the cat house

It seems our whole lives are now revolving around the needs of two little kittens.  Right down to our plans for the Holidays.

The small cat, the sickly one, Sniffles, isn’t doing so good. After two full weeks on the kitty amoxicillin, we had her back to the vet because she’s still sick. And now she’s lost weight. Poor thing. Doesn’t want to eat. So it’s on to a stronger antibiotic for another week or two, but that’s going to be it. And I’m almost hand feeding her lumps of canned cat food after sweet talking her, rubbing and brushing her until she’s a total purr machine. Then she’ll get up from her cozy pile of blankets, snerch her sinuses for a bit - I snuff my own nose back at her, and make coughing and yakking noises too so she doesn’t feel embarrassed. Wipe away any boogers and crusties with a warm damp washcloth, then we can smell the food bowl in front of us. Yummy nummy nom-noms kitteh, ooh look! And she’ll eat. And eat. And eat. While making the most terrible sounds in her throat and head, like nails and broken glass being ground up in a tin bucket. Makes my skin crawl. But I can get 2, sometimes 3 good sized meat lumps in her, plus some kibbles. Call it 1/4 of a 6oz can, which isn’t bad considering she only weighs 2.75lb. She’s still a baby kitty, mostly.

She does have the energy to get down from her perch on the counter-top and use the litter pan. And I can hear her playing with her little ball and her felt mousey at night. Plus we both play with her and get her to run around a bit. So she isn’t at death’s door or anything. She’s just small, and low energy. The other one, Dizzy, the blind cat, is growing like a weed, has become really assertive, and runs around the house at 100mph. We brought her in at least 4 or 5 weeks before we collected Sniffs, and the proper feeding and good care has made a huge difference.

The two don’t play well together. We figured, well, you know, sister kittens and all that. Soft play, mutual grooming, play tug with the soft chew toy, chase each other around the house, a bit of the old Under The Door Paw game, plenty of double snuggles. Pillow parties and make-overs. We thought wrong. It may be in fun, or slightly in fun, but they attack each other incessantly. Cat Wars. I never would have thought it, but the blind cat is the relentless aggressor. Until Sniffs get cornered, then Dizz gets a face full of furious. Nobody’s bleeding or crying, but it’s much rougher than we expected, and far rougher than their wild brothers and sisters play outside here. So we pull them apart, and Sniffs goes back into her safe room and goes back to sleep.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
