Warning For BMEWS Members
To All Members:
There has recently been a rash of virus, trojan and worm attacks on certain blogs through nefarious e-mails purporting to be from the blog. Unfortunately, we are one of the targets of these asshats. Please remember the following:
- We never solicit from our members in e-mails. If we need your help with anything we’ll post it here.
- We never send out mass-mailings (spam), except for important bulletins (maybe once or twice a year at most) and these NEVER include attachments.
- We jealously guard our member’s e-mails and our mailing lists. Even if the FBI and President Bush asked for your e-mail address, we would have to see a court subpoena first. We will not give out your e-mail addresses to anyone except under legal duress and even then our lawyers will have to approve it.
- When you apply for membership, we send out a confirmation e-mail. All you need to do is reply to that e-mail and you are officially a BMEWS member. There is no activitation code or other such needed to be a member.
- We do not send out e-mails requesting that you change your password or update your profile. All such requests are handled here in the blog, when you login, never in an e-mail.
- Automatic e-mails from comment post updates always have a subject line that begins with ”BMEWS: Comment Posted On ..”, are always in Plain Text (never HTML e-mails) and NEVER have attachments.
- If you receive an e-mail, supposedly from BMEWS, with an attachment .. DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY.
- If you receive any suspicious e-mails, purporting to be from the BMEWS administrator (me), forward it to me before opening it and I will let you know if it is valid or a trap.
- Always run a good anti-virus software package on your computer (Norton or MacAfee or other) and make sure “auto-protect” is enabled.
- To get rid of 99% of spam, purchase a good e-mail screening program like Mailwasher Pro.
- Always treat every e-mail you receive from strangers suspiciously and never open attachments from anyone you don’t know personally.
This has been a public service announcement of the Barking Moonbat Early Warning System. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
- Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
- Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
- Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
