Summer League week 1
Summer bowling league got under way tonight. We’re down at least 6 teams from last year, as the bowling alley has added a late night “big money” league that follows ours at 9pm. $1500 for the 1st place team of 4 people. $375 each!! So we’re down to 9 or 10 teams. Summer league is always a bit wobbly; you get some folks who join late, a few who quit after a week or so, teams that split up, etc. But that’s Ok. It’s just for fun. Mostly.
I was appointed Vice President. I didn’t even have to ask. The alley owner just looked at me and said I’d do it. Well, Ok. It usually isn’t any work at all, but this time I’ve got a task right from the get go. I have to convince everybody that we want to start 10-15 minutes earlier so we’re all gone by the time the 9 o’clock squad shows up. That shouldn’t be so hard. I hope.
So we got most of our team from last year back together, except for the tall and leggy Natalie. She’s gone. The woman is 55 but still has the figure of a fashion model. I guess she gets plenty of excercise being a carpenter and building houses for a living. So we got Doug instead. I know Doug. He’s one of those nervous bowlers who’s always worried about something or other. I’m Ok with that, as long as he doesn’t make trouble. Doug can bowl real well when he relaxes, he just has a hard time relaxing. He starts on night shift next week, so we won’t see him again until July anyway. Just so long as he prebowls every week.
So we picked a team name; my wife chose “Revved Up” for us. “Rev” being the bowling word for putting spin on the ball, which is what you want so that it hooks. Funny, I thought we’d keep the “Stercus Maximus” I came up with for the winter team. Guess not! Still, Revved Up is better than Alley Oops, or Minds In The Gutter, or any of those classic tacky bowling team names. Good enough. I get to be team captain too. Yay me!
We went up against some team - they haven’t named themselves yet - with this woman Nikole who carries a 224 average. That’s a fantastic average for a woman. Heck, it ain’t bad for a guy either. Plus her team has 2 new members without book averages, so we had to bowl as hard as we could to beat the handicap, (I spoke up at the meeting, and the league went with 90% again) which wouldn’t be figured out until afterwards. So we took the first game by 102, the second game by 78, and the third game by 211. While that looks like a wipeout, I think they sandbagged the last game, as Nikole’s score was down 85 for that one. And when we ran their numbers, the handicap was only 65, so we took all 3 and the wood. So that’s a nice 7-0 start for the season. Just 11 more weeks to go.
I made my average. Barely. I couldn’t get any action off my ball, so I left it to be steamed. Modern balls are quite porous, and they soak up quite a lot of oil. You can scrub them all you want, even soak them in denatured alcohol, but you’re only going to get the surface oil. So every 2-3 months they need to go through the steamer. I’ve cracked 2 balls in half trying to do it myself, so I’ll leave this job to the pros. I’ll stop up there tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise I’ll be getting a balance hole drilled.
My summer goals for improvement: Getting low, and getting out early. I stand up too straight, and I tend to hang onto the ball too long. Which sometimes results in me bowling as if I was pitching a 16 pound softball. Not the best technique.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
