Jimmy, Will You Please Just Shut Up

Let me preface this story with some personal history.

I’ve spent a good deal of time in Nepal working with the local Christian church there.  I have friends who have been missionaries in the country for over 15 years.  A dear friend, who is now in the states, is a former Maoist rebel.  I communicate with native Nepalese friends regularly.  Last time I was there, it was not uncommon at all to be “detained” by maoists and asked for a “donation” to the cause, especially when we were out in the villages.

Former president calls on US to talk with Nepal Maoists

KATHMANDU (AFP) - Former US President Jimmy Carter called on his country’s government Saturday to establish relations with Nepal’s former rebel Maoists, who remain on a list of US terrorist organisations.

“My opinion is that the US should establish some communication with the Maoists. The people of Nepal have accepted them as political players,” Carter told journalists at the end of a four-day visit to Nepal.

Yes, Jimmy, you bumbling excuse of a former president, and your opinion is soooooooo valued.  I’ll tell you why they are accepted as politicle players; one of two reasons:
1. They went into remote villages 10 years ago and started “helping” with schools, food, roads and other basic necessities. This helped them establish a rapport with the locals when the national givernment could not.  After they “won the hearts” of the villagers, they began to take their boys and “train” them, typically taking them to an even more remote place and teaching them terrorist and guerilla warfare tactics.  Mind you, these are boys around 10 years old.  They now have a generation of lads who know nothing else.

2. At the point of a gun.  When the royal family was assasinated in 2001, the government pretty much became ineffective.  The Maoists saw their chance and expanded operations into the more populated areas.  They call for a general strike in a town and forbid anyone from travelling or carrying on trade for a period of three days normally.  If anyone is caught doing something they shouldn’t be (according to the Maoists), they are “arrested” and taken away...most of the time never to be seen again.  For most of these poor people, that is a strong motivator to keep quiet and just do what they say for fear of getting “dissapeared”.  Because the local police are either corrupt or afraid, they soon have no control over a town with a Maoist stronghold.

Now, 10-15 years later, of course the Maoists are “political players”, they’ve muscled their way to a place at the table.

Earlier this week the US ambassador to Nepal James Moriarty said that the ultra-leftists’ “addiction to violence, extortion and intimidation continues unabated.”

Of course they are.  They have outgunned the government.

During his visit, Carter met with Prachanda, the Maoist leader whose nom-de-guerre means “the fierce one.”

The 82-year-old former president admitted he was worried about the activities of the Young Communist League (YCL), the Maoist youth wing that has frequently been accused of using mafia-like tactics.

“I am still concerned about some of the activities of the YCL. My hope is that they will be corrected,” Carter told reporters at a hotel in the capital.

As my dad used to say: “Wish in one hand and crap in the other...see which on weighs more”

“I have expressed my concern to him (Prachanda) and he has assured me he will do whatever possible to correct the problem,” Carter said.

And Jimmy, being the southern genelman he is, believed him unquestioningly.

The US embassy in Kathmandu have been at pains to emphasise that Carter is visiting as a private US citizen.

For good reason.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
