In the middle of the night

Guess I’m not sleeping so well lately. Oh sure, after a certain point in your life, getting up halfway through the night to use the potty becomes routine. Even getting up twice a night for that sometimes. No, lately I wake up, wide awake. Sometimes it takes me awhile to get back to sleep, and that’s really odd. Usually I can just close my eyes and I’m off to dreamland.

But sometimes late at night I make the mistake of coming downstairs to get something to drink, and oh hey, I’ll just go online for a minute. Because the middle of the night is when you really find out the unusual corners of the internet.

Did you know that conch is a nearly perfect source of optimum protein? All the benefits of saltwater fish, high levels of Omega- whatevers, compact mass, low harvesting cost, and so on. Plus it tastes great. And they live on algae. Problem is, they’ve been seriously over-fished, and not much has been done about it. In the middle of the night I find that there is just one fish farm operation for conch in all the world, down in the Turks and Caicos. Good for them. Ought to export the technology and make farm growing a thing on all the islands and shallow shores in and around the Caribbean and the Gulf. All that used to be wall to wall conchs, but there are 90% fewer of the big sea snails now than there were back in the 80s and 90s. Several countries have already outlawed conch fishing, including the USA. The Florida Keys used to be rife with them, but no more.

Free associative thinking gets you into those odd corners. I started out with a link to a really cool giant R/C airplane Doc sent in, and wound up looking into cabin pressure standards for various jet models and airlines. I did not know that the cabin pressure on a Boeing 737-7000/800/900 is set to around 8000-8400 feet when you fly. While that pressure level doesn’t cause immediate hypoxia in most people, it does give you only 75% of the oxygen you’d get at sea level. If you have COPD or any lung trouble, it can be pretty exhausting and hard to breath. No air in the air! The new Airbus A380 runs at a “cabin altitude” of only 5000 feet, plus has special humidification systems built in to fight the really dry air you get in jets. This gives you 98% of the oxygen you’d get at sea level, plus the higher inside pressure makes the flight seem quieter. Overall, it’s a much less tiring experience. The new 787 from Boeing is quite similar, running a cabin altitude of about 6000 feet. It really does make a huge difference in comfort.  Here’s a neat cabin altitude oxygen calculator.  I think higher cabin pressures and MUCH higher humidity, plus less recycled air, will make flying a lot healthier and more comfortable. Plus your ears won’t pop half as much.

Yup, odd stuff late at night. Although I think the above is an excellent idea!!

Bit of an early winter miracle at Greed League tonight; we actually managed a 3-4 split. This bunch has been Team Loser so bad this season. Ouch. But tonight it seemed we finally had our ducks in a row. Ok, fine, we lost the first game by 120. But then we got it together and took the second game by 180. I rolled a 223 and was actually low bowler for our side! Unreal. Our opponents, experts at points management (sandbaggers), had to bring out their A Game to win the third one, which they did by only 6 pins. We bowled them hard, running the scores up and over 1200 pins for the 5 man squads. I stayed relaxed and didn’t force the ball, and only moved to a more outside line halfway through, so I threw a 228 for that, which gave me a 645 series for the night. I’m more than happy with that. I didn’t have any big string of strikes for the 228 game like I did for the 223 game, but I closed all my frames, and that makes all the difference.

Ok, that’s enough. Back to bed. Well, nearly enough ...

all better now. Hey, wait a second ...

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
