Molon Labe, Baby
Recent gun sales shatter all-time records. Firearms companies have hundreds of thousands of backorders. Ammunition sales skyrocket. Many dealers have nothing left to sell. Amazing.
Forget “Buy A Gun Day”. Never mind “National Ammo Day”. Americans are on a guns & ammo buying spree like nothing that has ever been seen before. It’s a pity that there isn’t a survey taken when you fill out that old yellow form at the gun shop. Just something that asks what political party you’re registered with, and if this is your first firearms purchase. Those results would be noteworthy. But the real subject of this post is to give “credit” to the greatest gun salesman of all time: B. Hussein Obama.
There are a couple of old and common numbers floating around about Americans and their guns: 65 million gun owners, 100 million guns. I think it’s time those numbers were revised. A lot!
The NICS story comes to me via MoonBattery and eventually leads back to AmmoLand. Go and read. They give the numbers some perspective: in the past 3 months alone, Americans have bought more firearms than would be needed to arm the entire Chinese and Indian armies. There’s a video there too, well worth watching. Though I disagree with the assumption that each gun purchase generated 1000 rounds of ammo sales, I can tell you that many, many ammo dealers and component dealers are out of stock on almost everything. My local powder monkey is no exception. This is fairly typical (click any of the primer links).
Yes, I know, not everyone who submits to a NICS check goes on to buy a gun. Some get rejected. But that some is only about 2%. And about 92% of those rejects are resolved instantly. Which pretty much means only law abiding folks are going through the NICS system. No kidding. Criminals aren’t totally stupid. Why pay money to have a background check run on you that shows you’re a felon, while you are in the process of buying a firearm, which is illegal for you to do? D’uh! But at the same time, not every NICS check is for a single firearms purchase. If you’re buying multiple guns at once, they only run one check on you. So the actual number of guns sold could be quite a lot higher than the NICS numbers. A LOT. Maybe 50%.
It’s been 10 1/2 years since the NICS system was put in place. In that time, as the cropped picture above shows ( original here ), nearly 100 million checks have been run. So it’s pretty likely that 100 million or more guns have been sold in that time period. Even if only half were new guns, that old “100 million guns in America” number is waaaay out of date, considering a decent quality firearm will last 100 years with a little care. And I’m doing my best to keep it that way. Are you?
