Late Night Glass of Water

It’s the middle of the night. Woke up, tried to find a cool spot on the pillow, got up to pee and to get a drink of water.

I heard today that our old older friend and former co-worker Carole had passed away last Thursday. Aww Carole. So sad. She’d been battling lower abdominal cancer for years. Terrible, horrible illness. Round after round of surgeries until I swear she was hollow. Then chemo. For years. And before that a quadruple bypass. Through it all she kept her spirits up, or at least only communicated with us when she was in an up mood. She was the best. A mid-west farm girl who took no prisoners nor put up with any BS. Sharp as a tack. We had the best times at AT&T, from the buzzword bingo meetings to the fire eating lunches at the Indian and Thai restaurants. And all the shared stories of her kids, grand kids, her ex-husband, her current husband, Iowa farm life. Tales of adventure and travel. Horses. Hunting deer and rabbits with a .45. That inflammable pickup truck of hers. Her gardens. Hummingbirds. Trying to grow mushrooms in the basement. All the years she spent in community chorus. She loved that so much. Man, she packed in a full life. My God, what a great team the 6 of us were. Days gone by. We’ll always love you honey.

Clean sweep tonight at Greed League. A miracle. We took on the 3rd place team and simply out bowled them. Took all 7 points. I’d better check the tide charts and the phases of the moon; we don’t get this kind of syzygy too often. Firing on all cylinders, all of us. I threw a 629, which is about a 100 over series for me in this league. It should have been better, but I hit a really rough spot in the 3rd game - 4 opens in a row, ewww - and was “doomed” with a 149 on an open in the 8th. And we were 15 points down then too. So I asked my guys if they were hearing an aria from the obese woman. What?? Is the fat lady singing? Um, no? Good, then let’s get up and win this one. We’ve got 2 frames. Go. Bowl. Win!  And I actually put my money where my mouth is, and struck in the 9th and then X’d out in the 10th, pulling in 60 pins in 2 frames for a 209. And the other guys rallied too. We won that game by I think 16 pins. But 1 is enough to win, right? So a good night. And B, our globe trotting traveling salesman teammate, missed both earthquakes while in Chile last week, flew out via Panama, missed the earthquake there, landed in Ft. Worth and drove to St. Louis and missed the earthquakes in Oklahoma*. Pretty neat. He’s another guy who leads a full life, him and all his 400hp Audis, and can spin a great story out of daily events. So he’s back in Texas next week, so it will be just the 3 of us in Greed League, unless we can find a sub.

Hoping the weather will be nice enough to let me do an oil change tomorrow. I got a jug of synthetic and a nice Purolator filter at Walmart, both for under $22 total. Sweet deal. And I learned an odd thing ... synthetic motor oil is made from natural gas! How, what?? News to me. So is this new dexos oil standard conthing, and the new crop of ZERO weight oils for European cars?? 0W-20 oil?? Holy cats, what, do they have manufacturing tolerances down to the hundred thousandths now? 0.00005”? That’s barely a micron!

* naturally the ninnies are all aflutter in OK, claiming the earthquakes are caused by fracking. Gosh, if only it was that easy to cause earthquakes. We’d have split California off into the ocean by now. Funny how these green-panic types never look at history, or at a Geology textbook. Or a map. Duh.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:

1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
