What, this isn’t called the Ticonderoga?

#2 Looking Bomb Will Soon Be #1

The B61-12 bomb, described as the most dangerous ever produced, features a tail kit from aircraft manufacturer Boeing which will enable a precision-guided trajectory.

It also has a mechanism that enables an adjustment of the explosive force – ranging from a high of 50,000 tons of TNT to a low of 300 tons - and can be delivered by stealth jet bomber.

Military experts believe the weapon’s accuracy and variable power reduces the risk of collateral damage and potential widespread civilian casualties.

General James Cartwright, the retired commander of US Strategic Command, told America’s PBS News: “If I can drive down the yield, drive down the likelihood of fallout, does that make it more usable in the eyes of a president or national security decision-making process?

“The answer is yes, it likely could be more usable.”

But this has led to a number of former and current senior US defence officials voicing concerns that the precise nature of the weapon could provide a rationale for its future use in conflict.

OK, so they made a variable nuke into a guided glide bomb. That makes sense I’d say. And therein lies a whole can of worms. It makes so much sense that you’d want to use it. All the time!

Nah. As usual, the folks in charge aren’t seeing things properly. If you can make a nuke so precise that it becomes a tactical weapon, then there’s almost no reason for it to be a nuke in the first place. Or perhaps just a teeny tiny one. So tear out the variable power bits, and pull out the extra plutonium that could allow this piglet to be a 50Mt bomb, and just put in enough to make it a 5Kt. Enough to wipe out an airport, or a smaller city, or an aircraft carrier, or a military supply depot, etc. Now you’ve got something fearsome; a nuke that folks are eager to use.

I was hoping that this one had a cool name. Cool names for outrageous weapons are important. Like MOAB, for that giant standard bomb we spent a few billion developing and then never used. And this one could have been easy! Look at the picture! It looks like a pencil. It even says Number 2 on the side! So quick, let’s get the generic trade name for pencil and use that. You know, like Xerox or Kleenex; product names that define the genre. The Dixon! The Ticonderoga! The Pearl! ( Blackwing and Mirado are out because those aren’t yellow pencils ) ... oops, it turns out that, while any cheap ballpoint can be a Bic, and any halfway good one can be a Parker, we have no generic name for a pencil. It’s just a pencil. Or a #2. How about that crap?

Guess we should cancel the bomb program then. No cool name, no new nuke. It’s not like we don’t have plenty of other ones sitting around already. Hmmphh. Well fine. Screw you guys, I’m going home.

Here, have a bunch of links and some graphics (right click for larger versions). Free! WTH, and why not? After all, your friendly government is in the process of spending ELEVEN BILLION DOLLARS to execute this bomb overhaul project. Guess we still have quite a few of the buggers sitting around, what what? (drop test video. Spin rocket only burns for half a second, but it’s enough to spin ‘er up)

once more onto the beach

Or, as the guy said on South Park’s TV show Croc Hunter, as he’d stick his thumb up the bum of any animal he caught, “That’ll really piss ‘em off !!”

FRENCH satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has been inundated with fresh death threats after featuring two naked Muslims on the front cover this week.

Islamic terrorists sickened the world in January last year when brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, forced their way into the offices of the Paris-based satirical weekly newspaper and turned assault rifles on staff killing 11 people and injuring 11 others.

The reason was believed to be an anti-Muslim joke and image of Mohammed on the front cover.

Undaunted, the latest issue of the magazine features a naked man and woman running towards the shoreline of a beach.

The man’s penis can be seen through his long beard, and the woman is totally naked except for her veil over her head and shoulders and a caption below reads: “The reform of Islam: Muslims, loosen up” or “Musulmans decoincez vous”.

Charlie Hebdo bosses are so worried they have called in the French police.

I thought at first, reasonably, that the real furor might be over the depiction of the muslim man as being circumcised. Which would be a Joooo thing, right? No, turns out that the little snip is very common with them too. So what’s their gripe? The couple is nude on the beach. This is France. So??  rolleyes

Gee, That Worked Out So Well

ObamaCare ==> Hellena Handbasket

Premiums soar as coverage falters and providers run for the hills. Only massive bribery can keep them now.

The health insurance exchanges that are the beating heart of Obamacare are on the edge of collapse, with premiums rising sharply for ever narrower provider networks, non-profit health co-ops shuttering their doors, and even the biggest insurance companies heading for the exits amid mounting losses.  Even the liberal Capitol Hill newspaper is warning of a possible “Obamacare meltdown” this fall.

Three states – Alaska, Alabama, and Wyoming – are already down to just a single insurance company, as are large parts of several other states, totaling at least 664 counties.

UnitedHealth is pulling out completely, Humana is pulling out of 88 percent of counties it was in, and last weak Aetna strongly suggested it will be exiting, too, unless it gets bribed to stay with a huge, annual infusion of direct corporate bailout payments from taxpayers.

Dealing with the wreckage will be at the top of the agenda for the new president and Congress next year, and their options will be limited – especially if, as appears likely, we will continue to have divided government.  Most Democrats would prefer moving toward a totally government-run system while Republicans continue to favor repeal.

Wasn’t there another ObamaLie back in teh day about how this wasn’t all about setting up a single payer (ie government run) system?

But don’t worry, it gets worse:

Cost of Obamacare Medicaid Expansion 49% Higher Than Previously Estimated

[ perhaps that’s because you have the CIA and the military doing your estimates, and feeding you only the “blue sky” numbers? And what about the rest of us who were screaming from the balconies about what would happen? Oh right. Dismissed us totally. Because we were raycis. ]

A government report finds that the cost of expanding Medicaid to millions more low-income people is increasing faster than expected, raising questions about a vital part of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

The law provided for the federal government to pay the entire cost of the Medicaid expansion from 2014 through the end of this year.

Obama has proposed an extra incentive for states that have not yet expanded Medicaid: three years of full federal financing no matter when they start. But the new cost estimates could complicate things.

In a recent report to Congress, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said the cost of expansion was $6,366 per person for 2015, about 49 percent higher than previously estimated.

“We were told all along that the expansion population would be less costly,” said health economist Brian Blase with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia. “They are turning out to be far more expensive.”

Don’t forget, ObamaCare isn’t the son of RomneyCare. It’s the rebirthed Frankenstein bastard of HillaryCare.

Sunday Dead

What the Hell, why not go all in? Update post:

Got Four Hours? Here’s an entire concert. No, there is no more Grateful Dead. They’re dead and gone. And retired. Many times over. They even went Further, but you can only go so far. So here they are again, having absorbed and transformed John Mayer into their folds. Check out his trippy little Cassidy about half an hour in. Or his skillful exit from an otherwise discordant UJB jam around 2:42:0.  Mayer isn’t 100% there yet, but he is becoming, and his influence adds some needed life force. He stills needs to master the essential art of into so that the music never stops.

They’re so old, they’re Dead. And Company. Makes for a whole morning’s worth of background boogey.

Original post:
The ladies sure seem to love John Mayer. And his music! Most of that is sweet, light, sort of a campus pub sound, with a happy tired glow to it; a post-coital I’m-too-stoned-to-do-anything-but-breathe sense of relaxedness.

Imagine my surprise to see him get all frisky in this cover of I Know You Rider, starting at 26:48. Nice job Johnny boy!

Ok, he bobbles it a bit at first, and it takes him a few measures to get in the groove. And of course the mix is flatter than a pancake with awful vocals. You have to be there.

OTOH, this whole thing shouldn’t be much a surprise. Mayer has joined the endless train, and is touring now as part of Dead & Company.

Right. It’s 4:45am. Maybe I should go back to sleep for a bit. It’s already warm and muggy outside; we’re in for another day of sledgehammer sauna. 99°F with 99% humidity, followed by oppressive heat and humidity.

Hide Your Eyes!!

Generation Pussy

For your own safety, look away! Look away!!!  [/sarc]

It blows me away to see just how insanely over sensitive our current generation of college students are. They’ve been protected from every last little raindrop that could fall, and have never ever learned to deal with anything that could be dangerous, or upsetting, or even anything that might perhaps make them wonder or even doubt any of their previously held conceptions. Everything that isn’t exactly in line with their infantile world and worldview has been kept away from them, for safety.

And then they were raised by the State, which taught them that all White people are evil racists, and that America is evil, the Constitution is meaningless, and that they should be subservient to Blacks in all aspects of their lives, from music to fashion to dance to mating habits to social outlooks. And that gave us such things as Justin Beiber. But wait, it gets worse. The worst part is that not a single one of them finds anything wrong with extreme reactions to things they don’t like. Got the wrong opinion? Kill him. Trump giving a rally? Protest and riot. Conservative radio host scheduled to give a humorous talk? Faint, throw up, crap your pants, demand immediate counciling. Because you’ve been RAPED. Violated. Assaulted by the idea that such a talk would be allowed. Not actually given. Certainly not actually attending and hearing the guy’s words. No. Total hairy conniptions over merely the awareness that such an event might take place. That’s what a risk-panic bunch of shit weasel PC pussies those wonderful helicopter parents and the socialist school system have raised. That’s the future of our nation.

Colleges have “free speech zones”, little walled off enclaves where the students are allowed to say whatever they want. But you know that isn’t entirely true. Schools routinely police Facebook and other social media sites, and punish their students for things they say there, even if it has nothing to do with the school. Why, just last week there was that story about the young woman of Indian descent who was BWOC in her university’s student council, who had the temerity to disagree with the #BlackLivesMatter nonsense, and wrote instead that #AllLivesMatter. Indian descent, remember. Quite possibly a Hindu, a faith that believes in the sanctity of the soul far more than just in humans. That’s why they won’t eat meat. “Nothing with faces”. Even plants have their own little spark of God within them. So of course All Lives Matter to them. And perhaps her. Not that that mattered. Her school allowed the student council to make special double secret rules up, so that she could be punished for her offense outside of normal channels and with no recourse. Due Process? Fuck due process, burn her at the stake.

And now the latest. Artworks have to be hidden away. Because they’re so offensive. Why are they so offensive? Because they show white explorers getting along just fine with Indians, way back in the fur trader days. Heck they might depict fur pelts too, faint and double faint.  And no slaves, or any other negroes being abused or building anything.

Unreal. So they have to deny the existence of such things because they percolate thoughts and awarenesses that go against the accepted wisdom. Double Minus Ungood. If you can’t destroy them, lock them away. Now get us emergency counseling because we’re so upset at having to even think such things could exist. We’ve been physically assaulted. Raped. Again!!

Avert your eyes: This painting of a fort was deemed offensive and must be kept in a locked room.

Notice how the First People here are being forced into subservient roles, by paddling along with everyone else. Huh???

Historic paintings moved to ‘controlled’ campus rooms after university finds them ‘harmful’

Historic paintings that adorned the halls of a Wisconsin university for decades—until someone took offense at their depiction of Native Americans—will be seen by appointment only.

The paintings, which critics say show the Native Americans in a subservient role to white settlers, were destined for storage until the latest compromise was reached. University of Wisconsin-Stout President Bob Meyer said the potentially “harmful” art will be kept locked in conference rooms.

“...Their current uncontrolled access pose a risk of having a harmful effect on our students and other viewers,” Meyer said in a statement last week on the paintings.

The 80-year-old paintings, which had hung in the hallways of Harvey Hall, depict French fur traders canoeing down the Red Cedar River with American Indians and a French fort. Both were produced by artist Cal Peters in 1936 and were recently restored with money from the Wisconsin Historical Society.

The controversy over the artwork began when the school’s Diversity Leadership Team complained the paintings were offensive to Native American students and promoted acts of “domination and oppression.”

In response, Meyer first ruled that the artwork be placed in storage but later changed his decision after criticism from First Amendment groups. He has since ordered “Perrault’s Trading Fort” taken to the university archives, while the “French Trappers on the Red Cedar” will be placed inside the dean’s conference room in Harvey Hall, the largest academic building on campus.

After a series of consultations with students, Chancellor Bob Meyer announced the works would removed from the first and second floors of Harvey Hall, as they risked “having a harmful effect on our students and other viewers.”

If the paintings are displayed, it should be in a “controlled gallery space,” he said, with appropriate “context”for viewers. However, the school says that for now, Peters’ works will most likely stay out of public view.

“There’s a segment of Native American students, that when they look at the art, to them it symbolizes an era of their history where land and possessions were taken away from them, and they feel bad when they look at them,” Meyer told Wisconsin Public Radio.

Oh dippity-do dogshit on that. Even if that were slightly true, these paintings depict a time before that, so STFU.

In response to the action at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, the National Coalition Against Censorship wrote a letter to Meyer arguing that “removing representations of historically oppressed groups from view will not change the facts of history.”

No, it won’t change the facts. Just the reality. If you deny it or hide it and pretend things were different, then those who come after will accept your subterfuge as the truth. Why do you think the Taliban blows up ancient statues of Buddha, and the far older winged gods of Sumeria?

Golly. I think I really want to get violent with these idiots. A bit of forced exposure, as it were.

try again Saturday

(USA) Wozniak downed by (Greece) Vougiouka in Women’s Individual Sabre Round 2. Will compete in Team event on Saturday.

Russia takes Gold and Silver in W.I., Ukraine Bronze.  Not entirely unexpected; eastern Europe wins this almost always.

Americans eliminated by Round 3.

I love the kind of competition where you have to commit 100% to it to win. No standing by watching, no holding back. Get in there and give it more than everything you’ve got, or don’t even bother to show up.

And that’s why I always loved the Sabre event. It turns sweet young women like this one

into explosive warriors like this one

Get a load of the blue hair. That takes some attitude, eh?

Good luck on Saturday, Dags. We’re all pulling for you.

hat day

Rhinoplasty? It almost looks like she’s wearing a tiny little nose ring in the corner of each nostril.

Sorry, not paying too much attention. Dizzy the cat had a big seizure today, her first one in 4 months. Entirely our fault, because we ( I ) have been a bit lax on her meds, “weaning” her down from a solid 2 pills per day to 1 1/2 to 1, and lately it’s only been 1/2. I have to get it back up to 1 1/2, and it has to be regimented, not random. So she pitched a fit behind the couch, shit in the corner, but only scratched me a little when I caught her and held her close until the episode passed. Then I made sure to get 2 halves of pill down her.  Ok, from now on: 9am, 5pm, 10pm, 1/2 a pill each time.

alternate name

We have the most adorable little cat. She’s the one with the permanent upper respiratory condition, always snuffing her nose and making glack noises in her throat, so we call her Sniffles. Not the cutest name, but an accurate one. I wanted to call her Amanda, a name I always thought was pretty. Or at least one I secretly associate with the little girl at the far end of the street I grew up on, who grew up to be strikingly curvy and good looking.

But I’ve come to realize that Amanda wouldn’t be right either. Ammonia would be better. OMG. OMFG. Time to change the litterbox.

sky crane in the morning

Ok, I admit it. I’m a plane spotter. And a ship spotter. And a bridge spotter. And I’d probably be a train spotter too if I had an active rail line nearby. I keep my eyes open. Besides, there aren’t always girls to watch. So what else can I do?

There’s a scene in the beginning of Stephen Spielberg’s cinematic masterpiece Empire of the Sun where the kid witnesses a squadron of P-51 Mustangs attack the village/internment camp he’s in. He gets so excited he’s jumping out of his skin, running up and down the rooftops screaming ”cadillac of the skies!!” as the planes - at eye level to him and only yards away - blast the daylights out of the nasty Japs and their buildings.

I can’t say that I got anywhere near as worked up as he did, but it was kind of a thrill to see and hear a gigantic Sikorsky S-64 “sky crane” helicopter chugging overhead at low altitude this morning. I’ve known about this beast for most of my life, but before this morning I’d never seen one. And now I have.

The thing is huge. It’s got to be 75 feet long if it’s an inch. Half the length of a jetliner, although the body is spindlier than a runway model’s calves. And the blades are just as enormous, covering nearly the full length of the body. They provide so much lift that they hardly even turn. Whup. Whup. Whup. You can easily see them going around and around. 150rpm at most I’d bet.

According the Wiki, the Army retired all of theirs years ago, so this one had to be either the civilian S-64 version, or a de-miled CH-54 model. With the early morning low sun behind it it was hard to tell the color, but I got a distinct impression of something dull and greenish yellow. Which is why I thought Olive Drab and therefore Army.

Actually, the two thoughts that predominated were “that’s the biggest damn dragonfly ever” and later on “thunderbirds are go” because a chopper like this would fit right in with that flight adventure puppet show from way back when.

So, neat-o for me. Other than that, it was another dishwater dull morning up at the shack.

screwed again

Damnation. Shit piss vinegar and damnation. Dammit dammit dammit, dammit!!

Remember how I have that garden out in the parking lot in front of our building here at the condo park? All the work I put into it, plants selected to bloom in sequence to keep the area in flower all summer long, only to have my “helpful” neighbors come and hack the entire thing back to the bare ground and call it “weeding”?

Yeah. $60 worth of alliums just about to bloom, buds swelling on the end of their 3 foot tall stalks. Dozens of them.  Gone. I felt violated.

Well, I tried to get over that. And five or seven weeks ago I laid down a whole bunch of marigold seeds, after buying a couple flats of Vinca and putting them in as a border. I spent very little but I had to do something, to show I was not beaten by their “accidental” actions.

Right. Well, I gave them time, and I wasn’t paying too much attention aside from a couple waterings during the hot dry spell, and once we had the rains some really amazing weeds started taking over. I’ve never seen plants grow so fast. Crazy. So I finally did the right thing (wanting to steal a march on my “helpful” neighbors just in case), and went out and fully weeded the whole thing the other day. I was very careful, but it was a huge job. I bet I took out 15 pounds of weeds. Crabgrass as thick as a McDonald’s soda straw. Some waxy oval flat leafed thing that sends out pinkish runners, and wherever a tendril touches down, it roots in and then sends out new shoots in 10 different directions. One run was 20 feet long. I tore that crap out by the bag, and found the queen plant that had stalks as big around as my finger. Rip!! Crivens!

And when all was done, I had a lovely strip of annuals across the front under mulch, a nice pink and white vinca bordered 4x8 area in the middle, and bare clean earth in the other planting area towards the back. But in the middle, I had marigolds coming up. Dozens of little plants maybe 2” tall. I took away all the competing weeds, and gave them a nice drink of Miracle Grow. In 48 hours they had grown 3”, I swear. And I could see where I had to do some fill in seeding.

So I went out there early this evening. And once again found bare earth. Every last marigold plant had been plucked out of the ground and thrown away. Gone. All of it gone. Even the one “flyer” that was growing through the mulch in the pathway. The vinca was untouched.

It makes me so sad. I guess I could put down more seeds and another layer of dirt and try again, and maybe get some plants up that could produce a single blossom by the start of September. This latest rape cost me a precious month.

And I know it was you Carol, you nasty old busy body. You killed my alliums the last time, telling Jenn that they were only wild onions and should be ripped out. Jealous old cow. And you’re out there today trying to tell me it’s too late to grow marigolds. Why, the season is almost over! But what you don’t know, miss stupid, is that those tenacious little flowers will grow and grow and grow, and bloom hard until the second frost. No, maybe they won’t reach their full peak size. But I could have pumped them full of Miracle Grow and they would have done just fine. Assuming you don’t come pluck them for the third time when no one is looking.

“No, you don’t want to grow them this late. They’ll never bloom.”

“Riight, except these seeds came from plants that grew in August last year. All of them from the seeds you gave me the year before that. Well, looks like some very selective deer came through here and ate ever last plant and didn’t touch anything else.”

“No, deer won’t touch marigolds.”

“Yes, I know that. I was being ironic.”

No, I don’t think I’m going to bother to replant a third time. And I think it would be wrong to deliver a Viking-like revenge on someone with a crowbar and a 3lb rock hammer for such a minor offense as messing up someone else’s garden without permission. But right now it’s very tempting to think that way. Fertilize the soil with some blood and bone marrow. Accidental my ass, you stupid bitter jealous old bloated potato sack full of dog shit.

Meanwhile in the UK

It’s A Crisis!!

BLM UK stages Day Of Rage or something. Blocks traffic and runways, creates headaches for commuters.
Lie-Ins, Die-Ins, protest marches, etc.

Very few actual black people involved.

“Right-o then, all you golliwogs, front and center! You too, Miss Tranny Thang”

Black Lives Matter UK campaigners blocked roads leading to London’s largest airport as part of a series of nationwide protests Friday.
Some transport routes in other British cities came to a standstill, with demonstrators chaining themselves together in Birmingham and Nottingham. More protests were planned in Manchester.

The UK-wide protests mark five years since 29-year-old black man Mark Duggan was shot and killed by police in north London. His death sparked riots across the capital and other British cities.
“In the UK, families have in some cases been waiting decades to find out what’s happened to their loved ones who have died in custody, or to get a straight answer—even where wrongdoing has been found to be by police officers,” Black Lives Matter UK spokesman Wail Qasim, 23, told CNN.
“So this demonstration comes after a decade-long struggle and it’s to highlight what’s happening.”

Starting around 8:20 a.m. (3:20 a.m. ET), several demonstrators began chaining themselves together and lying across the M4 motorway leading to Heathrow Airport beneath a banner reading: “This is a crisis.”
Ten people were arrested, said London’s Metropolitan Police.

Between 200 and 300 people gathered in Altab Ali Park in the London neighborhood of Whitechapel to hear calls for unbiased treatment for people of color.
Transit was not shut down. Police maintained a discreet presence in the park but several police vans were parked on nearby streets with reinforcements if necessary.
The park was named after a Bangladeshi man killed in a 1978 racially motivated killing.
