Two Days Of Brave

Under intense pressure from pResident Obola, NY and NJ’s governor’s Cuomo and Chirstie have caved, backing off from their bold and intelligent decision to automatically quarantine every last medical relief person coming to these states from the Ebola stricken nations of West Africa. After all, there are only 30 million of us in these two states, so what collective rights do we have, compared to some crybaby nurse having a tantrum.

So now the Ebola Worker Quarantine is going to be voluntary, which means it won’t exist, which means we’re right back to a selfish Dr. Spencer situation. And the next time one of these people becomes virulent, let’s just set them on fire and burn them to death on the spot. What the fudge, that’s just as insane a reaction one way as letting them walk about in public like human Petri dishes without lids before showing symptoms is in the other direction. Crazy vs Crazy. But now we know: their minor inconvenience is not only more worthwhile than the risk of infecting legions of us, it’s worth far more than allaying the somewhat justifiable fears of tens of millions.

But 2 days of common sense, that’s all we can get from the leaders of two of the more powerful states in the nation. Then they back down. Pretty damn sad.

Under Pressure, Cuomo Says Ebola Quarantines Will Allow Home Isolation

Facing fierce resistance from the White House and medical experts to a strict new mandatory quarantine policy for all medical workers who had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Sunday night that people quarantined in New York who do not show symptoms of the disease would be allowed to remain at home and would receive compensation for lost income.

Mr. Cuomo’s decision came after a weekend in which administration officials urged him and Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey to reconsider the mandatory quarantine they announced on Friday. Aides to President Obama also asked other governors and mayors to follow a policy based on science, seeking to stem a steady movement toward more stringent measures in recent days at the state level.

The announcement by Mr. Cuomo seemed intended to draw a sharp contrast — both in tone and in fact — to the policy’s implementation in New Jersey, where a nurse who arrived Friday from Sierra Leone was swiftly quarantined in a tent set up inside a Newark hospital, with a portable toilet but with no shower.

It was the second striking shift in Mr. Cuomo’s public posture on the Ebola crisis in 72 hours; after urging calm Thursday night, then joining Mr. Christie to highlight the risks of lax policy on Friday, Mr. Cuomo on Sunday night appeared to try to stake out a middle ground.

So what are they saying? Is it now mandatory quarantine in NJ, but only pretend quarantine at home in NY? Sorry, I must be tired, but this is not really clear. I hope Christie is standing firm.

But other states are joining in, doing the Right Thing that Opussybaby is afraid to do.

But Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Christie were not out on their own for long. Late Friday, Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois, a Democrat, issued a mandatory quarantine order for “high-risk” individuals who have come in contact with patients in West Africa. On Saturday, Gov. Rick Scott of Florida, a Republican, signed a similar order.

On Sunday morning, Mr. Christie predicted on Fox News that federal officials would adopt the same standards “sooner rather than later.”

The Obama administration suggested otherwise. Officials said the quarantine rules could create “a system of perverse incentives,” encouraging health care workers to fly into a different airport, like Atlanta or Washington Dulles, that is not located in states that have adopted new policies.

Hey, maybe it will create a “perverse incentive” that will keep these naive do-gooders from going over there in the first place. It’s not like there is much that they can do that the victim’s family, friends, and countrymen can’t do already. So why even allow Americans to go? That works for me; far less risk for the rest of us, and it makes it that much easier to shut the borders to those befouled nations.

Meanwhile ...

Lawyers for a nurse quarantined in a New Jersey hospital say they’ll sue to have her released and file a constitutional challenge to state restrictions for health care workers returning to New York and New Jersey after treating Ebola patients in West Africa. Civil liberties attorney Norman Siegel said Kaci Hickox, who was quarantined after arriving Friday at the Newark airport, shows no symptoms and should be released immediately. He and attorney Steven Hyman said the state attorney general’s office had cooperated in getting them access to Hickox.

If the governors declare a state of State Emergency, then nursey here might be up the creek. Extraordinary times get extraordinary measures, and a declaration may not even be necessary. So bring it. Besides, it’s not like she’s suddenly gone missing and there’s a new set of goalposts up in Giant’s Stadium. This is NJ after all.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
