pc and race

Here we go again. Where in the heck did folks get the idea that they could speak their thoughts or inform their audience on their own web site, using un pc language.  Naughty girl. But what bothers me most are the groveling apologies afterwards. The reaction to what she said is typical of the pc world we live under today. As usual, blown out of all proportion by the bed wetting hand wringers.

Model axed from South African FHM after sparking outrage with racist comments on Twitter

Jessica Leandra used word ‘kaffir’ - a derogatory term for a black person
Also dumped by weightloss firm that is one of her main sponsors

By EMMA REYNOLDS

A popular model was today axed from the South African edition of lads’ mag FHM after she was accused of making racist comments on Twitter.

image

The publication confirmed Jessica Leandra Dos Santos, 20, would no longer appear in its photoshoots after she caused outrage by using a taboo term for black people in a tweet.

The attractive model, known as Jessica Leandra, was widely condemned after she yesterday tweeted details of a confrontation with a black man in her local supermarket.

She wrote: ‘Just, well took on an arrogant and disrespectful kaffir [an offensive term for a black person in Afrikaans] inside Spar. Should have punched him, should have.’

The tweet immediately sparked outrage across South Africa, where race relations remain a key issue just 18 years after the end of apartheid.

FHM editor Brendan Cooper today condemned Leandra’s use of the ‘k-word’, which is still considered one of the country’s most racially-charged terms.

He added that she had been stripped with immediate effect of her title as winner of one of the magazine’s model competitions.

In a statement he said: ‘FHM was appalled by Jessica Leandra Dos Santos’ racist tweets and would like to formally announce that she has been stripped of her title as winner of the FHM Modelbook 2011 competition with immediate effect.

‘It’s important to us that it is noted that she in no way represents the magazine; she was merely the winner of an online poll we ran, and that we totally distance ourselves from her blatantly racist comments.

‘We have removed all pictures of her from our website and will have nothing to do with her in future. FHM is a proudly South African magazine and say “No” to racism.’

Leandra’s axing from FHM came months after the aspiring glamour model found stardom as the winner of one of the magazine’s talent-spotting competitions.

Now then ..... while we ponder the fairness of that.
What if someone said something like ... hm ... lets see. Something really bad like, the only good kraut is a dead one.
How about that?
Well as it happens, someone did say it.
This guy did, last week.  Haven’t heard a word of outrage from anyone. But then I suppose the Germans like Americans and whites in general and Christians in particular are like, open game?
Take a look.

He saw the appalling slaughter inflicted by Germany on Europe, so is it any wonder Patrick Moore’s still sour at the Krauts?

By NIGEL JONES

If the commissars of political correctness at the BBC wore monocles like Britain’s doyen of astronomy, Patrick Moore, what they read in their house journal the ‘Radio Times’ this week would have made those monocles pop out of their eye sockets in utter horror.

For, like Basil Fawlty, the veteran 89-year-old stargazer does not just mention the war, he trumpets it from the rooftops. Moore - who has presented the BBC’s flagship astronomy programme ‘The Sky at Night’ for 55 years since it started in 1957 - warned that we must keep up our guard against the Hun, as Germany was quite capable of starting another world war after their signal failure to succeed in their aim of global domination in rounds one and two.

‘The Germans will try again, given another chance’ said Sir Patrick, adding for good measure: ‘A Kraut is a Kraut is a Kraut. And the only good Kraut is a dead Kraut’. He grudgingly concedes that there may be some good Germans, but witheringly adds ‘I haven’t met any’.

GRANDFATHER OF FOUR TO HAVE SEX CHANGE AT AGE 80

A 78 year old is to become the oldest person to have a sex change operation on the National Health Service.

image

Or to put it another way, an operation compliments of the taxpayer.
Wouldn’t you think that after 78 years he’d have learned to live with it?
And if he always ‘felt like a woman’ then he surely deceived the one he married and had children by.

Now to be known as Ruth, a granddad of four and who was once James, is going to have an operation at the Charing Cross Hospital in central London in Oct. of 2013 when he will be 80.

A spokesman for the hosp. trust says that they can not and would not want to discriminate on grounds of age.

Of course not. Cos that’d be another one of those ‘isms. Ageism. Can’t have that..

And as long as we’re on the subject of the very much odd. (I’m looking for a better word and weird won’t do.)

A gay rights group wants “Parties to Marriage” to be used in place of husband and wife.
No question about it, the world is a mad green onion.
They say that ‘husband and wife’ should be erased from the statute book as part of a bill to legalize same sex marriage.

Hey, remember when M’bama was first elected and the press was all like “sorry for the lack of cartoons, but there’s really nothing funny about him”? My, how times have changed.

h/t to Doc Jeff, who sends me all kinds of good links and pics and stuff.

Crivens, is it November yet? I can’t wait to send this clown packing.

Indian Uprising In Massachusetts

More Than Just One Drop?

Your Daily Stoopid Scandal: MA Senator Claims Cherokee Ancestry

image

Half-breed, that’s all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, she’s no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

Was it right for [Democrat Senatorial candidate] Elizabeth Warren to identify as a minority? Will voters care? A genealogist is supporting Elizabeth Warren’s claim of Cherokee ancestry. But what could linger with voters is whether it’s right for someone who is 1/32 native American to claim minority status.

In the already intense US Senate race in Massachusetts, a new issue has emerged: Did Democratic hopeful Elizabeth Warren, who claims partial native American ancestry, improperly present herself as a minority to further her academic career?

Ms. Warren’s campaign says her Republican rival, incumbent Sen. Scott Brown, is trying to create an issue where none exists.

On Monday, a Massachusetts genealogist entered the fray by citing a century-old document that, if correct, would show Warren to be 1/32 Cherokee in ancestry. That would confirm her statements that, as a youth, she heard relatives discuss ancestral links to Cherokee and Delaware Indians.

It would not necessarily close the matter as an issue in the Senate campaign, however.

Questions would remain, and potentially would resonate with voters, about whether it was appropriate for her to list herself as a minority when her connection to native American identity appears to be so small.

“You don’t need to take a DNA test to know that in America, Elizabeth Warren is viewed and treated as a white woman, with all its benefits,” commented Jamarhl Crawford, publisher of the Blackstonian, a news organization serving blacks in Boston.

Warren has said she could not recall ever listing native American background when applying for college or a job, the Boston Herald reported Saturday. The paper said Warren also commented that she didn’t have a problem with Harvard Law School citing her background as part of its faculty diversity, but that she didn’t know until recently that the school had counted her as a minority.

Well, she certainly passes the pencil test so we can rule out her being black. But by the now nullified Racial Integrity Act of 1924 she certainly isn’t white.

It appears that Ms. Warren has gamed the system, at least at the collegiate application level. And even though she is a Democrat, I can’t say that I blame her. The only solution that works - a bit of pragmitism no Progressive would ever stand for* - is that we should just get over the whole damn race thing and Move On. No more boxes to check, no more records kept. And thus no more Affirmative Action, no hiring quotas, no Diversity Goals. Crivens, we can’t have that, it would be like ... freedom!!

Instead we have today’s modern world, where you seem to have the right to have race, gender, and sexual orientation by choice. An academia where checking one of the desired boxes can make all the difference in admissions. And all the onus of proof being on the accusing side.

Let’s face it, we’ve got a bevy of black entertainers and highly paid public faces who no self-respecting actual African would identify as black. Folks with just the slightest tiny amount of coffee and toffee tone. But the One Drop Rule goes the other way these days, so fire and brimstone be upon you should you dare to question their hyphenated ethnic assertion. We don’t have to look further than the White House to find a white man, son of a white woman, raised by his white grandparents and by his Indonesian step father, who grew up in a mostly white environment, who claims to be black and is thought of as black just because his bigamist tribal father happened to be an African Muslim. But at the very same time, let’s ignore that this white guy had a Muslim father, carries an obviously Muslim name, and received his early schooling in a Muslim madrassa, and that under Islam the penalty for apostasy is death. Once in, never out, yet the whole damn nation (at least the media) insists that he is a Christian - even if it’s a Christianity of the God Damn America kind, that only praises Radical Black Jesus and leads the guy to give hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to pisslamic Palestinian terrorists in an end run around the wishes of the very government he leads - that no other variety of Christian is really willing to accept in their own heart as Christianity.

And let’s not forget about the press not reporting on the large number of random white folks being beaten by black flash mobs as “racial justice” for the Treyvon Martin shooting, done by a self-identified Hispanic guy that the media has decided is White. Too bad he couldn’t spell “George” as “Jorge”.

So does this mean that Elizabeth Warren is an Indian a Native American? I don’t know. But why not? How much tribal casino stock does she own? That could be the new standard in this day and age.

This issue could play into that narrative, if it appears that Warren sought to use a liberal orthodoxy (affirmative action) to promote her own career.

And, regardless of the political stakes, the to-and-fro in recent days points to an interesting question of defining identity.

I wish I could play this game. I can’t. My mother has been doing the family genealogy for more than 20 years, and she’s really great at it, but in all her tracing of our ancestors, all the way back to Rollo the Bloody Viking, all she ever comes up with are white people. English, Swedes, Germans. A couple of long-ago Frenchies, but from the coast when that area was actually England. The peoples of the North Sea. Heck, there isn’t even an Irishman in my tree, and probably not even a Catholic until you go back before the Reformation. And once all the ancestors got over here (they wisely took the 8th boat across, not one of the dangerous first 3), they stuck to their own, forever. Not a single Native American, ever. And promptly forgot about any of that Old Country nonsense. I’m as American WASP as it gets, or, as our Presbyterian preacher put it to me when I was a little kid, “We’re not ethnic.” And that’s too bad, as I would have liked to go to Harvard Law myself. Failing that, it would have been fun to feel even a little connection to the big St. Patrick’s Day or San Gennaro festivals. Nope, not me. Nada. I don’t even have Lutefisk or toad-in-the-hole to turn to. Zip.

We weren’t accepted and I felt ashamed
Nineteen I left them, tell me who’s to blame
My life since then has been from man to man
But I can’t run away from what I am

Update: don’t miss Michelle Malkin’s utterly politically incorrect rant as she skewers Warren (known as “Runs With Lies” in Native American circles) in her post “Sacaja-Whiner”. Pure awesome as she uses every off the reservation pun imaginable, and that’s not me blowing smoke signals.

All Aboard!

UPDATE: this morning we add PurpleK and jackal40 to our ranks.

Jackal40 has a secret, which he may share in time. You may be able to figure it out from his comments. This should be fun.

PurpleK hasn’t mentioned any secrets ... but with that handle, hmm? Only things named purple K I’ve ever heard of are a specialty chemical for fighting burning metal fires, and some super potent dope bud that Old Cat Man would love to stuff his bong with. So maybe he does have a secret after all!

Until I can figure out how to have open comments without spam and without having to renew my subscription several times over to the blog engine (which means no Captcha for now), comments are limited to members who are logged in. To become a member, all you have to do is send me an email saying that you want to be one, along with your choice of sign-in name, screen name, and password. And I’ll get you registered pretty quick. My email address is on the right sidebar. I don’t do a damn thing with your membership information. I don’t sell it, loan it, or even let anyone else look at it. The only things I ask are that you a) not use a pornographic screen name, and b) provide me with a real email address. Peiper and I have quite a bit of email interaction with a number of the members sometimes, and we can’t converse if we can’t contact you. Membership applications with dummy email addresses will be deleted.

we always attack the americans

Red Ken Livingstone is trying to get his old job as London’s mayor back.

The red reference is not the color of his hair. For those surfing by and reading and who don’t know, he is very left and very cozy with the muzzies cos he wants their votes in tomorrow’s election. I won’t go into a song and dance about him here, this is just a bit of background so you’ll know his agenda and where he is politically.  Which brings me to this column written by a former crony of his.

It’s late, I’ve been busy and never got to the second of our two papers today. Which is why I have to H/T my own wife who did read the Telegraph cover to cover and had me stop what I was doing while she read a section of the column to me.  This may read funny to some and I suppose it is in its own way.
As Americans we’re pretty well used to this stuff. But this really does take a prize of some kind when it’s made so out in the open by a fellow who was there.

Take a look.

WE ALWAYS ATTACK THE AMERICANS.

Why this former crony can’t vote for Ken Livingstone

Working as part of Ken Livingstone’s mayoral machine taught me that he’s unfit to rule.

By Dan Hodges

The Labour Party has indulged Ken Livingstone for too long. Think of the tax hypocrisy, and the crocodile tears over his election video. Or his deeply unpleasant comments about the Jewish community, which would – had they been made by any other party member, or against any other minority – have resulted in immediate suspension and expulsion.
“Oh, it’s just Ken being Ken,” plead his acolytes. Well, I know exactly what Ken’s like when he’s “being Ken”, because I used to work for him. Technically, it was for Transport for London, as its director of communications. And the term “worked” is also a bit misleading, conjuring images of a fruitful and extended period of employment. I actually lasted eight months, before departing in somewhat unfortunate circumstances. But this is what I learnt, in the meantime, about how Ken Livingstone and his people operate.

One of the charges levelled at his administration was cronyism. This was spot on: I was one of the cronies. I knew his staff after working for Labour, and received a call asking if I’d consider taking the TFL job.

As someone with virtually no experience of managing staff, handling major budgets or working in a high-profile, customer-facing public sector environment, I viewed myself as ideal for this kind of role. The same can’t be said for the bemused recruitment consultant who phoned me.

“I’ve been told by the mayor’s office to call you.” “Hello.” “You know the deadline’s closed?” “Yes.” “Have you actually applied?” “No.” “And you think you’ll get an interview?”
Just before being appointed, I was taken to see Ken. I was ushered into his mayoral office, with its wonderful view of Tower Bridge, where he told me a bizarre story about the Congolese independence ceremony, in which a member of the Belgian king’s staff had slapped one of the dignitaries. “In the Met, the senior officers get on well with me, but lower down they hate me,” he added. “It’s a bit like that in TFL.” And that was that. I had the job.

A couple of weeks later, I was wondering why. We’d received yet another call about a foreign embassy not paying its parking fines. This time it was Russia. We were working up our usual nonsense about what a disgrace it was when a senior Ken aide rang to ask:

“What are you saying about the Russians?” I duly explained. “No. Attack the Americans.” “What?” “Attack the Americans.” “But we’re not being asked about the Americans.” “I don’t care. We always attack the Americans. They owe loads as well. Attack them. Nothing about the Russians.”

It’s almost creepy, but I like it

Once again Chris Muir’s Day By Day comic strip echoes something I said in yesterday’s post on Obama’s new Forward! slogan. This has happened a fair number of times before. Great minds thinking alike, or a call for Captain Obvious, or just another pure coincidence? I’m not sure, but I like the idea that my ideas are being picked up and spread around. Or that they occur to lots of other people. That makes me feel part of a bigger group and less extreme. More normal. Which is a nice feeling in today’s seriously left-leaning world. Day By Day runs on the sidebar of a whole lot of VRWC blogs. You go Muir!

image

Godwin’s Law is one of those humorous Internet “rules” that we see all the time. It says that in any debate, the person who first calls the other one a Nazi loses (or generally drags the Nazis into the debate). But the law only applies when the analogy is false. In this case, the steps from the Red rallying cry Forward! to the gates of the camps are not that many, and in a straight line. More so, given that we all saw that video a couple of years back where some guy who had snuck into the Weather Underground inner sanctum of Obama’s friend, neighbor, and ghost writer Bill Ayers, and related Ayers’ plans for re-education/elimination camps for huge swaths of the population. And that kind of plan is Nazism of the highest order.

“Arbeit Macht Frei” is a wonderful phrase in it’s original context, because Work really does Set You Free. Free from want, free from poverty. Free from powerless serfdom. And from there, via the opportunity for education that comes with a level of success greater than bare existence, eventually free from the dull-witted world of animals and into the enlightened world of civilized humanity. But of all the cliches co-opted and corrupted by the Left - and the Nazis were an extremely Left Wing bunch, regardless of what today’s Leftists would have you believe (Nazism is only Right Wing if your concept of “center” is totalitarian communism) - that it has pretty much become the Ultimate Lie. Not because the phrase itself is wrong. Because these words were hung over the main gates of the Nazi death camps in WWII.

image

the gates of Dachau

When you wave the Red Banner and take as your own the slogans of tyranny and urge the people Forward! on the road to “Progress” ... that road leads to Hell ... and the camps are just a few semantic steps along the way.  Granted that Muir is commenting on an utterly unconstitutional bill of Harry Reid’s that passed in the Senate the other day, wherein people who are behind in their taxes will have their passports revoked - without due process - and thus not be allowed to leave the country. You don’t introduce such a bill unless your ideology is already so far left that it’s over the “normal” American horizon. And instead of being laughed at, mocked, and deservedly tarred and feathered, the rest of the Senate supports you and passes the bill more than just along party lines ... proof that the ideology is rampant in that chamber of our government. Godwin’s Law does not apply here. The Nazi allusion is correct.

We need more than a new McCarthy. We need a purge. We need a new government. Top down.

A Modernized Classic

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.

Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the oasis, only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand, selling ties…

The Taliban asked, “Do you have water?”

The Jewish man replied, “I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie?  They are only $5.”

The Taliban shouted, “You Idiot!  I do not need an over-priced tie.

I need water!  I should kill you, but I must find water first!”

“OK,” said the little old Jewish man, “It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me. I will show you that I am bigger than that. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant.

It has all the ice cold water you need. Shalom.”

Cursing, the Taliban staggered away over the hill.

Several hours later he staggered back, almost dead, and said:

“You little prick; your brother won’t let me in without a tie...”

I used to live in England and now I live in the United Nations

A couple of months ago I posted a YT video of a woman losing her cool thru drink, and going on a racist rant on the tube. That’s Britspeak for subway.

So then here’s an update which is interesting and just shows how right, maybe I should use the word correct instead, people accused of the big ‘R’ actually are.
There are valid reasons for their many seasons of discontent.  Mostly the feeling that they are losing their country. Their culture is being buried and they don’t understand how it’s been allowed.  The huge and people I do mean the very huge influx of uncontrolled immigration to this ISLAND.
I just need to emphasize that in case anyone forgot.

About a week ago an MP complained loudly after getting a less then quality sandwich and apparently not what he ordered, because the person who waited on him didn’t have much of an understanding of English. And so he asked why the fast food place couldn’t hire English ppl or at lease ppl who had a grasp of the language, instead of so darn many eastern Europeans.  Naturally the bed wet crowd called for his head accusing him of ... wanna say the word?

If every single person who felt the same way this woman did and spoke out the same way, drunk or sober, they would number in the millions and there would not be enough room in the jails to house them all.

Now then, what has me seeing red this chilly grey morning, is that the lady in question here could face jail because of her drunken rant on that subway.

Seems to me I recall a gang of four black muslim slags who beat the hell out of a white girl but were let off cos .... they weren’t used to being drunk.
I wonder if this woman can use the same defense. Course not. She be the wrong color and religion and race.

Happy New Year 1984.

Secretary, 42, told she faces jail after admitting champagne-fuelled racist rant on train that was posted on YouTube

Jacqueline Woodhouse, 42, abused passengers on the Central Line train
Film uploaded to YouTube has been watched 200,000 times
Sikh man on his way back from funeral who filmed it, said he put it on YouTube to ensure speedy justice

By EMMA REYNOLDS

A drunken secretary has admitted hurling racist abuse at fellow passengers on the London Underground after a video of her appeared on the internet.

Jacqueline Woodhouse, 42, directed a drunken, expletive-ridden rant at passengers on the Central Line between St Paul’s and Mile End stations on January 23.

The court was told that Woodhouse had drunk an ‘unknown’ quantity of champagne at a retirement party before getting on the Tube at 11pm.

She now faces jail, after police launched an investigation into a seven-minute long video of the verbal assault that was uploaded to YouTube.

Today at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Woodhouse, of Romford in Essex, admitted causing harassment alarm and distress to the Sikh man who filmed her - Galbant Singh Juttla.

The video clip begins with Woodhouse shouting in a thick Essex accent about ‘foreign s*** heads’.

She turns to her passengers and asks: ‘Where do you come from? Where do you come from? Where do you come from?

‘I would like to know if any of you are illegal? I am sure like 30 per cent of you are.’

She then turns on the Pakistani man sitting next to her, who is singing his national anthem, and threatens to ‘punch him in the face.’

‘I wouldn’t mind if you loved our country,’ she adds.

She then turns to Mr Juttla’s camera, as he assures her he would rather be listening to his music than to her.

She goes on: ‘Why don’t you tell me where you’re from?’

He replies: ‘I am British.’

She gets her phone out of her black handbag and looks as if she is filming him too.

Mr Juttla warns her: ‘Watch what you are saying.’

She replies: ‘I used to live in England and now I live in the United Nations.’

As he tells her to keep her mouth shut, informing her that she has had too much to drink, she becomes extremely agitated and starts screaming.

‘It’s not your country anyway so what’s your problem?’ she yells. ‘It’s been overtaken by people like you.’

The court heard that Mr Juttla decided to film Woodhouse after she started berating an unidentified black female. She then sat down between two men and began another barrage of abuse.

Woodhouse told police she could not remember the rant but recognised it was her in the video.

She attended court today wearing a black suit and white shirt. She sat in the court with her brow furrowed and her head bowed as the magistrate was shown the video clip.

Ms Campbell said Woodhouse verbally abused a male passenger while on a train to Stratford. She asked whether he had paid taxes, adding: ‘I have had enough of it, why don’t they go back to where they come from?’

Outside court Mr Juttla, who runs a print company, said: ‘I found it very distressing.

‘I uploaded it to YouTube because I thought that was the fast-track process to catching this person.

‘I also needed to show the public that kind of person is out there and not to put up with this kind of behaviour.

‘My kids have seen the video and they are disgusted by it. They don’t expect for someone to shout abuse at their dad.’

Adjourning sentence, District Judge Elizabeth Roscoe said: ‘Bearing in mind the level of abuse, the persistence of the abuse, the number of people on the train unable to leave without aborting their journey, and the children present, means that I think the court has to have a pre-sentence report.

‘I make it clear that all options are open to the sentencing court, including committal or immediate custody.’

The judge imposed stringent conditions banning her from the Tube network (for two years it’s reported elsewhere) and she was ordered to keep to a daily curfew between 10pm and 6am, which will be monitored by electronic tag.

She will be sentenced at the same court on May 29.

Now let us pray, but just leave god out of it.

How’s that for a headline?

The council that kept its prayers – by dropping God

A council has dropped references to God from the prayer with which it opens meetings, under pressure from secularist campaigners.

By Jasper Copping

For as long as anyone can remember, councillors in Gloucestershire have stood up for a brief prayer before their meetings get under way.
But when three agnostic and atheist members staged a protest against the historic practice by remaining seated, the chairman decided something must be done to retain council unity.
So he hit upon an apparently ingenious solution: from now on, the prayer would still be said – but with all references to God removed.
So rather than asking “may He give us wisdom to carry out our duties ...”, the chairman now states “may we find the wisdom ...” - and the “prayer” still ends with the chairman leading other members in saying “amen”.
The authority is one of dozens across Britain which have recently scrapped or significantly altered their custom of saying prayers at the start of meetings under pressure from secular campaigners, who argue the practice breaches their human rights and excludes non-believers and people from other faiths.

I don’t know what percentage of the population is made up of non-believers or agnostics. I don’t even think it should matter. I also think these folks doing all the shouting out of all proportion to whatever numbers they add up to, are fakes. They are looking for issues and the majority are caving into them every time.
How are my human rights violated if I’m in a place where a prayer is conducted? Never bothered me. Never felt ‘excluded’ or any of the other phony, I’m a victim
maladies.  But we need to be fair.  These ppl are doing their jobs. Right?  They are, “activists.”
Where the hell’s that gun?

here’s an idea. keep bad teachers on the job but payem less. say what?

A MUST share if I only posted the headline I saw in one morning paper today.

I know newspapers have to grab our attention, and sometime the headlines do not always square with the actual story.
However, where unions are involved in any step whatever in the process, you’ll almost always find a snake pit.

Here’s the headline.

BAD TEACHERS SHOULD BE PAID LESS, SAY MINISTERS.

Hey, wait a minute.  How many parents will welcome bad teachers at any price?

Does anyone know any parents anywhere that would?  I betcha even union heads want the best (left wing) teachers for their offspring.  But yours?  Maybe not.
In the last 18 months only one of five teachers judged to be incompetent was sacked.
And he or she had to be pretty bad for the teachers union to allow that.

MPs back plan for performance-related pay in schools

Weak teachers could be paid less than the very best performers under Government plans to improve standards of state education, it has emerged.
By Graeme Paton, Education Editor

Ministers are considering plans to create a clearer link between pay and classroom performance as part of a new drive to boost results and attract the best graduates into the profession.
The disclosure came as a cross-party group of MPs warned that a new system of performance-related pay was needed to stop the worst teachers hiding behind a “rigid and unfair” national salary structure.
It follows warnings from Ofsted last year that teaching was not good enough in more than four-in-10 schools, with “dull” lessons leading to poor standards of classroom behaviour.
Last night, it emerged that Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, has already written to the national body that reviews teachers’ salaries to seek advice on how the Government can “strengthen the link between pay and performance”.

But the move has been attacked by teaching unions who are strongly opposed to any attempt to dismantle national rules on pay and conditions.
They have already threatened strike action over proposals to introduce regional pay rates across the public sector.
But the cross-party committee’s report said: “No longer should the weakest teachers be able to hide behind a rigid and unfair pay structure.

But why keep weak teachers at all? At any price?
Some students will do well in spite of teachers. They are exceptions and there are always those. But not by huge numbers.  Kids need the best they can get in schools and especially in the world we have today.  2nd rate is just not good enough.  Been a very long time since I attended school, so I’m not an expert on the subject. My uneducated guess is that most teachers are up to the mark. The sexy stories that concern the bad ones give the impression that the entire profession is populated by second rate failures.
But it’s certain as well that as long as unions protect the less worthy, things won’t much improve.

a socialist conservative party?

This Conservative Party is more socialist than any government I have seen in my lifetime

By Peter Mullen, Politics

The Rev Dr Peter Mullen is a priest of the Church of England and former Rector of St Michael, Cornhill and St Sepulchre-without-Newgate in the City of London. He has written for many publications including the Wall Street Journal.

The Tories will not recover from the catastrophic election defeat which faces them this week. They don’t deserve to – because they have spent the last two years alienating their core supporters. These supporters, of whom I used to be one, are very largely old-fashioned, traditional middle class voters. I suppose we can be described as “respectable” – before, as GK Chesterton said, that word became very unrespectable.

What we old Tories stand for is the defence of the realm against foreign enemies and the maintenance of law and order at home. In these matters the Tory party under Cameron has betrayed us. The armed forces have been run down, even to the extremity of a proposal that we might have to share an aircraft carrier with the French – thus prompting the question of what we do with our half of it when their half surrenders.

One person posting under comments took serious issue with the remark, very funny tho it was, about the French and surrender.

I get very irritated when I see the French get slagged off
once again about their defeat and surrender in 1940. The author shows serious
ignorance regarding the strategic realities facing both Britain and France in
1940 – they faced an unequal battle from the moment that Germany and the Soviet
Union signed their non-aggression pact permitting Germany to throw its entire
military weight against the West as Stalin clearly intended (hoping for a long
war in the West which would enervate all his enemies simultaneously!). The
rapid collapse of the Allied armies spared Britain and France the terrible losses suffered in the First World War.
The subsequent horrendous losses suffered by the Soviet Union were largely
caused by Stalin’s own savagery, incompetence and meddling. In 1940 France did not
have the luxury of a 25 mile wide anti-tank ditch behind which it could wait until
the strategic balance of forces became more favourable. I acknowledge that the Vichy regime was far too
enthusiastic to cooperate with its victorious enemy but that is a separate
matter.

The Rev. Mullen continues:

The riots of last summer are all the evidence we need to prove that the government cannot maintain law and order.

Boris Johnson says the government should go in for “more tax cuts.” More in addition to what? There have been no significant tax cuts. In fact every week there are proposals for ever more inventive methods of extorting money from the hardworking and the thrifty. I actually find myself paying tax on my meagre pension. Tories used to believe in supporting industry, both private and corporate, and rewarding thrift. Not any longer. We are taxed to the hilt, and industry is hamstrung by more and more regulation. Does Dave really think that the way to electoral success is by the systematic impoverishment of the middle class?
So what does Cameron’s Tory party stand for? It stands for massive state spending on failed institutions such as the NHS and what is laughably called state education. It funds, out of the taxes of the hardworking and the thrifty, a profligate public sector and a bloated welfarist culture. While turning its back on traditional Tory values, the modern – Oh yes, how very modern! – Conservative party is obsessed with the promotion of outlandish minority and sectarian causes.
In other words, Dave’s Tory party is more socialist than any socialist government I have seen in my lifetime. Why should I, or any other conservative-minded person vote for it?

Of course the obvious answer and the one he’s looking for is, no one should.
And I can easily understand his feeling. BUT … as we all know and I am not defending Mr. Cameron, nor is it my place to do so, and as someone else has pointed out in reply to his column, this is a coalition govt.  The cons couldn’t gather together enough votes to form a conservative govt. However, be that as it may, the PM nevertheless strikes me as not being totally committed and really is consv. lite in his heart of hearts.  Or that’s how he impresses me anyway.

Here’s someone else’s take on it.

I think he fails to realise that the government in place is not the Conservative party, its a compromise government made up of LibDem and Conservative.
The LibDems would be failing as any credible party if they were not able to hold the Conservatives to their compromise that they agreed when they formed the joint government shortly after the last election.
But I do accept that the conservatives are nothing like the party of past years. Everything these days in the UK has to be ‘middle of the road’ politics that never seems to get us anywhere. So all the policies are based around VERY CENTER left & right views.
The problem is that the mainstream media is backed up with powerful lobby groups, be that unions, investors etc. that always stop politics in the form of public opinion at least from straying away from centre and towards the left or right.
It is a shame, but I would say the vast majority of the UK public follow the opinions of the likes of BBC news, Sky news, tabloids etc. etc. and as these media groups look for ‘stories’ they give an un-balanced amount of voice to the minorities......and this is what is keeping the UK from making any real progress on politics. As everything has to be centred in order to keep everyone happy,......even though the media portray the unbalanced voice of the minority views.
So its no wonder that Cameron is now very centred in politics...the party has indeed moved a significant way to the left from what it was, but how can we get anything different these days? Vote for another centered party? Because the media don’t like the others.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
