In Memoriam

Imagine, if you can, 13,000+ law enforcement personnel - a parade of peace officers four across and stretching over 1.5 kilometers or about a mile in length. Dominated by huge numbers of many in scarlet tunics and Stetson hats.

This was the Memorial Service parade on Thursday March 10th, 2005 in Edmonton Alberta, for four members of Canada’s national police force. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police constables were ambushed and murdered by one James Roszko near Meyerthorpe Alberta on the morning of March 3rd, 2005 while guarding a farm building where a warrant had been served for stolen property and the subsequent discovery of evidence of a marijuana grow-op.

The RCMP to many people is an image of the ‘Mounties’ in a scarlet tunic and Stetson hats on horseback. Nothing could be further from the truth today. They are the FBI, CIA, State Troupers, Highway patrol and general Law Enforcement Officers all rolled into one. I would suggest visiting their site.

Not since 1885 have so many RCMP constables been killed in one incident. It was a fitting tribute that so many police officers and officials traveled from all over the world to attend this memorial service. Many traveled thousands of miles at their own expense to attend.

Those who fell were:

Reg. 48064, Cst. Peter Christopher SCHIEMANN, 25, was born at Petrolia, Ontario, and joined the Force at Stony Plain, Alberta. Upon completion of training at Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, on November 27, 2000, Cst. Schiemann was posted to K Division, Alberta, namely at Mayerthorpe Detachment, where he worked in General Policing and Highway Patrol.

Reg. 48568, Cst. Lionide Nicholas JOHNSTON, 32, joined the Force at Lac La Biche, Alberta, where he was born, and graduated from Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, on April 17, 2001. Cst. Johnston was posted to K Division, Alberta, namely at Mayerthorpe Detachment, where he worked in First Nations Policing and General Policing.

Reg. 49673, Cst. Anthony Fitzgerald Orion GORDON, 28, was born at Edmonton, Alberta, and joined the Force at Red Deer, Alberta. Upon completion of training at Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, on October 15, 2002, Cst. Gordon was posted to K Division, Alberta, namely at Whitecourt Town Detachment, where he worked in General Policing and Highway Patrol.

Reg. 51874, Cst. Brock Warren MYROL, 29, was born at Outlook, Saskatchewan, and joined the Force at Red Deer, Alberta. Upon completion of training at Depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, on February 7, 2005, Cst. Myrol was posted to K Division, Alberta, namely at Mayerthorpe Detachment, where he worked in General Policing.

I had spent last Wednesday afternoon prior to the memorial service with a friend who had recently retired from the RCMP. He had been physically ill when he heard of the shootings. He talked, and I listened, as he told me of this last one above who had just graduated from the training depot and had not even received his first paycheck. Another one left behind a
wife, a small child and another on the way who won’t know its father.

But another important reason for writing this is to thank the many hundreds of Peace Officers who attended from all over the U.S. You know who you are. Your presence did not go un-noticed. As we were with you after 9/11/01, so too, were you very much with us at this time. Again, THANK YOU.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
