it must be something in their water.  has ta be

Now this gets pretty darn silly.

What are they thinking?  How many kids do they think might actually drown? And if it takes as long as the article says it does to come to the rescue, then what’s the point of that tube?

As long as I’m talking about silly or dumb things.

In an effort to discourage youngsters from taking up the smoking habit, as well as (they think) turning some adults off the evil weed, come 2015 all cigarette packs will be blank only. No color, no logo and no artwork.
It has been stated that adults seeing cigs packed that way, will think they are getting poor quality tobacco, and so will not buy any.  Is that dumb or what?

Some loony tune idiot recently said that passive tobacco smoke was still dangerous to non smokers from 30 feet away.  Something like that.  I saw it in our paper but made no notes. I should have. Then I heard it on the radio too.

The govt. passes anti tobacco legislation but is happy to spend the extra money they keep piling on to the product, on raises and perks.

Hey, smoking is NOT good for you.  I’ve been through it, I’ve had surgery, I kicked the habit long ago.  But I am not like a reformed prostitute who finds religion.
I wish I had never started but the age I grew up in was not this well informed.  I guess what I hate is the nanny state like thinking and anyway .... more ppl have (I think) had their lives ruined and ruined other lives, by drinking to excess or driving and drinking and ending up killing some innocent.  Don’t see many warning in bold print on liquor bottles.
What next?  Sugar and salt in foods?  Oh wait. They’ve already started that and some manufacturers have already caved in. Never mind that folks like to taste what they’re ingesting.  Sheesh. Take out the xtra salt or sugar and what’s left? Bah.

On the other hand.

Yeah. I do understand the medical authorities claiming that if ppl self harm, because they have National Health, what people do to themselves is often paid for by the many others.

Crivens .... didn’t mean to go off on a rant like that.  So here.

Take a look at this.

3in of water? That calls for a lifebelt, say elf ’n’ safety

THE brook is so small it doesn’t even have a name. It is three inches deep, sometimes swelling to six after heavy rain, and not much longer across.

Ring of ire: Thames Water’s lifebelt next to the tiny brook (arrowed) in Fetcham, Surrey

So where better for the country’s largest water company to install a lifebelt?

Thames Water officials were branded drips by residents yesterday for providing the life- saving equipment following a ‘health and safety review’ at the ditch in Cock Lane in Fetcham, Surrey.

Resident Jonathan Brown said: ‘The stream is like a puddle – like someone left the tap on. There is no rhyme nor reason behind this ring.

‘I understand we have to be safe but even if someone fell over in the water, throwing a life ring at them wouldn’t do any good. It would just hit them on the head.’ Fellow resident David Rann said it was ‘health and safety gone mad’, adding: ‘I am 5ft nothing and it hardly passes my toes. It is also 2ft wide at the worst of times, so that makes it more ridiculous.

‘There is no logical reason for it whatsoever.

‘If, for argument’s sake, my grandchild did fall in, I could quite easily walk over to him and pick him up, no bother.’
Mr Rann added: ‘ What makes it worse is that it took a couple of us no less than five or six minutes to actually get the lifebelt out of its holder. A child or lady might be stood there for ever.’

Thames Water spokesman Sarah Sharpe said: ‘ The stream is something we call a bouncing pond. It takes the run- off from the road surface during serious weather conditions so we don’t usually see them very full with water. The reason for this decision is because we had a recent internal health and safety review and we believe this area was in need of better safety precautions.’ Miss Sharpe added: ‘There is obviously a recreation ground at the back of the stream and the worry is that children may be at risk during severe weather.’

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
