across the room.

The Navy has already taken steps to prevent the disease from spreading. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has ordered that all sailors be issued limes as mandatory personal protective equipment.

Additionally, since doctors speculate that Jurgensen would have avoided the disease had he drank even one rum- or tequila-based drink with lime in it, the Navy has started a $38 million advertising campaign encouraging sailors to drink more tropical alcoholic mixed drinks.

“We just want sailors to make healthier choices when they go out drinking, like choosing a margarita over a vodka tonic,” Gutierrez explained, “or a Corona with a lime in it instead of a Sam Adams.”

Gee, now there’s a smart plan.

Golly, How Unexpected

Jury: FRAUD Put Obama On The Ballot

Is it too late to declare a national Mulligan?

Officials found guilty in Obama, Clinton ballot petition fraud
A jury in South Bend, Indiana has found that fraud put President Obama and Hillary Clinton on the presidential primary ballot in Indiana in the 2008 election. Two Democratic political operatives were convicted Thursday night in the illegal scheme after only three hours of deliberations in South Bend. They were found guilty on all counts.

Former longtime St. Joseph County Democratic party Chairman Butch Morgan Jr.  was found guilty of felony conspiracy counts to commit petition fraud and forgery, and former county Board of Elections worker Dustin Blythe was found guilty of felony forgery counts and falsely making a petition, after being accused of faking petitions that enabled Obama, then an Illinois Senator, to get on the presidential primary ballot for his first run for the White House.

Morgan was accused of being the mastermind behind the plot.

According to testimony from two former Board of Election officials who pled guilty, Morgan ordered Democratic officials and workers to fake the names and signatures that Obama and Clinton needed to qualify for the presidential race. Blythe, then a Board of Elections employee and Democratic Party volunteer, was accused of forging multiple pages of the Obama petitions.

Gee whiz, my head is spinning. I never ever never thought anything like this could ever possibly happen.

“I think this helped uphold the integrity of the electoral system,” the prosecutor, Stan Levco told reporters.

“Their verdict of guilt is not a verdict against Democrats, but for honest and fair elections,” he said.

Oh horseshit. The Democrats cheat all the friggin time on elections, from graveyard votes to ballot box stuffing to Black Panthers “guarding” the polling places, to ACORN, to fighting tooth and nail against voter ID. If they couldn’t cheat there wouldn’t be a Democrat in office anywhere, hardly. So knock off the PC “we are all guilty together” crap. This is absolutely and indictment against the Dems, and if it had been the Rethuglicans doing this the air raid sirens would be going off everywhere and this would be the ONLY story on every news venue everywhere. So, bite me.

The scheme was hatched in January of 2008, according to affidavits from investigators who cite former Board of Registration worker Lucas Burkett, who told them he was in on the plan at first, but then became uneasy and quit. He waited three years before telling authorities about it, but if revelations about any forgeries were raised during the election, the petitions could have been challenged during the contest. A candidate who did not qualify with enough legitimate signatures at the time, could have been bounced from the ballot.

The case raise questions about whether in 2008, then candidate Obama actually submitted enough legitimate signatures to have legally qualified for the primary ballot.

“I think had they been challenged successfully, he probably would not have been on the ballot,” Levco told Fox News.

Under state law, presidential candidates need to qualify for the primary ballots with 500 signatures from each of the state’s nine congressional districts. Indiana election officials say that in St. Joseph County, which is the 2nd Congressional district, the Obama campaign qualified with 534 signatures; Clinton’s camp had 704.

Prosecutors say that in President Obama’s case, nine of the petition pages were apparently forged. Each petition contains up to 10 names, making a possible total of 90 names, which, if faked, could have brought the Obama total below the legal limit required to qualify. Prosecutors say 13 Clinton petitions were apparently forged, meaning up to 130 possibly fake signatures.  Even if 130 signatures had been challenged, it would have still left Mrs. Clinton with enough signatures to meet the 500 person threshold.

Lucas Burkett. Remember the name. And make it a new synonym for cheating cowardly cocksucker. Thanks for nothing, shitheels.

And I’d say it’s dollars to donuts that the same kind of fraud went on in at least another dozen states, if not more.  Time for a mulligan. Wake up people, the legitimate government of your nation has been stolen from you. But wait, nevermind, it’s OK, because Bush Stole The Election and was Selected Not Elected and Bush Lied So People Died. Even if he didn’t, he wasn’t, and he didn’t. Truth is what our masters in the Ministry of Information say it is today.

At this rate, it will be 2025 before it comes out that, yes, he really was born in Kenya, and isn’t even an American citizen. But by that time we’ll be part of the New Caliphate, so it won’t matter.

UPDATE: retrieved from the memory hole: Team Hillary knew all about it, and far more, back in 2008:

“After studying the procedures and results from all 14 caucus states, interviewing dozens of witnesses, and reviewing hundreds of personal stories, my conclusion is that the Obama campaign willfully and intentionally defrauded the American public by systematically undermining the caucus process,” she said.

In Hawaii, for example, the caucus organizers ran out of ballots, so Obama operatives created more from Post-its and scraps of paper and dumped them into ice cream buckets. “The caucuses ended up with more ballots than participants, a sure sign of voter fraud,” Long said.

In Nevada, Obama supporters upturned a wheelchair-bound woman who wanted to caucus for Hillary, flushed Clinton ballots down the toilets, and told union members they could vote only if their names were on the list of Obama supporters.

In Texas, more than 2,000 Clinton and Edwards supporters filed complaints with the state Democratic Party because of the massive fraud. The party acknowledged that the Obama campaign’s actions “amount to criminal violations” and ordered them to be reported to state and federal law enforcement, but nothing happened.

In caucus after caucus, Obama bused in supporters from out of state, intimidated elderly voters and women, and stole election packets so Hillary supporters couldn’t vote. Thanks to these and other strong-arm tactics, Obama won victories in all but one of the caucuses, even in states such as Maine where Hillary had been leading by double digits in the polls.
...
Obama’s flagrant busing of out-of-state caucus participants from Illinois was so obvious that even Joe Biden — today his running mate, then his rival — pointed it out at the time.

At a campaign stop before the Jan. 3 caucus at the JJ Diner in Des Moines, Biden “said what we were all thinking when he got on stage and said, ‘Hello Iowa!’ and then turned to Barack’s crowd and shouted, ‘and Hello Chicago!’” another precinct captain for Hillary told Long.

So primary candidates Clinton and Biden knew he was cheating even back then. I wonder how Obama managed to buy their silence afterwards?

AN ANTI GUN DUMB AMERICANS RANT BY A LEFT WINGER THAT RUINED MY BREAKFAST

F***!

So I was stupidly reading this left wing paper this morning as I was finishing breakfast.  I take meds for bad gut and I guess it’s well I have to, or else I’d bust a gut in anger.  Why do I let these asswipes get to me this way?  Sorry. No. I can never seem to take things in stride when I see this shit.  I just get pissed off and blow up.

I have heard this guy on the radio and he has been very funny.  It’s only recently I discovered he wrote a column and realized what he was fully. So decided to ignore. Which mostly I have. Until this morning.  Well hell, it was the headline that caught my eye. Of course I should have known better. Nobody to blame but myself.

So since misery loves company so much I thought I should share this crap with my net friends here at bmews. And I think you can if you want to, leave a comment at the site. Not here necessarily.  On the column by a fellow named Mark Steel.

By the way ... here is how the paper would like their readers to see all Americans. I guess even the women. Whatever. Does not make my day.
Just a further example of our unknowing critics being experts and passing judgments on our ways and people. Fuck em all.
Maybe if the damned German foreign office had smarter people back in 1917 working for them instead of loose cannons like Zimmerman, we could have stayed the hell out of WW1 and allowed the Germans to win or draw at the least.

IF EVERYONE HAD A GUN THEY’D BE SAFE. RIGHT?

By Mark Steel

The National Rifle Association in America will be preparing its statement. Each time a nutcase goes berserk with a gun, the NRA insists that this proves everyone should have a gun, so in a couple of days it’ll announce that the only way to respond to events in Boston is for every citizen to have a nail bomb.

In particular, marathon runners, instead of taking a bottle of water and a sponge at each stage of the race, which are useless in the fight against international terrorism, should be handed a grenade and a flamethrower.

The logic of the lobby that last week defeated the attempt to introduce gun controls must be that this is the only way to keep marathons safe. It might be trickier with sprint races, as the starting gun would go off and every runner would instinctively shoot at the poor sod who fired it, which might make race-starting a difficult post to fill. But the right to carry a nail bomb is surely a constitutional right of every US citizen.

People such as the pro-gun campaigners exhibit a special sort of genius. At a time such as last weekend, when you wouldn’t think you could feel anything but sympathy for Americans, they manage to make you think: “Mind you, quite a few of them are bloody creepy.”

For example, on the night that the surviving bomber was captured, you might expect a mood of sombre relief. But CNN showed cheering crowds, and the reporter described the atmosphere as “ elated, excited and jubilant”. Then we saw them chanting “U-S-A, U-S-A”, and some of them let off fireworks.

Maybe the anxiety had disturbed them and caused them to get the capture of a lunatic mixed up with New Year’s Eve.

“We got ’em, we GOT ’EM,” roared a series of men, waving flags into cameras as if they’d won an Olympic medal. And once the story wasn’t so much a human tragedy as a triumph for the USA, I couldn’t help thinking “Oh, you ARE masterful aren’t you, managing with no more resources than the army, SWAT teams, marines, an assortment of helicopters, the FBI and the entire population of Boston to track down a lunatic covered in blood who’d been shot through the neck and was wriggling about in a boat in someone’s garden. I wonder who you’ll meet in the SECOND round of the World Hide and Seek championships.”

The strangest part is that this excitement doesn’t usually happen on the occasions that a madman in America gets captured after going on the rampage in a school or shopping centre with the machine-guns he’s constitutionally entitled to carry. For example, there were no joyous celebrations when James Holmes was captured after blasting 12 people dead in a cinema in Denver. I suppose that, unlike in Boston, the people of Denver just aren’t party-going types.

Or it could be that there’s a rule that the capture of a dangerous criminal is only a victory for America if the criminal can be portrayed as not American. Because if you’re going to go on a killing spree in America, you should at least have the decency to be American. There must be some people saying: “It’s a disgrace. These Chechen lunatics are coming over here taking our lunatics’ jobs.”

The above was all there was in the hard copy edition.
Below is what was added to the on line version.

When it was known the bombers were nice and foreign, the fun could start. Bob Beckel, a reporter on Fox News, informed viewers this was the time to “cut off Muslim students from coming into the country”. The New America Foundation in Washington, which influences the government, declared that the problem was whether Muslims see themselves as “Americans first or Muslims first”. New York Senator Steve King was one of many who concluded: “We must increase surveillance amongst Muslims.”

But Adam Lanza, who went nuts in December with a gun in a school in Connecticut, was said to be from a “good Christian family”. So, at some point presumably, the government will be told that Christians have to decide whether they’re “Americans first or Christians first”. Maybe it will be acceptable if they’re from a bad Christian family, but good Christians are clearly lethal.

And James Holmes was a committed Presbyterian. So Fox News will demand that Protestants aren’t allowed into America as students. Anyone working too hard will be monitored as a potential terrorist, Senator Steve King will demand increased surveillance among people who sing along to Songs of Praise, and reporters will scream that the country’s become so soft that it lets prisoners at Guantanamo Bay wear orange, which is exactly what they want, the Protestant crackpots. “I suppose we’ll give them all a flute next,” they’ll gasp.

There is another America, in which thousands of Boston people gave blood to help victims of the bomb, and tens of thousands have already registered for next year’s marathon. But these acts can end up submerged, beneath the more important need to let off fireworks and yell about Muslims.

And if it turns out that these particular Muslims have responded to the war in Chechnya by concluding that if armies come into your area with bombs then the only sensible way to behave is to make sure you’ve got bombs of your own, they ought to be offered a free year’s membership to the National Rifle Association.

Drew’s response:
(feel free to disagree in whole or in part, or to add the bits that I’ve missed. Plenty of room in the comments section, so have at it.)

Splendid sarcasm, I should think. Second round of Hide and Seek. Marvelous.

What? No, he’s serious? Well then, that’s whores of a different “colour” altogether.

There are now plenty of articles around the Right Wing blogosphere and what little Right Wing press we have (aka the VRWC), including the Day By Day comic right here on the right sidebar that are decrying the whole approach to the Boston bombing. Easy to find the video, shot by some scared shitless homeowner peeking out his window, of the Tsarnaev brothers standing right across the street from him, in the headlights of their stolen SUV, shooting at the cops. And the response to that video is generally “Where was your gun? If you had the nerve to stand there and take pictures, why the hell didn’t you shoot these bastards yourself?” Plenty more have written how the swarm of LEOs rampaging across the town, kicking in doors and dragging people from their homes, searching houses without a warrant when NO state of martial law had been declared ... was the worst constitutional abuse seen in generations. And all to naught: almost the minute that the fuzz declared an “all clear” that homeowner went outside all by himself and found the kid hiding in his boat. Given that info, hundreds of cops swarmed the guy’s yard, and opened fire on the unarmed suspect - which is tantamount to attempted murder, plain and simple, even if Dzokhar had been shooting at them earlier. Plenty of words written about that abuse of power too. Plenty more about the seeming cowardice of the “shelter in place” edict. The entire older part of the nation, raised on the historic meme of “Boston = freedom fighters” woke to find out that those folks are just as cowed, and just as dependent, on Big Bother as any other urban group.

So this Mark Steel of yours is not alone in noting that the post-capture celebration seemed a bit out of place. But to be fair, the entire city of Denver was not put into lockdown and turned into a war zone by an entire ARMY of police and “guys in military uniforms” (my quotes, not Steel’s) whether those were Guardsmen, or Special Ops cops or feds or whatever. “All the weapons of war” which our own President had declared just a week or two before that “don’t belong on our streets” were visible, in use by the powers of government. Right down to the “up armored” Humvees with the .50 BMGs mounted on the roofs. Golly, why, was there some need to perhaps shoot down airliners? Even when the airspace above Boston was shut down?? So if the folks of Boston needed to vent their relief, let them. It was only slightly embarrassing to the rest of us, but the rest of us didn’t have bullets shooting through our homes all day long as they did. So in the balance, it’s OK.

I’m not sure if Steel is saying this between the lines, but if not I will say it for him: the people of Boston were more terrorized by the government than they were by these two man-child terrorists.

As to the “dirty wog immigrant camel-fucker muslims” reaction, our own media and any number of our elected reps went apeshit pointing fingers over those other shootings; don’t you know it was the Tea Party, or Sarah Palin, or “some white guy” aligned with some “far right” group that was responsible for the last 3, 4, 5 of these events? That was the MSM message. But an underlying truth is that our borders are not secure and the government is going out of their way to keep them that way. And nobody can understand State Dept’s view on student visas or the numbskull immigration policies that we have. So there will be public outrage over that, and the Boston event was another channel for it.

When it was found out that some of those previous mass shooters were genuine crazy people, a huge debate about better screening for the mentally ill ensued, but was almost lost in the mist of the big anti-gun push of our Tyrant In Chief and his “we are above the law” minions. And because those provisions were wrapped up in a BS bill to strip normal Americans of more rights, they too went down to defeat in our Legislature.

Furthermore, regardless of what the Fellating PC Pansies In Power (FPCPIP)™ try daily to make us believe, the VAST majority of thinking Americans understand that the muslim world is at war with us. That effectively makes us at war with them, government denials notwithstanding. We know that Fort Hood was terrorism. And while Jesus said “love your enemy” I don’t think he meant it to apply when they were actually attacking you. So yeah, we hate those who hate us, especially when we find out that extraordinary largess has been freely granted to some of them with no avail. We gave them solace, we gave them bread, we gave them shelter, we covered them with love and acceptance. And they answered that with random mass murder. Well fuck that, in spades. The carrot has failed, bring out the stick.

As a final By The Way, the Second Amendment says “arms”. It does NOT say “guns”. “All the fearsome tools of the soldier” (or words to that effect) is what “arms” means. And if that includes mines or bombs, so be it. (compare a pressure cooker IED to a military Claymore anti-personnel mine; the Claymore is much more effective). Does this mean I can now renew my subscription to American Rifleman and send Steel the bill?

the left has reorganised and is every day, circumventing democracy

Not certain who is copying whom but there seems to be a race on.  So far the UK is ahead of the USA where many are armed. Not too funny that.
But it is true and I have been saying it for a long time.  The left is in control, the current PM is hardly that with the co-coalition govt. in place. And I am not sure he’d make that big a difference anyway.

Quentin Letts covers politics, his beats are two and he is always brilliant at them. He is a drama critic and also covers Parliament. Don’t know how he manages all the writing he does daily.
There have times over the years that I may not agree , like when he gets critical of USA foreign policy or when he was critical of Bush as everyone here seems to be, even then, I could not help but admire the man. And his skill as a wordsmith.

Take a look.

How the Left’s grip on Britain is tightening, with ever more control over key public bodies since David Cameron came to power

By Quentin Letts

Voters in the Yorkshire seaside town of Redcar may have felt a stab of deja vu in recent days. Into their lives once more there barged a tall, shock-headed lawyer with a maddening, nanny-knows-best manner.

She announced that there was no need for the police to monitor minor drugs use because it simply ‘wasted their time’ and was, anyhow, of piffling concern to the public. Redcar residents surely looked at this carrot-topped autocrat, Vera Baird (6ft plus Vera is hard to miss), and thought: ‘Hey, we got rid of her in 2010.’ So they did. They booted her out as their MP with gusto.

image

Yet here was barrister Baird back in the political pulpit, unashamedly spouting her fashionable theories. How come? Well, Miss Baird, after two years in the wilderness, managed to get herself adopted as Labour’s Northumbria candidate in the new elections for police and crime commissioner.

There we could probably leave the bullet-proof Baird were it not for the fact that her political resurrection reflects a wider, more troubling trend — the stealthy acquisition of power by the Left in areas previously unpolluted by party politics.

From the outer spheres of Whitehall to the BBC, from quangoland to the charities (the ‘third sector’ as they now call themselves with that echo of ‘fifth column’), Left-wing intellectuals are on the march.

Police commissioners have at least been elected, albeit on low turnouts. But others are unelected placemen and women who suck money from the state. They cost us money not just with their often inflated public salaries, expenses and pensions, but also in their promotion of Left-wing ideologies and their determination to sabotage the Coalition’s efforts to reform the British economy by reducing the size and influence of the state.

Reds under the bed? If only that was the only place. These people are everywhere. In fact, it would not be going too far to say that after nearly three years of a Tory-led Government, it is still the Left that controls the real levers of power in Britain.

BBC actors and canons of the Church of England do not hesitate to espouse public, partisan views. Small beer? Yes. But once that slide from objectivity in supposedly revered figures has happened, we become less offended by more serious bias.

And so we shrug at political shenanigans on hospital trusts, in state education governance, in academic think tanks, in once impeccably apolitical animal welfare charities. The RSPCA, now run by a Liberal Democrat zealot, has pursued an obviously political prosecution against a hunt in David Cameron’s constituency.

Great institutions seem to have lost sight of impartial public service and have become infected by politicised turf wars and blame-evasion.

This, I am afraid, is the stuff of serious cultural collapse. From time to time a scurvy journalist (soon, of course, to be regulated by a new organ of this mottled state) dares to point this out. We are then told that there is ‘nothing untoward’ and that ‘no political influence’ has occurred.

But this refusal to question institutional bias may remind us of Rene the café owner in TV’s ’Allo ’Allo. When caught by his wife in the arms of another woman, Rene would call his spouse ‘you stupid woman’ and insist he was innocent. Officialdom tries to pull the same trick.

When card-carrying Labourite Dame Suzi Leather chaired the Charity Commission, we were assured that her stewardship was non-political. The Charity Commission, pre-Leather, had been a dusty, faultlessly non-controversial body. Under Ed Balls admirer Dame Suzi, it became entangled in politics as it tried to destroy independent schools.

Recent figures showed that more Labour supporters are working for public bodies under David Cameron than did so under the last Labour government. Mr Cameron loves to be thought Centrist, moderate, not a tribal fellow. The Left sees this and takes him for a fool.

The Prime Minister is foregoing control of organisations which are undermining his Government.

Labour-dominated quangos, health trusts and advisory bodies are on a war footing.

You only had to see the hysterically overdone claims about social hardship whipped up against Iain Duncan Smith from the likes of the Child Poverty Action Group, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the TUC.

Or look at the state-paid Leftists — such as self-regarding university dons — who constantly carp about Education Secretary Michael Gove’s brave reforms of state schools.

Critics of Mr Duncan Smith included Save the Children and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Innocents will hear the names of these charities and suppose they are devoted solely to the alleviation of suffering. Think again.

Save the Children is run by Justin Forsyth, Gordon Brown’s ex-strategy chief. He is paid £162,000 a year and previously worked for Tony Blair. The NSPCC, meanwhile, has hired Peter Watt as director of child protection, advice and awareness. He used to be the Labour Party’s general secretary.

Fair-minded readers will say ‘well, it’s the Conservatives’ fault for not applying for the jobs’. But it’s not that simple. For public duty has become a career and it appeals more to big-state tax-and-spend types than free-market-supporting individualists.

Gordon Brown had a team whose responsibility was to plan appointments to public bodies and charities, carefully building a kind of government-in-exile.

Fraser Nelson, editor of The Spectator, explains: ‘These charities are not the kindly tin-rattlers they were. In 2008, Gordon Brown changed the rules so charities could join political campaigns. It was a masterstroke.

‘The charities sharpened their claws by hiring former Labour apparatchiks. Now, Britain’s charities are nurturing a talented and efficient anti-Tory alliance.’

In a recent paper published by the Institute of Economic Affairs, academic Christopher Snowdon wrote: ‘In the past 15 years, state funding of charities in Britain has increased significantly, while restrictions on political lobbying by charities have been relaxed.’

Some of these charities lobbied for causes that don’t enjoy widespread public support, such as bigger government, higher taxes and the creation of new agencies to oversee and enforce new laws.

David Cameron, devoted to the middle ground, will never reverse this. Nowhere has this been more apparent than in his arts policy which has appeased meretricious non-talents from the Left.

Arts minister Ed Vaizey declares vacuously that his favourite artist is Tracey Emin, even though she could barely draw a bath.

Subsidised British art has been left in the control of a cabal of dated modernists headed by Sir Nicholas Serota, a man who is about as Tory as Fidel Castro.

Nothing is more obstinate than a defeated, discredited Left which has reorganised and is, every day, circumventing democracy and outsmarting a naïve Prime Minister who wishes too much to be liked.

There Are None So Blind As Those Who Will Not See

Man Shouts Allah Akbar and Tries to Cut Rabbi’s Throat: Police Say Motive Unclear

Crivens, do I even need to grab quotes and post the link? Another day’s circle on the endless Merry Go Round Of Stupid.

PARIS — An escapee from a psychiatric institution slashed a rabbi and his son with a box-cutter on Tuesday, prompting witnesses to tackle and subdue the attacker after a chase through a Paris synagogue, officials said.

The rabbi, who is in his late 40s, was recovering from surgery for a neck injury and his 18-year-old son sustained lesser injuries in the attack north of a touristic shopping area near Paris’ gilded Opera Garnier, according to police and judicial officials and Richard Prasquier, who heads CRIF, France’s largest umbrella organization of Jewish groups.

The assailant was of Iranian origin, and an official investigation was underway to determine a possible motive, Prasquier said.

Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office, said the two victims had been wearing Jewish skullcaps, and the attacker was detained after a chase through the synagogue. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide, said in a statement that the assailant screamed “Allah-u-Akbar” — or “God is great” — during the attack.

PARIS.

Fwance.

Oh well, that explains everything.

Not What I Call Assimilation

Train Bomber: I Am Above The Law, I Am Muslim

One of two men accused in an alleged al Qaeda-backed plan to derail a passenger train in Canada appeared in court on Wednesday and disputed the authority of Canadian law to judge him, saying the criminal code was not a holy book.

Chiheb Esseghaier, a Tunisian-born doctoral student, faces charges that include conspiracy to murder and working with a terrorist group.

He and another suspect, Raed Jaser, are charged with plotting to derail a passenger train, and U.S. security sources say they sought to attack at a bridge near the U.S.-Canada border.

In a brief hearing where he was ordered back into custody, Esseghaier, 30, said the allegations against him are based on laws that are unreliable because they are not the work of God.

“All of these conclusions was taken out based on (the) criminal code,” he told a Toronto court. “The criminal code is not (a) holy book.”

He added: “Only the Creator is perfect.”

Authorities said there is no connection to the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing in which three people were killed and 264 injured.

But U.S. officials say investigators are trying to establish if the two suspects were part of a wider network with associates in the United States, especially in New York.

Canadian authorities have said they linked Esseghaier and Jaser to al Qaeda factions in Iran. However, they said there was no indication their plans, which police described as the first known al Qaeda-backed plot on Canadian soil, were state-sponsored. Tehran has vehemently rejected any ties to the suspects.

That’s nice.

How about Canada meets him halfway? Try him by Canadian law, then carry out the sentence according to Shar’ia law. Stoning or beheading would work.

Even The Cops

Saw this on Fox today, even though the story is a couple weeks old. Another armed minority type in serious need of anger management and patience classes. OTOH, IMHO nobody in their right mind should ever go near an urban Micky D’s.

Georgia detective allegedly pulls gun in McDonald’s drive-thru

image
“allegedly” because that’s him in the picture right there

A metro Atlanta police sergeant accused of pulling a gun on a customer in a McDonalds drive-thru has been arrested.

Forsyth County sheriff’s spokesman Courtney Spriggs Wednesday said DeKalb County police Sgt. Scott Biumi has been charged with aggravated assault after authorities say he pointed a gun at a man during an argument on April 9.

Sheriff’s officials say surveillance footage from inside the restaurant shows the 48-year-old sergeant step between the man’s car and the drive-thru window. Authorities say he pointed the weapon into the car as he leaned into the driver’s side window.

Authorities say the April 9 incident was caught on surveillance video, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported.

The station identified the alleged victim as 18-year-old Ryan Mash.

“I’m just like, ‘I don’t want to die.  I’m sorry, sir.  I didn’t mean for any of this to happen,’” Mash recalled.

Mash told MyFoxAtlanta.com that he was waiting for his food, and he said he told Biumi that’s the only reason he was still sitting in the line.

My guess is that the McNugget Ho was taking too long with the car ahead of him in line.

Hey Lautenberg Are You Listening?

Not Enough Explosive Power

Tamerlan bought two “Lock and Load” reloadable mortar kits containing 24 shells each on the evening of Feb. 6, said April Walton, the manager of Phantom Fireworks in Seabrook. He paid $200 cash but scanned his driver’s license into the company’s computer system as required by store policy.

“We have a bank of computers at the front end where we greet everyone and hand out safety flyers,” she said. “He was just an average customer. ... He signed in, walked around and purchased the kits with cash.”

Walton wasn’t in the store at the time but said the employee who handled the sale described it as a routine transaction.

The amount of gunpowder that could be harvested from the kits — less than a pound and a half — would not have been enough to detonate the Boston bombs, company Vice President William Weimer said, although it’s possible some of that powder may have been used.

The absence of colored smoke in the Boston explosions and other special effects powders mixed in with the fireworks’ blast powder suggests the bombers sought and used an alternate fuel source, he said.

“My suspicion is they experimented with this, decided they couldn’t get enough powder out of them and went to look for another fuel,” Weimer said.

Mortar style fireworks usually use black powder as the propellent to fire the effects charges up into the air.

Pity the dummies didn’t just find a reloading store. A pound of black powder only costs $15.99.

And The Story Shifts Some More

No Gun On The Boat

So how was Boston Bomber part of a  shootout  “standoff” moments before capture?

Will tomorrow’s story be that he had 3 M16s at the time?

Now watch the conspiracy apes go nuts. Again. More so.

Suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was unarmed when he took shelter in dry-docked boat and surrendered to authorities, investigators said.

No gun was found in the boat where cops busted Tsarnaev, 19, following a massive manhunt that virtually shut down all of Boston on Friday.

Tsarnaev had been hiding in a boat stored in the backyard of a Watertown, Mass., home. Officers fired a hail of bullets toward the boat before Tsarnaev complied with an FBI negotiator and gave up.

But investigators now say that no firearm was found in the craft.

-- No firearm was found in the boat where the surviving Boston Marathon attack suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was found, several sources from different agencies familiar with the investigation said Thursday. Authorities had said in a criminal complaint there was a standoff between the boat’s occupant and police involving gunfire.

Just like Newtown, every day the story changes. Eventually all the details will come out. Or those that fit the official story.

Also - was Tamerlan a drug dealer? That would tie him closer to those three guys killed 9/11/11, at least one of whom he knew. They were also purported drug dealers. Didn’t I read somewhere that their bodies were found covered in pot?

Investigators are looking into the possibility Tamerlan Tsarnaev—who was married with a young daughter, whom he frequently cared for while his wife worked as a home health aide—may have helped finance the bomb plot through illegal drug sales, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

curiouser and curiouserer by the day.
