What a Week
I took last week off from work, mostly to hunt (Virginia’s whitetail rifle season was the week of Thanksgiving and last week), but also to get some things done around the house. My thought was that I could spend some time sprucing up the site here, catching up on some posts I have queed up and make some progress on the “bark store”, but that never happened. I always end up planning more than I can accomplish.
I took my son out one day and we had a great time together. We got out to the pop-up blind I had set up the week before and found it lying on the ground in a heap. It looked like a bear had taken an interest in it and decided to test its carrying capacity. It failed. but, we were able to get it back up before sun-up and had a great time watching the forest wake up. We didn’t see any deer, and he got cold and restless after a couple of hours, so we paked it in and headed to breakfast in town. I hunted Friday and Saturday as well, but with no results. The bear did make one more visit on Friday night because I had to repeat the process of setting it back up on Saturday morning. This time, he broke a pole and tore up one of the guy lines. Too bad I never got to see him up close.
I ended the week in a grand way. My wife and I have been taking a class studying Jimmy Evan’s book: Our Secret Paradise. You don’t think you can learn anything new after 24 years, but this book has been revolutionary for our marriage. For those who wanted, and we did, a renewal ceremony was held at our church yesterday. So I got to re-take the hand of my bride and commit once again to love, honor and cherish her for the rest of our lives. It’s interesting that when we get married, we say those words, but what they mean is purly theoretical. Saying them now, they have real meaning. We’ve been sick and well, poor and rich, better and worse. Committing to stay with each other, no matter the circumstances, was a great and awesome privledge. Especially having our four kids witness it and share in it with us.
So, now that my Monday morning, month-end, back from vacation pile has been mostly dealt with, on to the news for the day......

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
