sleep deprived

Oy, my sleep got all messed up last night. I woke up freezing at 5am. Now at 11am I want to turn on the A/C and take a nap.

No progress on the garden. Waiting on word back from The Committee. OTOH, I’ve already figured out a workaround that will let me raise the garden bed 10” and not have any “walls” made from the edger stones, not even one a mere 2 blocks tall. Meh hee hee hee.

Did my Sunday work, which went fine now that I picked up a new vacuum after the old one died. When I was done with that, we went gas grill shopping. OMG, the money you can spend on a grill!!!  But the little $99 POS we bought as an emergency cooker after last year’s hurricane is half falling apart already. Worse, it’s a terrible cooking device given to massive flare-ups. And it’s too small to cook for more than just the two of us. So we’re looking at something bigger. But not too big. And therein lies the quandary. How much is enough, how much is too much? How do you spot the quality point where you can be certain? Is it unreasonable to expect a decent gas grill to last a decade if it’s treated right?

We fell in love with the Weber Genesis E-330. It’s sturdy, the lid feels like it came off an army tank, it’s more than big enough, and with 3 strong burners plus a sear burner, it ought to get really hot really fast. And we can get a powered rotisserie attachment to spin chickens and ducks around on. All this, plus it comes in designer colors! But the cost ... OMG. OMG OMG OMG. On the other hand, “luxury” grills can hit you up for well over a grand. How can I tell what features are useful and which ones are silly? How can I figure out what quality point will last, and which quality point is getting into the wretched excess category? I already have the lowdown on stainless steel, that it’s something to shy away from. And I’m concerned about anything made in China, especially if it is cast metal, or has paint on it.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
