I’m not laughing

Every time I think we’ve bottomed-out on stupidity, somebody starts digging deeper. In this case:

A comedy club in Barcelona is experimenting with charging users per laugh, using facial-recognition technology to track how much they enjoyed the show.

I’d love to see what the definition of ‘a laugh’ is. Can you define ‘a laugh’? When does ‘a laugh’ start? When does ‘a laugh’ end? Can you tell the difference between ‘a laugh’ and any other facial/vocal expression? I can see it now: “I wasn’t laughing, I was hiccuping.” Was it just one ‘laugh’? or three? If I laugh too much I tend to start coughing. Does my coughing count?

The project was developed to combat falling audience numbers.

I see. Must need to drive away more audience. The audience is the enemy.

Can’t wait for governments to decide to tax laughs. Imagine your tax forms! What kind of laugh records will you have to keep? Will the tax be lower if you laugh at a book? Movie? Yourself? Your friends? Will you laugh when you are audited by the Laughing Revenue Service? Speaking of records—how do you prove your laughter? Let me see… gov’t records the average laughter engendered by a movie. I check that movie out. I find it not funny. Yet the gov’t taxes me for the average laughter.

Would the poor guard, trying to keep a straight face, count as laughter?

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
