to be or not to be a jerk. that is the question. whether tiz smarter ta be just stupid or >>?

Honest. I am telling the truth and the whole truth. Or very close to it.

I do not go looking for things to upset myself or get me seeing imaginary and unmanageable red curtains. Maybe I should simply ignore those columnists who I know damn well will bother me.  Actually, there are a few I do avoid for that reason.  It isn’t just what they say alone but how. And I also started some months back to avoid those who I know have an anti American slant without knowing a thing about us, outside a visit or two.
Well anyway ....

For reasons that really do escape me, I will on occasion take a quick look at the Piers Morgan column in our Sunday magazine edition of the Sunday Mail.  This morning was one of those occasions and while I didn’t see any bright red curtains, I did have the thought that ppl like him and that fool Sean Penn, really must believe that the general public are know nothings and easily fooled.  OK I can buy easily fooled like during presidential elections.

What got my goat this early morning was the idea that he thought he could easily pass off something so old as something brilliant and new.

Are most of you folks familiar with an old movie that stared Peter Sellers called, “The Mouse That Roared”?

Some readers will have seen that very funny movie, but there might be a number who never heard of it. So for those who are not at all familiar, here’s the basic idea.

An impoverished backward nation declares a war on the United States of America, hoping to lose, but things don’t go according to plan.

The idea is to immediately surrender and then become the recipient of American foreign aid to help their recovery.
That’s it.  The movie dates to about 1959, so not too recent you will agree.

And that friends brings me to the reason for this post. Because ha,ha isn’t he the clever one, Piers appears to credit Penn with being, well, funny and clever.  Even a Brit audience might recall that movie.  So while Morgan is writing for an essentially UK audience, he must think all of them are easily fooled.  But enough of what I think.  Here’s the subject of this post in his words.

Sean Penn’s a whirlwind of intensity and passion - but great fun, too

By, Piers Morgan

The text message was intriguing: ‘Want to come to a small private house party and meet the Haiti Prime Minister?’ asked Sean Penn.

I befriended Hollywood’s most firebrand actor after several interviews.

He’s an extraordinary whirlwind of intensity and passion, on and off screen. But great fun, too.

The Haitian PM, Laurent Lamothe, was an impressive man – he’s driven through a series of bold initiatives to try and pull the country out of the chaos caused by the 2010 earthquake.

But it was double Oscar-winner Penn who impressed me even more.

He spoke powerfully and eloquently about what more needs to be done.

Now here’s the brief bit of bs that is the reason for this post.
How phony can he get?

He told a hilarious story about the notorious former Haitian dictator Papa Doc Duvalier.

‘He was urged to attack America by some of his advisors, on the basis that, after they won, the Americans would then pay for reconstruction of the country as they did with Germany and Japan.

He thought for a few seconds, then shook his head and said, “I can’t risk this.”

‘When his henchmen asked why, he explained: “Because we might win the war!”’

Penn fell about laughing.

‘That shows you the incredible, unique, fighting spirit of the Haitian people.’

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
