Oy, what to post?

Bowling league got canceled last night. Snowed out. We took about 4-5” of slop, which is rapidly melting. Good. And stay away. No more snow.

The head of the ATF is resigning. He gave 11 days notice. Gosh, and that’s right on the heels of the TOTAL FAILURE of that slick attempt at banning M855 green tip 5.56 ammo, which caused such a furor online, and then on TV news, that it spurred a HUGE piece of the Senate and the House to publicly decry the attempt. Guess he made the boss look bad, getting caught out an all. So, under the bus with him too!

A majority in both the Senate and House — 52 senators, 238 House members — have joined to oppose the Obama administration’s move to ban a popular type of ammo used in the top-selling AR-15 rifle and pistol because it pierces police body armor.

A week after the House members, led by Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte, sent a letter of opposition to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley echoed that in his own letter signed by 51 others.

Right ... so now it’s bye-bye to another outsider sinecure soul brutha appointed by Obama.

B. Todd Jones, the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), today announced he will depart to pursue opportunities in the private sector. Jones’s resignation becomes effective March 31.

The head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives plans to step down at the end of the month, more than three years after taking over the agency as it was reeling from a botched sting operation.

B. Todd Jones was the first ATF director confirmed by the Senate, taking office in July 2013. Prior to that, he served for nearly two years as the agency’s interim chief in the wake of its “Fast and Furious” gun-walking program, which caused a major controversy and led to the departure of several officials.

The job now goes, temporarily, to Thomas Brandon, a white guy who has been with the ATF since 1989, and currently serves as ATF Deputy Chairman.

At the time of his appointment as Deputy Director, Mr. Brandon was serving as the Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Division, directing field operations for ATF in Arizona and New Mexico.

A member of the Senior Executive Service and a seasoned law enforcement professional, Mr. Brandon began his ATF career as a Special Agent in 1989, with Detroit as his first office assignment. Rising through the ranks at ATF, he served in many management positions including Special Agent in Charge and Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Division; Supervisory Special Agent of the Detroit Arson and Explosives Enforcement Group; Special Agent with the Office of Inspection in Washington, DC; Supervisory Special Agent of the Achilles Enforcement Group in Los Angeles, California; and as the Division Intelligence Officer with the Phoenix, Arizona, Field Division. Mr. Brandon also held the position of Chief of ATF’s National Academy, in Glynco, Georgia.

Mr. Brandon is a member of several professional organizations including the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, in 1987.

Mr. Brandon proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1978 to 1982, where his assignments included Embassy duty in Rome, Italy, and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Mr. Brandon is a native of New Jersey.

Sounds like Brandon is the one who should have been in charge the whole time. I have no idea what, if any, his involvement in the whole Fast And Furious scandal was. But at least his temporary leadership will be driven by experience.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
