Vicious Disease Raises New Health Concerns For Gays

Flesh Eating MRSA Running Wild In Gay Community

This is really some nasty shiz folks. One of the worst strains of MRSA, a variant known as USA300, has hit the urban gay zones all over the country. Gay men are 13 times more likely to catch it than the rest of the population. In San Francisco health officials think that more than 1 in 600 people in the city’s gayest neighborhood already have the disease. That’s on the edge of a for-real CDC epidemic.

It is suspected that the virus is sexually transmitted.

A strain called USA300 has been a leading cause of MRSA infection in this decade, and an exceptionally drug-resistant variant of it is now on the loose, researchers say.

The study estimated that 1 in 588 residents living within the Castro neighborhood 94114 ZIP code area is infected with that variant, which is resistant to six types of commonly used antibiotics. The risk of contracting this difficult-to-treat bug is 13 times greater for gay men than for the rest of the city’s population, researchers found.

“We probably had it here first, and now it is spreading elsewhere,” said Binh An Diep, a researcher at San Francisco General Hospital and lead author of the report. “This is a national problem, and San Francisco is at the epicenter.”

The germ typically causes boils and other skin and soft-tissue infections and, despite its resistance to some drugs, is still treatable by surgical drainage and several classes of antibiotics. What is unusual in this case is the high percentage of infections - up to 40 percent - occurring in the buttocks and genitalia.

Although researchers have stopped short of declaring this form of staph a sexually transmitted disease, the infections are found where skin-to-skin contact occurs during sexual activity.

Most of the infections are limited to the skin surface, but the bacteria can invade deeper tissues or disseminate through the bloodstream. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, various forms of MRSA are causing 95,000 of these more costly and potentially life-threatening infections - and 19,000 deaths - annually in the United States.

Read about it at FoxNews
Read about at the NYT
Read about it at SF Gate
Read about it at Med Page

It has already been proven to be resistant to many antibiotics.

As if it wasn’t hard enough for these folks, now they’ve got this to deal with. Stay healthy people, and Wrap That Rascaltm, or else!!

South Carolinia is in the Sights

According to the new Rasmussen poll, Fred is is a statistical dead heat with Romney and Huck.

Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support.

Compensated over ‘race’ arrest

By Paul Stokes

Last Updated: 2:07am GMT 15/01/2008

A former presenter of One Man and His Dog has won £2,000 in compensation after being wrongly arrested on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred.

Robin Page fought a five-year, one-man campaign to clear his name over remarks he made at a pro-hunting rally which led to him being held in a police cell.

Using the Data Protection Act, he obtained official documents which showed that there had been no grounds for prosecution before Gloucestershire Constabulary agreed the settlement for his wrongful detention.

“I believe I have scored a significant victory over the ludicrous and sinister politically-correct ‘hate crime’ culture that is currently doing so much to prevent free speech in this country,” he said.

Mr Page, 64, a farmer, conservationist, columnist for The Daily Telegraph, and the chairman of the Countryside Restoration Trust, became the focus of police attention after his comments at a country fair in September 2002.

He claims that in order to gain the attention of listeners at the gathering in Frampton-upon-Severn, Glos, he started in a “light-hearted fashion”.
His opening remark was: “If you are a black, vegetarian, Muslim, asylum-seeking, one-legged lesbian lorry driver, I want the same rights as you.”

You know you’re getting old when …

You miss your own darn blogaversary!!

BMEWS Turns 4

January 12, 2004 was the very first post. Two ex-Airforce guys, Allan and Vilmar, ran the show. Within 6 minutes they had identified Dennis Kucinich as their very first moonbat, and barely six hours later had realized Ex-Black Panther Bobby Brown was another one. It didn’t take very long to pass the 100 posts mark, then the 500th, the 1000th, and so on. These days we don’t even count them.

A lot of things have changed over the years. Both Allan and Vilmar are gone, one by fate and one by choice. Many, many readers have also left us. BMEWS had a rough period for a while, and things got rather testy, which led to a small handful of commentors being banned. I pray that the ban switch will never be needed again, but it’s still there, bright and shiney like a chrome plated axe just waiting to fall.

We also have hundreds and hundreds of new members, including Gerry Atric and Pius Aeneas who just joined today. Welcome aboard all, and I hope I can keep your interest.

As the latest “owner” and I’ve been thinking about making some changes. But I’ll think on them real hard before doing anything rash. We have something like tradition going on here, and I don’t want to mess with that.

So happy blogaversary to us, and I’ll do my best to keep things interesting and enjoyable here. The world is a crazy place and there is no shortage of moonbattery that needs exposing and stomping on.

A little update: After reading Infinity’s comment, following the link, and reading the code for that archived page, I located this masthead graphic. It doesn’t show up on the archived page because the directory structure has changed over the years, and the page code is looking in the wrong place for it. Or the web.archive place may trim the graphics to save space; I would. Still, this may be the original masthead. It’s the same filename and Allan never threw anything away. I can’t say, it was before my time.

I have just returned home from my session at the kangaroo court, called the Alberta human rights commission. Here is my opening statement that I delivered at the interrogation. I will post more details about the interrogation soon.
Alberta Human Rights Commission Interrogation Opening remarks by Ezra Levant, January 11, 2008 – Calgary

My name is Ezra Levant. Before this government interrogation begins, I will make a statement.
When the Western Standard magazine printed the Danish cartoons of Mohammed two years ago, I was the publisher. It was the proudest moment of my public life. I would do it again today. In fact, I did do it again today. Though the Western Standard, sadly, no longer publishes a print edition, I posted the cartoons this morning on my website, ezralevant.com.

I am here at this government interrogation under protest. It is my position that the government has no legal or moral authority to interrogate me or anyone else for publishing these words and pictures. That is a violation of my ancient and inalienable freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and in this case, religious freedom and the separation of mosque and state. It is especially perverted that a bureaucracy calling itself the Alberta human rights commission would be the government agency violating my human rights. So I will now call those bureaucrats “the commission” or “the hrc”, since to call the commission a “human rights commission” is to destroy the meaning of those words.

I believe that this commission has no proper authority over me. The commission was meant as a low-level, quasi-judicial body to arbitrate squabbles about housing, employment and other matters, where a complainant felt that their race or sex was the reason they were discriminated against. The commission was meant to deal with deeds, not words or ideas. Now the commission, which is funded by a secular government, from the pockets of taxpayers of all backgrounds, is taking it upon itself to be an enforcer of the views of radical Islam. So much for the separation of mosque and state.

There are a bunch of videos from this fellow here.  Read and View and WONDER.  What’s up with Canada?  Or is it also becoming Canadastan.

Have a heart, mate

All Your Organs Are Belong To Us

UK’s Gordon Brown pushes plan to take organs from dead patients without their consent

We used to think that nothing was certain other than death and taxes. But at least once you’d died the government would leave you alone. British PM has plans to change that.

Seeking to help thousands waiting life-saving transplants, British PM Gordon Brown has signalled his support for acquiring organs from the dead without prior explicit consent, according to a Sky News report.

The policy, referred to as “presumed consent” would mean that, unless people opted out of the donor register or family members objected, hospitals would be allowed to take their organs.

In Britain we have 14.9 million people on the organ donor register - which is around 24 per cent of the population. In terms of actual donors (not just people willing to give, but those whose organs are actually used) we have a rate of about 13 donors per million in our population. This compares with about 22 per million in France, 25 per million in America and around 35 per million in Spain - the best in the world.

That is why I want to start a debate in this country about whether we should take steps to move towards a new system designed to enable far more of us to benefit from transplant surgery - one that better reflects survey findings that around 90 per cent of us are in favour of organ donation.

...
But a system of this kind seems to have the potential to close the aching gap between the potential benefits of transplant surgery and the limits imposed by our current system of consent. A serious debate - involving the public most of all, but also bringing in professional views and those of religious leaders - is long overdue. To facilitate it, Alan Johnson and I have asked the Organ Donation Taskforce to begin consulting on the question of a move to a different consent system.

It is a sensitive issue, and one on which many different points of view need to be heard. I want to start a genuine debate, and I recognise that there will be legitimate concerns that need to be heard. Any system that moved towards a new kind of consent needs careful safeguards, and we should not move in advance of a real and thoughtful public debate involving faith communities, patients and families.

“Oy, well ‘e didn’t say we couldn’t ‘ave ‘em gov’na. Course he was a might bit dead at the time.

The Government will launch an overhaul of the system next week, which will put pressure on doctors and nurses to identify more “potential organ donors” from dying patients. Hospitals will be rated for the number of deceased patients they “convert” into donors and doctors will be expected to identify potential donors earlier and alert donor co-ordinators as patients approach death.

‘ere, he looks dead to me! Got the snips?
I’m not dead.
Yes you are.
I am NOT.
Are so.
Am not!
image

No, this really isn’t something out of Monty Python. This is real. Of course Mr. Brown says he wants to get a debate started. Well, causing an uproar like this sure will do the job!
I expect it to pass. I expect it to become law: that unless you tell them specifically otherwise, the state gets whatever bits of you they want once you kick it. Think of it as just another inheritance tax.

Holy smokes.

A Kiss On The Hand May be Very Sentimental, but Lawyers Are a Guys Best Friend

Class Action Lawsuit Against De Beers: $295,000,000 Settlement

DeBeers diamond cartel agrees to $295 million settlement in anti-trust price-fixing class action lawsuit. If you bought a diamond from a retailer it actually came through De Beers. If you bought one between January 1, 1994 and March 31, 2006, you are eligible for a refund if you sign up for the settlement. Maximum payout will be about $640.

I know I’m eligible. I think I’ll sign up.  The diamond cartel has been artificially inflating prices for over a century.

Diamonds are said to be a girl’s best friend. Now, that friend is potentially worth a substantial amount of money back as a result of a multimillion-dollar settlement with diamond behemoth De Beers.

The company that controls a huge share of the rough diamond market has agreed to pay nearly $300 million in a price-fixing dispute.

Customers who bought finished diamonds might be able to get hundreds of dollars back.

De Beers, one of the largest diamond suppliers in the world, has agreed to give Americans money back as a result from a class action lawsuit against the company alleging antitrust violations.

John Maher, the plaintiffs’ attorney, said the diamond leader violated the law.

“They controlled and monopolized the sale of rough diamonds and as a result merchants paid more than they should have for those stones,” he said.

De Beers has not admitted to doing anything wrong in the $295 million settlement. An earmark of $135.4 million has been made for consumers who file a claim.

According to the claims administrator, a consumer who purchased a $2,000 engagement ring would be entitled to a maximum of $640 back.

Here are some facts:

Several class-action lawsuits were filed asking for money damages on behalf of diamond purchasers. The lawsuits also asked that the defendants stop certain business conduct. The lawsuits claim that the largest suppliers of diamonds in the world—De Beers S.A. and its associated companies—violated antitrust, unfair competition, and consumer-protection laws by monopolizing diamond supplies, conspiring to fix, raise, and control diamond prices, and disseminating false and misleading advertising. De Beers and the other companies deny they violated the law or did anything wrong. They also say that because they do not do business in the United States, the courts in the United States do not have authority over them.

The courts where the lawsuits were filed have not made any determinations regarding whether the Defendants have done anything wrong. If the lawsuits are settled, the Court will not rule on any of Plaintiffs’ claims or on Defendants’ defenses to those claims, and the lawsuits will be dismissed. This means the Class Members may not sue any Defendant ever again about any past, present or future claims based on or related to the conduct covered by the lawsuits.

So what we have here is a zillion dollar cartel throwing a few pennies to the crowd to make this problem go away. Yeah, $300 million really is just chump change to De Beers.

Fred Gets Human Events Endorsment

HUMAN EVENTS Endorses Fred Thompson

The 2008 presidential election is the most unusual and most important in many years. It’s been more than five decades since such a race didn’t feature an incumbent President or Vice President. Since World War II, America has not had a presidential election at a time when the stakes were higher. Conservatives have to win this election, and to do so, we have to identify a candidate around whom we all can rally.

Fundamental Beliefs

We begin by recalling the profound words of Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Conference Feb. 15, 1975: “A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.” We believed that then, and we believe it now. The issue for us—and for the conservative community—boils down to which of the candidates is most representative of the fundamental conservative principles we believe in. The answer is Fred Thompson.

To reach that conclusion, we looked closely at the former Tennessee senator and his opponents to judge whether they measure up to conservative standards. Some come close, and others clearly do not.

FRED!

O Canada!

It takes 3 lefts to make a right, but in Canada it looks like 2 wrongs will also make a right.

Canadian druggie has bad trip, sues dealer, wins

big_canada_flag

A Saskatchewan woman who overdosed on crystal methamphetamine has successfully won a precedent-setting civil lawsuit against the drug dealer who sold her the highly addictive drug.

Sandra Bergen, 23, and her family launched a lawsuit against Clinton Davey in 2005 after she suffered a heart attack in Biggar, Sask. that left her in a coma for 11 days.

She has since developed a heart condition that leaves her constantly fatigued and limits her chances of ever having children.

In her statement of claim, Bergen said Davey knew the drug was highly addictive and the sale of the drug was “for the purpose of making money but was also for the purpose of intentionally inflicting physical and mental suffering on Sandra.”

Holy Hockey Pucks. Yeah, that’s right. Your pusher sold you the dope specifically to make you suffer.  Cheese Louise, what a hoser!

Bergen is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 for medical costs and legal fees. A hearing to determine how much she will be awarded in damages is scheduled for a later date.
...
“It’s bigger than me and it’s bigger than this guy,” she said. “I think it’s a different way to hit drug dealers financially and that’s where it will really hurt them.”

Riiiight. I get it. It’s almost like you’re doing this for The Chiiildrentm. You’re going to fix those baddy drug dealers for their own good!!

I wonder if she would have had a case if the meth had been any good? I also wonder why the dealer didn’t sue her back with the claim that he gave her bad drugs to get her off them. He could have pleaded “tough love”, since the woman is now clean and sober thanks entirely to his efforts.

I can’t wait to see how this new take on the Lemon Laws will go over up there. I can see every little stoner running to the law with “This dope’s no good, eh? I wanna sue!”

More proof of global worming!

It’s snowing in Baghdad!

So much for MMGW. Gee, I wonder if AlGore gave a talk there yesterday?

BAGHDAD (AP) — After weathering nearly five years of war, Baghdad residents thought they’d pretty much seen it all. But Friday morning, as muezzins were calling the faithful to prayer, the people here awoke to something certifiably new.

For the first time in memory, snow fell across Baghdad.

Although the white flakes quickly dissolved into gray puddles, they brought an emotion rarely expressed in this desert capital snarled by army checkpoints, divided by concrete walls and ravaged by sectarian killings — delight.

“For the first time in my life I saw a snow-rain like this falling in Baghdad,” said Mohammed Abdul-Hussein, a 63-year-old retiree from the New Baghdad area.

“When I was young, I heard from my father that such rain had fallen in the early ‘40s on the outskirts of northern Baghdad,” Abdul-Hussein said, referring to snow as a type of rain. “But snow falling in Baghdad in such a magnificent scene was beyond my imagination.”

“Snow has fallen in Baghdad for the first time in about a century as a result of two air flows meeting,” said a statement by the meteorology department.

“The first one was cold and dry and the second one was warm and humid. They met above Iraq.”

The director of the meteorology department, Dawood Shakir, told AFP that climate change was possibly to blame for the unusual event.

Oh well, you just knew somebody would have to say it. But they didn’t dare say “global warming”.

Talib Haider, a 19-year-old college student, said “a friend of mine called me at 8 a.m. to wake me up and tell me that the sky is raining snow.”

“I rushed quickly to the balcony to see a very beautiful scene,” he said. “I tried to film it with my cell phone camera. This scene has really brought me joy. I called my other friends and the morning turned to be a very happy one in my life.”

Quick, somebody ask the mullahs if making snowmen is halal or haram!! LOL
